Teacher DevotionalWhen the sun comes out on a gloomy day, the day seems completely different. It’s as if the world is new again, bathed in bright light.

As bright as the sun is, Jesus is the light that brightens up the world even more. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12). He lights your life every step of the way.

Jesus’ light also shines through you to brighten up other people’s lives. You reflect His light in what you say and do. Ask the Lord to show you ways to reflect His light to others. Then listen for His promptings and act on them.

“Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matt. 5:16).

Understanding the BibleIn the Book of Genesis we learn that God created everything. Nothing existed before creation—except God (Ps. 90:2; Col. 1:17).

In the beginning God brought into being everything that is called the universe. He did this by simply speaking all things into existence.

God created light first (Gen. 1:3-4). Light alternated with darkness in an order which established the unit of time for a natural day.

On the fourth day, God created the sun, moon, and stars. They were to provide guides, regulate seasons, determine the cal-endar, and serve the good of God’s creation.

The sun, moon, and stars are a testimony of God’s glory (Ps. 19:1; Rom. 1:20).

Where Learning Happens

When Teaching the Bible to Toddler/2s…

Table—The table can be used for a free-play activity, snack, or the craft. For directions on setting up today’s craft activity, see Sun and Moon Collage in the Craft Step, page 10.

Rug—This is the place to gather children together for small group activities, depending on the size of your group. Invite them to the rug for the Bible Step, page 8. Today’s story is “God Made the Sun, Moon, and Stars” from Genesis 1:14-19 and Psalm 19:1-6.

This is also a good place for sharing stories or movement and the Music Time, page 9. Sing “All Things.”

Care Area—Take time for each child’s physical needs, including rest room breaks and diaper changes. Provide water and a snack when appropriate.

Books—A choice of books to explore pictures and words. There are many excellent books about Creation available. Set these out to read with the children. This week point out the sun, moon, and the stars as you read.

Blocks—Blocks of different sizes and shapes for building and creative play.

Toys—A variety of toys appropriate for two year olds to encourage play.

Home Living—Several baby dolls, blankets, play food, pots and pans, and uten-sils for children to imitate what they see in real life. Let children put dolls to bed and get them up again. Dramatic play about when to sleep and when to be awake will help the children understand the cycle of the sun, moon, and stars in today’s Bible story from Genesis 1:14-19 and Psalm 19:1-6.

God’s creation of the sun, moon, and stars was a “first” for the world. The children in your class will be going through many “first” experiences this year. Today may be the first time some of your children are in a “class” setting. Reassure anxious children that their parents will be coming back for them. Involving these children in an activity will help distract them and calm them down.

Your children will spend most of their

time during class moving and exploring, choosing, and playing in the learning environment. The learning environment is simply the books, toys, blocks, music, stories, and activities with which your children will interact from the moment they arrive to the time they go home.

While the children are busy exploring and play-ing, you can gather a small group to hear the Bible story from Genesis 1:14-19 and Psalm 19:1-6. You can also walk around the room, visit the children at differ-ent activities, and use the story mat to present the Bible Story Review.

This lesson is designed to allow toddlers and two year olds to play indepen-dently. This frees you to present the Bible Step, Bible Review Step, and Craft Step either to indi-viduals or to small groups throughout the class time.

8 Lesson 1–Toddler

Photo Poster 1

Toddlers love to look at photographs that show children. Sharing what they know about the sun, moon, and stars helps them connect to today’s Bible story from Genesis 1:14-19 and Psalm 19:1-6. Invite groups of four children or less to the rug for Talk Time. Use this rhyme to help capture

their attention.Stretch up tall, (Stand up and stretch.)

high as can be.Sit down quietly, (Sit down.)

with eyes on me!

Show Photo Poster 1. Point to the child and the sun. This child is ready to play out where the sun is shining. Point to the child looking at the moon. This child is looking at the moon. To help the children you might want to point to the sun, moon, and stars. When do you see

the sun? When do you see the moon? When do you see stars? Encourage the children to share about the sun, moon, and stars. The sun, moon, and stars are up in the sky. Today we’re going to talk about how God made the sun, moon, and stars.

Story QuestionsAsk the following questions to review the Bible story:

1. What did God make? (Sun, moon, stars)

2. Who made the sun, moon, and stars? (God)

Bible Story Time NNGenesis 1:14-19; Psalm 19:1-6

Toddlers and two year olds can usually identify the sun, moon, and stars. Today’s Bible story teaches young children about God’s creation using objects they know. Have your Bible open to Genesis 1. Our story today comes from God’s special book, the Bible.

The Bible tells us God made everything.God made the sun.The sun shines during the day when we play. (Open arms wide.)God made the moon. The moon shines at night while we sleep. (Lay head on hands.)God made the stars. The stars twinkle in the sky at night. (Open and shut hands.)God made the sun, moon, and stars. (Point up.)

Repeat the Bible story to help the children learn and remem-ber. You can also read this story from The Toddler’s Bible (on the CD in your CTA packet).

Story Mat with Story Figures 1, 2, and Story Card 1

Bible Story Review Time NNMaterials: Creative Teaching Aids—Story Figures 1, 2, Story Card 1, Story Mat

Touching and moving things are good ways for toddlers to learn. Encourage the children to handle the figures of the sun (Figure 1) and moon and stars (Figure 2) as they help you retell the Bible story.

Anytime after you have done the Bible Step, you can do the Bible Review Step. Keep the small group you have at the rug or visit children at different activities and tell the Bible Review story.

Music TimeNNMaterials: Creative Teaching Aids—CD, CD player

Music filled with energy and action is perfect for toddlers. They learn the way they like best—using their whole bodies and lots of energy! This song reinforces the Bible story, from Genesis 1:14-19 and Psalm 19:1-6, that God made the sun, moon, and stars.

“ALL THINGS” The complete song is track 1 on the CD in the Creative Teaching Aids packet. The words and movements can be found on page 71 of this teacher’s guide.

Children like to sing a song many times. Repeat “All Things” as you introduce the song to your class this week.

Use a small towel or blanket as a story mat for the figures. Punch out the figures and story card for Lesson 1. Lay the story mat on the floor in front of you and place the

story card by your mat. The mat helps define where the story takes place and makes it easy to see and pick up figures.

Put the sun and moon and stars, Figures 1 and 2, on the mat before telling the story. God made the sun. It shines during the day when we play. Who can find the sun? Have a child point to the sun, Figure 1. God made the moon. It shines at night when we sleep. Who can find the moon? Have a child point to the moon on Figure 2. God made the stars in the sky at night. Who can find the stars? Have a child point to the stars in Figure 2. God made the sun, moon, and stars.

Repeat the story to each child or group. Two year olds need to repeat things in order to remember them.

Craft Step

Lesson 1 Focus: God made the sun, moon, and stars.

Goodbye Time

10 Lesson 1–Toddler

Sun and Moon CollageThe process of doing a craft is one of the ways toddlers and two year olds learn. They discover how glue works by gluing and sticking paper.

Encourage each child to create more than one Sun and Moon Collage, as time allows. All the things your children create are treasures. You can send them all home.

Materials: Black construction paper Yellow and white construction paper Glue sticks Tape

Before Class: 1. Cut the yellow and white construction paper into circles, half circles, stars, and crescent shapes.2. Set a piece of black construction paper at each place at the table.

Craft TimeOur Bible story today told us that God made the sun, moon, and stars. Today we’re going to make pictures with paper suns, moons, and stars. Let each child choose several of the paper suns, moons, and stars. Have the children smear the glue sticks on the paper, then place the paper suns, moons, and stars on the glue. You may need to show children how to “color” the glue stick on the paper.

As the children glue and stick, talk about the Bible story from Genesis 1:14-19 and Psalm 19:1-6. God made the sun that shines when we play. God made the moon that shines at night when we sleep. God made the stars in the sky, too. God made the sun, moon, and stars.

Let the children make more than one Sun and Moon Collage.

As they leave, tell all the children, individually, you are glad they came. As you say goodbye, ask, “Who made the sun, moon, and stars?” Send home the cover of Starting Steps this week. Families can enjoy the calendar activities. Send each child home with his or her very own Starting Steps. One side connects each child’s family to today’s lesson; the other side includes a devotional, parenting tips, and an amusing anecdote.
