Colossians 3:16

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom;teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and

spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.”

I pledge allegiance to the Lord Jesus Christ, Whose name I love and Whose praise I sing. As a faithful sailor in Patch the Pirate Club,

I will do my best to serve my Savior and obey His Word.

Greetings from the JOLLY ROGER!

We’re on the final wave of the JOURNEY! I am rejoicing in all that you have accomplished, and we have yet to discover more great treasure in God’s Word.

One of the most important lessons you will learn in this last segment of our journey—is that you do not need to fear the future when you place your trust in God. God loves you, and He will take care of you.

God will show you how important obedience is to Him. Jeremiah 7:23 teaches us—“But this thing commanded I them, saying, Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and ye shall be my people: and walk ye in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well unto you.

What a great God we serve! May God bless you richly as you continue in your study of His Word!

Rejoicing in the Lord,

Ron Patch HamiltonPhilippians 4:4

The sailors in Patch the Pirate Club meet every month for four consecutive weeks. At the end of the month they perform the song they have learned. A sailor must attend each of the weekly meetings and the performance and must complete the entire month of My Quiet Time Devotions to earn the award pin given at the end of each month.

If your child misses one meeting during the month, he may make up the absence by quoting the make-up memory verse to a club worker. If he misses more than one meeting and wishes to make up absences, the captain may (if he or she determines an absence to be legitimate) assign the child a make-up memory verse. The only way to make up incomplete My Quiet Time Devotions is to complete them and have them checked by the club captain or co-captain.

If a child is faithful in attendance and in completing his devotions for an entire year (and has thus earned all nine of his award pins), he is eligible to receive a Faithful Servant Award at the end of the club year. A very special Super Sailor of the Year Award is given to one boy and one girl who have exhibited a consistent testimony and faithfulness throughout the club year. The club captain will keep attendance records for your child. See the captain if you have questions concerning your child’s award eligibility.

Note: The award pins are to be attached to the sailor hat in neat rows on either side of the logo badge. See the previous page for a complete illustration of the uniform and awards.

It is important for Christians to be faithful in having a daily quiet time with God. This year we are going to help you develop this habit. A quiet time is a time when you listen to God and let Him talk to you through His Word, the Bible. It is a time when you praise God, tell Him you love Him, and thank Him for things He has done for you. You also pray about things you or someone else needs.

If you can read the Bible, you can have your quiet time all by yourself. This is the best way to grow up in your Christian life. If you cannot read the Bible yet, ask your father, your mother, or some older person to share your quiet time with you every day. Pick a time and place where you won’t be distracted. It should be a place where you can see well and where you can comfortably write.

Here is a plan for you to follow for your quiet time. You will need a Bible, a pencil or pen, and your Sailor’s Log.

1. Look up the verse in your Bible.2. Fill in the blanks in My Quiet Time daily devotional guide.3. Read the explanation of the verse.4. Think about what the verse means.5. Ask God to help you apply the lesson to your own life, and use the prayer

time suggestion as a guide when you pray.

I will have my quiet time with God _________________________.

My quiet time place will be ______________________________.

Song of the Month: “How Can I Fear?”

Patch Fun Song: “A Respectable Pirate”

Children’s Hymn of the Year: “All Hail the Power”

Memory Verse: Psalm 4:8—“I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety.”

Make-up Memory: Isaiah 26:3—“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.”

Sailor Scripture Memory: Each week, read and review the passage below in order to quote the entire passage in any performance during the year. Quote along with Patch the Pirate on the Learn at Home CD.

Hebrews 11:1-16—“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good report. Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh. By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God. But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith. By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went. By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God. Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised. Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable. These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country. And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned. But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.”

SPEAKING PARTS FOR THE PERFORMANCE

Use several small groups of sailors to recite from Psalm 23.

Group 1 (Recite together clearly and with energy.) “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

Group 2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

Group 3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

Group 1 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

Group 2 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

Group 3 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life:

Groups 1-3 (Speaking together.) And I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.”

Choir (Recites.) Psalm 4:8—“I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety.”

Choir (Sings.) “How Can I Fear?”

MONTH ONE • WEEK 1PATCH THE PIRATE’S SONG

Directions: Patch the Pirate searches his trusty Sword, the Bible, to discover wonderful treasures about music. Sing along with Patch a new song of praise to God for His special love and care.

Zephaniah 3:17—“The Lord thy God in the midst of thee is ___________________; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with ________________; he will rest in his love, he will _________________ over thee with singing.”

In Patch the Pirate’s search, we find that the Bible does not give a time or point when music began. Music may have been in existence as long as God—with no beginning and no end. We learn that all three Persons of the Trinity of God have been involved in singing. The Trinity is made up of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

In Zephaniah 3:17, God the Father sings and rejoices over His own children with singing.

THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERDHow much do you know about sheep? David knew a lot about sheep.

His job as a young man was to take care of his father’s sheep. As David went through his life, he learned that people were much like the sheep he used to tend. He also learned that God was a loving Shepherd Who took care of His children. This week as you have your devotions, you’ll learn from Psalm 23 that God, your Shepherd, is taking care of you.

Psalm 23:1—“The ____________ is my __________________; I shall not

_____________.”

When David was a boy, he took care of his father’s sheep. This was a big job. David stayed with the sheep all day. He found the best places for his sheep to eat grass. He made sure the sheep had enough water to drink.

If a sheep got hurt, David took care of its wounds. If a sheep wandered away, David went after it—searching until he found it. Sometimes, wild animals would come and try to attack the sheep. David used his sling to fight off the wild animals so the sheep would be safe. David was a good shepherd and took care of every need that the sheep had.

If you’re God’s child, you’re like a sheep in God’s flock. God is like yourloving Shepherd. That is what today’s verse says. As a sheep in God’s flock, you never have to worry that God will not take care of you. Just as David took care of every need his sheep had, God promises to take care of you. It’s your job to trust God, obey Him, and stay close to Him.

Thank God that He is your loving Shepherd. Thank Him that He takes care of you every minute of every day.

Psalm 23:2a—“He ___________________ me to ___________ down in

green ______________________.”

Sheep aren’t very smart animals. They have simple minds and can’t figure things out by themselves. That’s why they need a shepherd to take care of them. The most healthy sheep are those who eat a full meal and then lie down to rest and digest their food. But sheep will not lie down if they are hungry or if they do not feel safe. A good shepherd will lead his sheep to nice, green pastures where there’s plenty to eat. He’ll also make sure no wild animals are around to frighten the sheep. Then the sheep will eat well and lie down to rest.

Christians are a lot like sheep. We’ll not rest or be content when we’re spiritually hungry or when we’re afraid. But God, our Shepherd, is able to feed our souls with His Word, if we’ll only read it. Just as the sheep feel safe when they can see the shepherd nearby, God’s children feel safe when they know that God is near them as well.

God’s always with you. He has promised in His Word never to leave you by yourself. He’s always watching over you just as a good shepherd watches over his sheep. But if you don’t read God’s Word and pray every day, you may feel that God isn’t with you. Spending time with God will help you be content and not afraid.

Thank your Heavenly Father for caring for you as a shepherd takes care of his sheep. Ask Him to help you read your Bible and pray daily so that you’ll be content and not afraid.

Psalm 23:2b—“He leadeth ________ beside the ________________ waters.”

Good shepherds go to great trouble to make sure their sheep have fresh, clean water to drink. If the sheep drink out of muddy puddles, they can swallow tiny bugs that will make them very sick. Sheep don’t care

what kind of water they drink. The shepherd must watch them carefully to keep them away from dangerous water and to guide them to good water.

Many times a shepherd digs out an area next to a river or stream to makea calm pool of water for the sheep to drink from. Digging is very hard workfor the shepherd. Then he leads his sheep down to the water and watchescarefully that no wild animal comes near as the sheep drink.

Many times God’s children may feel that they’re on their own, without God’s help. You may feel that your life is just going along by itself, without God’s control. But this feeling is far from the truth. Just as the shepherd is always working to take care of his sheep, God is always working in your life, controlling what happens to you. He makes sure that you always have what He knows you need to be a healthy Christian.

Thank God that He is always at work in your life. Thank Him for giving you everything you need to serve Him.

Psalm 23:3—“He restoreth my ___________: he leadeth ________ in the

__________________ of righteousness for __________ name’s sake.”

When a shepherd takes his sheep to the best pastures to graze, the path to those mountain fields may be dangerous and rocky. Sometimes the shepherd will go in front of the sheep, leading them and calling them to follow him. The sheep trust the shepherd, knowing that if they follow in the path he leads them, they’ll come to no harm.

David went through many difficult times in his life. There were dark times when his life was in danger and even his closest friends seemed to have left him. During these times, David turned to his Shepherd, the Lord, for help and comfort.

Thank God for guiding you through the hard times in your life like a loving shepherd. Ask Him to help you trust Him and follow Him in the paths of righteousness.

Psalm 23:4—“Yea, though I walk through the _________________ of the

shadow of death, I will fear no ______________: for thou art with me; thy

rod and thy staff they _______________________ me.”

In spring, the shepherds take their sheep up to the high mountain pastures to feed until the fall. The shepherd knows that the best way for the sheep to reach these pastures is to go through the valleys. But these valleys are filled with dark shadows and unknown dangers. To the sheep, it can be a frightening journey. They aren’t able to understand why the shepherd leads them into such a place.

But the shepherd knows what is best, and they follow him. He calls out to them to tell them he’s with them. He uses his staff to touch their sides, gently keeping them on the safe path and comforting them with his touch. The sheep come safely out of that dark valley and soon are enjoying the wonderful pastures high in the mountains.

In today’s verse, David says that death is like that dark valley. He comforts himself and all who read this verse with the fact that God is with them even in death. There is no reason to fear when our Heavenly Father is nearby comforting us with His words and His loving touch. How wonderful it is that God has promised never to leave His children, even when they face “the valley of the shadow of death”!

Thank God that He’s always with you, even when you pass through fearful valleys in your life.

Psalm 23:5—“Thou preparest a _________________ before me in the

presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with __________; my

___________ runneth over.”

“Don’t eat that plant, little lamb!” the shepherd said, pulling the fluffy lamb away from the leaves she was sniffing. “That’s poisonous!” Go eat the good, juicy grass over by your mother.” The lamb ran off to play as the shepherd pulled up the dangerous plant. It was the shepherd’s job to keep the sheep from eating things that would make them sick.

Off in the trees around the pasture, a wolf watched the sheep with hungry eyes. Would he be able to snatch a lamb from the flock while the shepherd wasn’t looking? The wolf waited and watched. But because the shepherd was watching over his sheep so carefully, the wolf never got his chance. He finally wandered away to look for food somewhere else.

Your Heavenly Father is like that shepherd. He makes sure you have exactly what you need every day. He keeps you from dangers that you don’t even know are there. And He protects you from our enemy, Satan.

Thank God for providing for all of your needs. Thank Him for protecting you from dangers and from Satan’s attacks.

Psalm 23:6—“Surely __________________ and mercy shall follow me all

the __________ of my life: and I will dwell in the ______________ of the

Lord for ___________.”

A sheep who has a good shepherd will be taken care of and loved all of his life. When he wanders away, the shepherd will find him. When he is injured, the shepherd will take care of his wounds and nurse him back to health. When a wild animal comes after him, the shepherd will kill the wild animal and rescue the sheep. The sheep will love the shepherd and will want to be near him always.

WAYS GOD TAKES CARE OF MELast week you learned that God takes care of you the way a loving

shepherd cares for his sheep. The Bible tells us many ways that God takes care of His children. If you’re a Christian, God is with you all the time, taking special care of you. This week as you have your devotions, you’ll learn about some of the ways God is taking care of you.

Psalm 34:4—“I sought the Lord, and he ______________ me, and

____________________ me from all my ______________.”

Have you ever been afraid? That’s a silly question, isn’t it? Everyone gets scared sometimes. Does God care when you’re afraid? The answer to that question is very important. Yes, God does care about you when you’re afraid.

Today’s verse talks about being afraid. David said that when he was afraid, he called out to his Heavenly Father. Today’s verse says that God heard David when he called out in fear. God not only heard David’s prayer, but God rescued David from all of his fears.

God takes care of you today in the same way He took care of David in

Bible times. When you’re afraid and you call out to God, He’ll hear your cry. As you tell God about your fears, God will help you realize that He is in charge of everything that happens to you. He will help you remember that you have the Holy Spirit living inside you, helping you and comforting you. Then you’ll be rescued from your fears just as David was. God takes care of His children in this wonderful way.

Thank God that He takes care of you by hearing your prayers and helping you when you’re afraid. Ask Him to help you trust in Him whenever you’re afraid—instead of worrying and being upset.

James 1:17—“Every good _____________ and every perfect gift is from

_____________, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom

is no variableness, neither ________________ of turning.”

Janice pressed her forehead against the window and watched eagerly for her dad’s car to drive into the driveway. She couldn’t wait for her dad to get home! Why? Because today was her birthday, and she knew that her dad was bringing her some special gifts.

Giving gifts is a way people show their love for one another. Today’s verse says that God gives gifts to His children—gifts that are good and perfect. This is another way He takes care of you. God has given you many gifts. On the lines below, list some of the gifts God has given you.

Philippians 4:19—“But my God shall _____________ all your __________

according to his _____________ in glory by Christ Jesus.”

In the Bible, God promises His children over and over that He’ll give them everything they need to serve Him. Today’s verse is one of the places we find this promise. God says that He’ll take care of you by meeting all of your needs.

The second part of this verse says that God supplies your needs “according to His riches in glory.” God’s riches never run out. He’s not limited by money or time as we are. Nothing can keep Him from giving you what you need.

Sometimes what you need is not what you want. Just as a wise parent doesn’t give his child candy and ice cream all the time, God will not give you things that will be bad for you. There will be times in life when you think you need or want something, but God knows that thing will cause you to sin or not really help you. God knows you because He made you. He doesn’t want to give you things that aren’t good for you. Withholding bad things (or good things that won’t help you) is another way that He lovingly takes care of His children.

Thank God for the wonderful promise in today’s verse. Thank Him that

His riches never run out. Thank Him also for not giving you the things that might cause you to turn from Him.

Jeremiah 29:11—“For I know the ________________ that I think toward

you, saith the Lord, thoughts of _____________, and not of __________,

to give you an expected end.”

Some days everything seems to go wrong. You get in trouble at school, your plans aren’t working out, and you just feel awful. How does God feel about you on days like that? Is God still taking care of you?

Today’s verse gives an answer to that question. It says that God has good plans for your life, not evil plans. He even knows how the end of your life will be. You have an “expected end” in His eyes. If you are God’s child, you know that your hopeful, happy future is an eternity in heaven with God. But God also has a plan for you in this life. He wants you to have peace and security—not because the world around is peaceful (it

usually is not!)—but because you have a powerful God watching over you and walking with you every step of your life’s journey.

Make up your mind that you’ll obey your Heavenly Father and dedicate your life to serving Him. Then He’ll be able to carry out His wonderful plan of peace for your life.

Thank God for the loving way He takes care of you. Thank Him that He has a plan for you—a plan for good and not for evil. Ask Him to help you obey Him as He carries out His plan for you.

Psalm 145:9—“The Lord is _____________ to all: and his _____________

mercies are over all his ___________________.”

You have learned that good and happy things come from God as gifts of His love. But what about the sad and difficult things that happen to you? Sometimes you get sick. Maybe someone close to you has gone away or even died. Maybe your family is going through a very difficult time. Who sends these hard things into your life?

The Bible teaches that all things—good and bad—come to you from your Heavenly Father. Today’s verse says that God’s “tender mercies” control everything He does. Even if He sends hard times into your life, it’s His tender love for you that causes Him to do so. Sadness and pain will bring you closer to your Heavenly Father if you allow it to. Difficulties will also help you serve God and others with a better understanding of what others are experiencing.

Tell God about some of the hard things in your life right now. Thank Him for these things, and ask Him to use them to bring you closer to Him.

Psalm 91:4—“He shall cover thee with his ______________, and under

his wings shalt thou _____________: his truth shall be thy _____________

and buckler.”

There’s an old story about a small village that caught on fire. Several huts and out-buildings were burned to the ground. When one family went back to what was left of their hut, they noticed one of their chickens, burned and dead in the ashes behind their home. Suddenly, one of the children saw two little chicks poking their heads out from beneath the mother’s wing. The mother chicken saved her babies from the fire by hiding them under her wings.

Today’s verse promises that God will take care of His children by protecting them—just as the mother chicken keeps her children safe by hiding them beneath her wings. Your Heavenly Father will keep you safe from evil that would harm you. God shows His love for you by taking care of you.

Thank your Heavenly Father for taking care of you and protecting you from evil. Thank Him that He loves you.

Genesis 28:15—“And, behold, I am ___________ thee, and will ___________

thee in all places whither thou goest, . . . for I will not ______________ thee.”

Today’s verse is a promise that God gave to Jacob when Jacob was lonely and far from home. God promised Jacob that He would be with him everywhere, taking care of him and meeting his needs.

God gives this same promise to all His children. Your Heavenly Father will never leave you. He’s with you all the time, no matter where you are or what you’re doing. God is faithful to be with you always. This is another way that He takes care of His children.
