Unit 1, Session 2
LEADER BIBLE STUDY In the last session, we stated that modern astronomy verifies the universe was
created. Even more astounding is that science has discovered how the universe is fine-
tuned for the existence of human life. Consider this: If the earth was not 93 million
miles from the sun, was not tilted on its axis at precisely 23.4 degrees, did not rotate
exactly once every 24 hours, or did not revolve around the sun every 365.25 days, we
could not exist on this planet!
We can trace God’s process to prepare the world for the pinnacle of His creation:
the human race! Beginning in Genesis 2:4, we see how God made man and woman.
God formed man (Hebrew: Adam) and breathed into him the “breath of life”
(v. 7). God placed the man, later named Adam, in a beautiful garden where nourishing
plants grew. In the garden were two special trees: the tree of life and the tree of
the knowledge of good and evil. God forbade Adam to eat from the tree of the
knowledge of good and evil.
As time passed, God allowed Adam to name all the animals. Nonetheless, none
was really adequate as his companion. Therefore, God put Adam to sleep and formed
a woman from his rib. God brought them together and blessed the marriage of the
man and woman (v. 24).
What is the special significance of God’s breathing life into Adam so that Adam
became a “living being?” (v. 7)
Why did God forbid Adam to eat fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good
and evil?
Why is God’s definition of marriage so significant (v. 24)? (see Jesus’ affirmation:
Matt. 19:4-6; Mark 10:6-9)

are not like them.
• Discuss ways kids can show love to all people, because all people are made in God’s
image.
• Direct kids to pass the mirror around the circle while music plays.
• Play “Your Amazing World, Instrumental” (track 2). When you stop the music, the
person holding the mirror will answer a Review Question from page 94.

every person is equally valued by God.
LEARN THE UNIT VERSE►“Genesis 1:1 Unit Verse” (Pack Item 2)
• Draw attention to the Unit Verse poster and guide kids to recite the verse.
• Form pairs of kids. Place 3 in a group if there is an odd number.
• One kid will say the first word of the verse, the other kid will say the second word.
The pair will go back and forth, each saying one word until the verse is complete.
• Pairs will then say the verse together.
MISSIONS EMPHASIS • Read the missions story or show the video “Learning the Stories” (DVD).
• Lead kids to make comparisons about your church and the church they saw in the
video. Remind kids that children in West Africa are learning the same Bible stories
they are!
• Comment that Kimberly Cain hopes that as the children learn, they will grow up
and choose to follow Christ. Kimberly believes that God has special plans for these
children. Let kids know that you have the same hope for them!

GOD’S PLAN FOR PEOPLEGENESIS 2:4-24
BIBLE VERSE: Genesis 1:27
LIFE POINT: God made people in His own image.
When God created everything, He formed the first man out of the dust on the ground and breathed life into his nostrils.God planted a garden in Eden and placed the man in the garden. God caused wonderful things to grow in the garden, including two very special trees. Four rivers went out to water the plants in the garden.God told the man to work in the garden and watch over it. He told the man that he could eat from any tree in the garden except the special one.God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make him a helper as his complement.” So God brought wild animals, livestock, and birds to the man. The man gave each creature a name. But none of the creatures was the right helper and complement for the man.God caused a deep sleep to come over the man. God took one of his ribs and used it to form a woman. God brought the man to the woman. The man said, “This one, at last, is made like me. She is bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh. She will be called ‘woman’ because she was taken from man.”
The man and woman lived in the garden together and felt no shame.
