Here’s What’s Cooking in the

Kitchen!You may cook a lot of meals for your family but each week our Food Service Staff provides 425 meals for the children in the Pre-school and Learning Center as well as 470 meals for the children and adults in the summer After School Program! When the Wednesday program starts up this fall they’ll prepare dinner for 250 – 300 every week. Also, it’s not unusual for them to cater a banquet or church event for 150-350 during the week as well.

Wednesday night dinner is still a bargain at $5.00 per adult, $4.00 per child, or $20.00 for the whole family, es-pecially when you consider that you get to visit with your friends and family, meet new people, you don’t have to cook the meal or wash the dishes!

Jelisa Montalvo, our Food Service Director, shops care-fully for the food and supplies to stay within the annual budget of $75,000. Your Food Service Committee is work-ing with her this summer to find smarter ways to pur-chase and account for food and supplies and to enhance the menus for adults and children.

Pastor’s Perspective Joanna Weaver wrote a book originally published in 2000 entitled, “Having a

Mary Heart in a Martha World: Finding Intimacy with God in the Busyness of Life.” We’re all familiar with the story in Luke’s gospel when Jesus stopped by Martha’s house to visit. Though I’m sure she was delighted to have Him in her home, the Bible says she was busy taking care of all the preparations that had to be made. By herself. Because her sister, Mary, was just sitting at Jesus’ feet, listening to what He said. When Martha complained to Jesus that her sister wasn’t helping her, Jesus told her Mary had chosen what is better. A gentle, but firm rebuke that it is easy to get caught up in the busyness of life – even doing important things – at the expense of experiencing intimacy with Jesus. And we need to take careful note of Jesus’ point.

But… the reality is that there is work to be done. And somebody has to do it. Important work. Work to which God has called us in and through the church. The problem is that a small minority of God’s people end up doing a vast majority of the work. More than their fair share. As they do so over an extended period of time, it is easy for them to get burned out. And some do. Over my years in ministry, I’ve seen a handful of very high involvement church members drop completely out of the church. Exhausted. And frustrated that others aren’t helping pull the load. And they have a point. The Bible paints a vivid picture of the church as the body of Christ. Where each member is valuable to the health and vitality of the body. Paul captures this important truth in Ephesians 4:16, “From Him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.”

I made an announcement in both services Sunday morning about the need for in-dividuals to serve on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings this coming academ-ic year. 90% of the positions that need to be filled are with our children and youth. I can’t think of too many things in life more important than making disciples. Invest-ing in the church’s primary mission and its future. If you are in a season of sitting at Jesus’ feet to deepen your intimacy with Him, take all the time you need. That season will inevitably lead to serving Him while it is still day. Thank you in advance for your prayerful consideration of where God might be leading you to serve.
