The emissions accounting, reporting and offsetting is based on the “Greenhouse Gas Product Lifecycle Accounting and Reporting” standard from the internationally recognized Greenhouse Gas Protocol. For our climate neutral GOGREEN services we consider the total greenhouse gas emissions (including but not limited to CO2) from our own and subcontracted logistics business, as well as emissions from the production of fuel and energy. Emissions calculation and offset are verified annually bythe independent audit company SGS (Verification Statement online).

With our own climate protection project in Lesotho, fully financed by Deutsche Post DHL, carbon credits are generated by providing efficient cooking stoves to the local people. Thus firewood use is reduced by up to 80 % compared to traditional stoves. People enjoy using clean and efficient stoves, benefit from reduced air pollution, less deforestation and soil erosion.

With the International Small Group Tree Planting Program (TIST), local farmers participate in afforestation in Uganda. Currently around 3,000 small farmers are involved with 1,600 project areas. Their individual tree planting activities are combined with trainings and annual payments for the planted trees. The project areas are regularly checked.

People living in villages with a lack of safe water supply have to boil water to eliminate pathogens. This results in carbon emissions, local pollution and deforestation. The Hydraid® BioSand water filter is a safe and practical alternative to boiling water. It not only avoids carbon emissions and indoor pollution but also significantly reduces waterborne diseases.

Degraded pastureland in Panama is reforested with a mixture of mostly native tree species. The project combines sustainable forest management with the protection of biodiversity. The project creates long-term fair employment opportunities for the localpopulation with supplementary trainings.

The project reduces carbon emissions by using wind energy, replacing fossil fuels, a major energy source in Nicaragua. In creating local jobs for the construction, operation and maintenance of the wind farm, the project also has a positive impact on the economic and social well-being of the region. The local community participated actively in the project design.

700,000 ceramic water purifiers for households provide clean drinking water and avoid the common practice of boiling water. In addition to the carbon reductions, the project helps to improve people’s health (e.g. diarrhea reduction), reduce firewood need and avoid risks related to boiling water. It will also help create jobs in production, distribution and sales of the water filters.

The biogas-program in the Sichuan province in China reduces carbon emissions by enabling low-income families to switch from coal to household biogas digesters. Animal manure and organic waste is used for the biogas digesters. This helps not only to reduce carbon emissions from traditional cooking with coal but also to reduce methane emissions and improve people’s health.

In rural India, diesel powered pumps are commonly used to irrigate small-holdings. The pumps not only generate carbon emissions, they are also expensive and thus hired for short periods, meaning that the fields are often flooded, wasting water and washing top soil away. Treadle pumps, a human-powered device, offer a low-cost and clean alternative method of irrigation.

The Mamak waste disposal plant, located in the metropolitan region of Ankara, each day processes an average of 3,500 tonnes of municipal waste. A landfill gas plant has been installed to collect gas from organic waste processing (mainly CO2 and methane) to generate electricity. The local community benefits from the technology transfer, newly created jobs and improved air quality.
