THE RETURN OFHORSEHEATHSaturday’s rescheduled Cambridgeshirewith Enfield Chace meeting saw thereturn of action to Horseheath afterlast season’s absence and I’m sureyou’ll agree that this was great to see.

On the day there were doubles forjockeys Gina Andrews and trainerDavid Kemp, with the former makingit three from three this season onBerties Dream in the Ladies Openbefore ending the day with victoryaboard James Owen’s Remarkable Man(8yo+ Open Maiden).

Kemp, who is currently on the side-lines after a fall at Godstone, beganthe day with victory in the 4,5,6&7yoOpen Maiden with Curraigflemens, before saddling Moroman to a facilesuccess in the Mens Open. In Kemp’sabsence Dicky Collinson stepped inon the former and Sam Davies-Thomas was on hand to steer homethe latter.

The other meeting on Saturday wasthe Western at Wadebridge and the in-form Darren Edwards banged inanother double, before adding anotherwinner twenty-four hours later at

Buckfastleigh’s South Pool Harriesmeeting, where it was also great to seethe Jockey Club Open Maiden MaresMaiden divide - only the second time amares maiden has divided so I’m told.

Tom Chanin also racked up threewinners over the weekend; however, his initial success came at Wadebridgebefore completing a double atBuckfastleigh the following day.

On Sunday That’s Rhythm wasarguably the most popular winner atBarbury’s Vine & Craven fixture; theevergreen 15-year-old was maintaininghis 100 per cent record this season, and in turn confirming to be one ofthe top Open horses in the sport.

Elsewhere at the meeting Katy Priceand James Nixon teamed-up to recorda double on the day with wins courtesyof Minellacelebration (Open Maiden)and Champagne Benefit (Restricted),the latter confirming the promiseshown when winning at Cocklebarrowearlier in the campaign.

Whilst at Thorpe Ed Glassonburygrabbed the headlines with a double, which included a win aboard QuantumTheory in the Mens Open as the pairupset the odds-on favourite Popaway.

Victor Thompson’s great run of formcontinued at Alnwick after he followedhis recent four-timer with a double; healso saddled two seconds and a thirdon the day, confirming his string to bein top form.

There was also a double for WilliamEasterby at Sinnington’s DuncombePark meeting; the highlight comingaboard the 20-1 shot Camden, whotook the feature race, the Mixed Open, when getting the better of Royal Dealand Young Hurricane who came homesecond and third respectively.

Turning attentions drastically to ourrecent Hiho Silver competition andI’m delighted to announce that thewinner is Sally Dickenson. Thankyou to all those who entered and I’mpleased to announce that we have gotplenty more competitions lined-upthroughout the seasonincluding thisweek courtesyof ThunderVodka (seepage 12)

GETTING TO KNOW YOUDate of birth: 27th October 1988.Job or profession: Research Scientist. Are you from a racing background? If not, how did you get started inPoint-to-Pointing? Yes, it’s been inthe family for generations, you couldsay it is in our blood. What was your first ride in public? Irode my first race at Horseheath onCooleventure. I was 6th and it was allrather a blur, but from then I washooked.First winner – name of the horse, owner & trainer, the date & thecourse: My first winner was onCooleventure (Vinny) at Flagg Moorfor my mother, Christine Banks, in thenovice rider’s race, 18th April 2006.Vinny ran away with me for the entirerace, which had never happenedbefore and hasn't happened since; Iwas dreading coming in as the racehadn’t gone to plan until he won!Apart from the first winner, whathas been your mostmemorable ride?Riding InvisibleMan atCheltenhamlast season, Ineverimagined Iwould getto ride

there. He ran a very credible race, andgranny’s smile when I came back intothe paddock was amazing to see.Is there a ride you look back onand think “could have donebetter?” Pretty much every ride; thereis always room for improvement. For which trainers/owners do youmainly ride? I generally ride for mymother and grandmother.Who has been most influential onyour riding career so far? Mummy,Granny and my Aunt, Angela Rucker.Which are your favourite courses? And for what reasons? BramptonBryan, as I always enjoy the WelshBorder meetings, also it’s my luckiestcourse. What car do you drive? Peugeot 208;it’s small and comfy, as well aseconomical.Name your perfect night in andperfect night out: My perfect night inwould be watching a film or havingdinner with friends; my perfect nightout would probably be going to aHunt ball.Where do you like to go onholiday? I usually try and gosomewhere hot where I can relax inthe sunshine, but I also enjoy moreadventurous travel. I am currentlyplanning on riding 400 km acrossSouth Africa.Who would be your ideal travellingcompanions to the races? My usualtravelling companions are Mum, Absand Granny, as well as Daisy (the

springer spaniel); soon to bejoined by Gordon and Ottie(also springer spaniels)What music are you

currently listening to? Imainly listen to Radio 1 in

the car, but I particularlylike Ed Sheeran, EmiliSande and Bruno Mars. What are yourfavourite films andTV programmes? By

far the best film I haveseen would be The Theory

of Everything and myfavourite TV programmeswould be the Great British

Bake off and DowntonAbbey.

What has been either your ownfunniest incident, or the mostamusing thing you have seen orheard at the races? David Griffithsflying past me superman style as I wasjumping a fence racing one day, andAbs trying to volt on the shetlandcompanion (Polly) at Larkhill one dayand going straight over!Who are your biggest heroes inracing? To ride at Cheltenham againand ride more winners. Are there any changes that youthink would benefit the sport in thefuture? I think having a race forhorses which aren’t quite good enoughfor Open company similar toConfined races with penalties butopen to all areas.

For how long have you beentraining?I've been training since 2008 when Ihad my first runner, Neuro - acomplete tearaway, I was 40L clearafter a lap.....40L behind after the 2nd!A steep learning curve. Thank god hecould jump!Where are you based?I'm based near Hay-on-Wye inHerefordshire - the town of books.Do you combine training withanother job or profession?I run a company called Communikate, selling mobile phones on all networks,as my 'proper job' and do the horsesbefore and after work. I also do somebloodstock work sourcing horses inIreland for pointing in the UK. I'malso mother to a 4yo girl Ruby. What training facilities doyou have available? We do things the old fashionedway with no walker or gallopsand get them fit riding aroundthe roads, forestries, and somegreat Welsh mountains. Themossy turf on the mountainsnever gets boggy and rarelyfreezes. We have chase fencesand hurdles expertly made byJumprite. How many horses do youtrain?I have 3 horses currently intraining: Minellacelebration,Champagne Benefit andSupreme Regime, and usually ahorse in to be sold. AmberFlush and Road To Successhave been sold in the last fewweeks and should do well for newconnections.Do you train for just yourself andfamily or for other Owners? This is the first season I’ve trainedsolely for owners without having a legmyself. Lord Lipsey and Nick Elliottare both fantastic owners, knowledgeable and supportive, andthey jump up and down shouting themup the run in just like me and thegrooms! We have great fun.Are you from a racing background? My grandfather, R.C. Price, held alicence for 40 years and trainedBentons Row to win the AintreeHurdle back in the 1960s - he gaveTerry Biddlecomb his first winner. MyDad rode winners under Rules on thegood mare Flights Orchid and myAunty- Jane Price - rode many winnerspointing in the 1970s. Even with a

horsey family it was my Mum whostarted me off in horses and took meto an event every weekend in myyounger years. What was the first winner you sentout – name, owner, rider, date, course? My first winner was Darnil, owned, trained and ridden by myself atBredwardine in May 2009.Of which horse performance areyou most proud?Ethiopia was a horse to be proud of -he won 4 races for us, he put us on themap and opened doors to trainingmore horses.Did you race-ride before youstarted training?I race rode for 2 seasons but

becoming a mother put an end to it.Nature’s way - stay safe to lookafter your offspring!Which jockeys do you useregularly?Harry Challoner and Ben Poste rodefor me before going conditional, JoeKnox and James Nixon now handlethe reins. What car do you drive?I drive a Mitsubushi Showgun - offroader. We never get stuck pointing!Describe your perfect night in andperfect night out:Nights out are few and far between asmy long-suffering partner Nick wellknows. He's a farmer and theynotoriously hate horses, he calls them'hay burners'. He'd like me to give itup. Sadly I'm busy in the winter andhe's busy in the summer. I'd never gethim on the back of a horse!!

Who would be your ideal travellingcompanions to the races? My two grooms Sian and Gem arealways along to go racing; we alwaysget lost and always have a giggle. What has been your funniestincident at the races? At Ystradowen Point-to-Point lastspring, I noticed the tyre on the trailerhad gone flat so being a useless girl Icalled the AA who changed the wheelfor me as our horse was running!!Which particular horse would youlike to train – in Points and underRules?I’d love to train any horse out of WPMullins yard. I have a few friendsworking there (who I'm always callingin for advice). To have a stable full of

so much talent must be somebuzz.Which horses do you have atthe moment that you wouldsay have good potential?A horse with great potential isMinellacelebration. He doeseverything quietly and easily. He's a bit boring at home, Ilaughed when Paul Nichollsdescribed Silviano Conti in thesame way! What ambitions do you havein racing? My ambition is to train a winnerunder Rules; my owner, LordLipsey, can't race midweek dueto House Of Lordscommitments but due to theelection he's off work fromApril this year, so we will try

and find a few to run in.Champagne Benefit has qualified forthe bumper final in May - I'd love towin that although he wouldn't take upthe free DBS entry. What are your opinions on thechanges in Point-to-Pointing inrecent years?Pointing has become much moreprofessional over the years; we arevery grateful to have been sponsoredthis year by Cardley Equestrian. I'msurprised more of the successful yardshaven't tried to take this up. Sadlythere has been a decline in peopleowning, training and ridingthemselves, but I hope that my smallteam and I are proof that it can still bedone, by riding before going on towork elsewhere, growing hay, oats, andbedding on the farm, no walker orgallops. If you have always dreamed oftraining you should have a go!

With a father who rode over 200 careerwinners, a mother who won her shareof races, and two sisters who both havea national championship under theirbelt, Jack Andrews would appear tohave a lot to live up to, but judging byhis fledging career to date he is far fromdaunted at the prospect, and hispotential has been recognised byestablished trainers such as CarolineFryer and Stuart Penny.

He started pony racing at the age ofnine, and twice finished runner-up inthe East Anglian finals, butunsurprisingly he couldn't wait to startPointing, and he had his first ride atHigham last year on Pheidias, just threedays after his sixteenth birthday. Hepulled up on that occasion, but went onto finish second on four of his ninesubsequent attempts, and he hascontinued to hit the goalposts in hishandful of outings this time. He isalways looking for more opportunities.

This season, he has twice competedagainst both his sisters. At Cottenhamin December, he pulled up in a Maidenin which they completed, but he got the

better of them at Higham, finishingsecond to Bridget's fourth, with Ginagetting to the fifteenth before calling ita day.

One ambition for the currentcampaign is to win the WilkinsonSword - Gina won the ladies'equivalent, the Princess Royal Trophy,in 2008. He has completed hisCategory ‘A' course, but with noHunter Chase rides in the pipeline hasnot yet applied for his licence.

He left school in the summer and isnow working with the half dozenPoint-to-Pointers at the Andrews'shome at Lilley, near Luton, sharing thetraining duties with his mother Joanna. He will take the majority of rideshimself, but he knows that the onehorse he would really like to get onwon't be available to him. "I'd love tokick Gina off [Cliff Myers's] CanMestret!" he admitted.

A youngster of which he has hopes isTotal Compliance, owned by long-standing yard supporter Penny Rogers, although the six-year-old is currentlywith Gina and her fiancé Tom Ellis. "I

do the schooling on my own," Jackexplained, "and because he's had noexperience he needed to go upsidesanother horse, which is why they'vegot him." He is likely to make his debutat Higham, after which he will returnto Lilley.

At well over six feet tall and 9st7lbsJack is the proverbial beanpole, but isaware that, like his father Simon, hisframe may fill out as he gets older. "ButI hope I don't get to that point!" heremarked irreverently!

He is grateful for the help and advicehe receives from Tom Ellis, and fromBridget's partner Harry Skelton, whilehe has spent some time at the yards ofboth the latter's brother Dan and PaulNicholls.

He will have to wait until April beforehe is legally old enough to drive, andmeanwhile relies on his parents tochauffeur him to meetings. He has, though, already picked the vehicle hewants when the time arrives. "Everytime I see a new Polo, I say to dad,‘Look, there's my car!'" he laughed, butSimon has yet to rise to the bait.

Tom McClorey's original equestrianinvolvement was in showjumping. Atthe age of 12 he moved to Shrewsbury,to Derek Black's training centre, andremained there until returning toNorthamptonshire four years later, when he was out of pony classes.

He names the highlight during thattime as his victory in the 1.30 class atthe Champions Of Scotland show onPanther, who was to go on in laterseasons to represent Great Britain ininternational team competition atFontainebleau.

At the suggestion of his sister Gemma,a successful event rider, he went to helpTik Saunders, who had broken herknee, with her horses. "I've got [sister-in-law] Caroline Bailey coming to watchyou school," Tik announced to amystified Tom one morning. "I had noidea who Caroline Bailey was," headmitted. "She could have beenanybody!"

The trainer was obviously impressedwith what she saw, as she offered him a

job, and he has now been at the yardfor six years.

He made his debut, for an outsidestable, on Hedchester - described by theform gurus as "an unsuitable ride," - atEyton in 2011, but the following yearopened his account at Brocklesby Parkon Arnold Layne, and has since takenhis tally to seven.

Had he not been concussed in aLarkhill fall in 2014 it might have beennine, as he missed out the followingweekend on two winners at Brafield, which at the time did not amuse him!He had previously missed the lastmonth of the 2012/13 campaign afterbreaking his leg in a fall from LadyVicstar at Dingley, but acknowledgesthat he has been fortunate to remainrelatively injury-free.

Tom shares the rides on the BaileyPointers with [Caroline's husband]Gerald's son Johnny. "We get on well -we ride for different owners in the yard,so there are no arguments," he smiled.

He is also first choice jockey for theConnell family, and is already lookingforward to partnering Legal Legend, onwhom he finished second to the highly-regarded Mr Mercurial at Larkhill, inthe Connolly's Red Mills final atCheltenham in May, while everyThursday he schools for RichardPringeur, a former Connell employee, who has increased the size of his stringthis year.

Although he will stay loyal to thetrainers who use him regularly, he isotherwise always looking for moreopportunities.

He rarely show jumps now, preferringto spend any free time socialising withhis girlfriend of five years, Jess Puffer, but 15 months ago was drafted into thePytchley's gate-jumping team as areplacement for Lydia Cope, who wasexpecting a baby. Clearing 5'8" put himin second place, but was not quiteenough to beat the eventual winnerCaroline Welby. "She wins them all,"was his excuse!

RECENT LANDMARKSJockeys firsts, doubles and other career highs by Carolyn Tanner

No fewer than six riders enjoyed theirfirst taste of success at the weekend, with a further three recording an initialdouble.

Heading the roll of honour was 17-year-old Olivia Hutchings, whofollowed up her victory on her ownLucius Fabeo at Wadebridge onSaturday by scoring on Ziggerson Hillat Buckfastleigh 24 hours later.

Olivia works full-time for ZiggersonHill’s owner Jackie du Plessis, forwhom she has been riding out sincethe age of 12.

Tommie O’Brien made the longjourney to Duncombe Parkworthwhile when landing the Veteran& Novice Riders’ race on Millers Reef, owned and trained by Justin Landy.Tommie, 22, who works for JonjoO’Neill, had picked up the ride on therecommendation of Justin’s fellowfarrier Tom Morgan.

It was a well-deserved triumph afterthe previous day’s disappointment,

when Tommie had travelled toHorseheath only to be denied hisintended mount on Minella For Steakafter arriving a few minutes late toshow his rider’s certificate due to beingheld up in the multi-vehicle pile-up onthe M40. He was also informed by theofficials that he would be barred fromriding because his medical bookcontained a red entry, but thisappeared to be an error by theauthorities and was quickly dealt withby the Medical Officer on duty.

Had this happened on a licensed trackthere would be no question about thedecision of the stewards, but Point-to-Pointing is an amateur sport which, with the decline in numbers of horsesand riders in recent seasons, should bedoing everything it can to encourage, rather than dishearten, young jockeys. On this occasion, with Tommie havinga genuine reason for his late arrival, some flexibility would not have goneamiss, a view shared by manyrespected figures in authority in thesport.

One rider who will have fondmemories of Horseheath is HarryMarsh, 19, who won the Dodson &Horrell Novice Riders’ race onSolstice Knight, despite doing ademolition job on the penultimateobstacle.

The winner, who was formerly withEdward O’Grady, is now owned andtrained by Harry’s father Simon, racingand bloodstock manager to Lord[Andrew] and Lady Lloyd Webber.

It was just a second ride for Harry, who will be going to DurhamUniversity to read Geography, andcurrently rides out for OliverSherwood.

A second ride also proved successfulfor Irishman James O’Reilly, 21, whogave a polished performance whenproducing Toodle Horse with aperfectly-timed run to win the MaidenDivision One at Thorpe.

James, who comes from ashowjumping family, has been basedwith Toodle Horse’s trainer SheilaCrow since September, and he

expressed his appreciation of the helphe has received not only from Sheilabut also her stable jockey, PaddyGerety.

He previously spent eight months withNicky Henderson, where he regularlyrode Josses Hill.

35 minutes after James’s victory it wasthe turn of debutant Billy Aprahamianto enter the winner’s enclosure aftertaking Part One of the MaidenDivision Two on Endofdiscusion, owned by his father John and trainedby Pauline Harkin.

“That’s the shock of the century!”exclaimed Pauline. “I thought he was areally slow horse!”

Billy, 25 just ten days previously, showed the benefit of a lesson withYogi Breisner, driving Endofdiscusionup the run-in to deny the favourite,First Fruit, by a neck, to the delight ofthe groupies who were cheering himhome!

Currently working in the family graintrading business, Billy is going to theRoyal Military Academy at Sandhurstin May, “So I want to make the mostof racing while I can,” he said.

20-year-old Harriett Bryce, who madeher debut in 2011 but has hadrelatively few opportunities since, wonthe 2m4f Maiden at Alnwick onDamiens Dilemma, a horse which shewas responsible for finding for ownerRobert Miller-Bakewell. The seven-year-old is trained by Lesley Coltherd,

wife of trainer Stuart Coltherd, forwhom Harriett has worked for a year.

Harriett enjoyed much success in Ponyracing, winning the East Anglianchampionship and reaching thenational final at Cheltenham. She stillreturns occasionally to ride in EastAnglia, where her father Tim andstepmother Alex [Embiricos] run aPointing yard.

James Nixon, who had triumphed onKings Apollo at Wincanton onSaturday, made it a weekend toremember when scoring onMinellacelebration (Maiden) andChampagne Benefit (Restricted), bothfor trainer Katy Price, at Barbury thefollowing day. He now heads thenational Novice Championship table.

James, 22, attended the NorthernRacing College and from there went toNicky Henderson, for whom heworked for three years. He is nowamateur to Henderson’s formerassistant, Tom Symonds, and openedhis account on Duc De Regniere atGarnons in 2013.

Buckfastleigh was the venue for TomChanin’s first double. Tom, 28, whoseinitial victory was on Stone Valley atTrebudannon in 2008, took theConfined on Kirkleigh, trained by hisfather Robert, and the GeldingsMaiden on Dicky Bob for handlerVerity Nicholls. Tom became acandidate for ‘ride of the season’ onthe latter, whose reins went over his

head after a blunder two out, causinghis jockey to jump the last with bothreins on one side and no stirrups. Withno steering apparatus, Dicky Bobgalloped so fast down the run-in thatTom was forced to bail out to avoid anunheralded entry into the paddock!

Tom, 28, who was formerly kennelhuntsman to the DartmoorFoxhounds, remains a Master of theBritannia Beagles, but is now workingfor Robert full-time.

Page Fuller needed to ride little morethan three miles to achieve her doubleat Barbury, the second leg being awalkover on Niki Royal.

Earlier in the day she had piloted theremarkable 15-year-old That’s Rhythm,on whom she won the 2013 AGALadies’ final at Stratford, to acomfortable victory in the MixedOpen.

Barbury was the course on which Pagemade a winning debut at the age of 16in 2011, when she won the NoviceRiders’ contest at the PPORC meetingon Mount Benger.

Her plan to read Economics andFinance at Exeter University has beenput on hold – “I did five weeks thendecided it wasn’t for me at the time, but I’ll probably go back to it,” – andshe is currently concentrating onracing, dividing her time betweenLambourn and the West country.

SCENE & HEARDTHE WILLIAM BULWER-LONGMEMORIAL NOVICES’HUNTERS’ CHASECliff Myers’s Can Mestret, who shareshis name with a restaurant inBarcelona, cruised to victory in theWilliam Bulwer-Long Memorial, hisdebut over regulation fences. He had, though, shown a liking for the tracklast season, when he triumphed in aPoint-to-Point in which slightly smallerportable fences were in use.

If there had been a slight concern, itwas over the eight-year-old’s ability tocope with the obstacles – “He was abit hairy when he first came fromIreland,” said trainer Simon Andrews– but he was virtually foot-perfect herein the hands of his regular partner,Simon’s daughter Gina.

It was a notable victory also for thejockey, for whom it was a fortiethsuccess on licensed tracks, meaningthat her claim against professionals isnow reduced to 3lbs. Her tallycomprises 37 National Hunt winnersand three on the flat.

The main problem Simon encounteredon the day was persuading his charge

to load onto the lorry. “He’s alwaysbeen a bit difficult, but never as bad astoday,” revealed the trainer, who putsCan Mestret’s aversion to loadingdown to the journey he experiencedwhen travelling from Ireland in 2013.“It was pretty stormy, and I think itwas a bad crossing for him,” explainedSimon, who makes sure that his stablestar always has a companion on board,on this occasion Cooleys Flyer.

Can Mestret, who wears a hood in hisraces to help keep him calm, is riddenevery day at home by Simon’s wifeJoanna. “He can be a bit quirky, andthere’s never a dull moment with him,but I love him!” she laughed.

It was originally the plan to run theson of Millenary in the Intermediateat Cottenham in the hope ofqualifying for the Connolly’s Red Millsfinal at Cheltenham, but in hindsightSimon felt the abandonment of thatmeeting might have worked out well

for him. “I think he’s slightly better ata sub-three mile trip, so the final hillcould find him out,” he opined. “We’llprobably run in a Ladies’ Open to tryto qualify for the [2m7f] AGA Ladies’final at Stratford.”

Runner-up in the four-horse contestwas Mister Teddy, whose handler FredHutsby had a couple of days to forget. His box broke down leavingFakenham, but worse was to followwhen his promising Vertical Glen tooka fatal fall in the Horseheath Restricted24 hours later.

Mister Teddy was partnered as usualby Tom Ellis, Gina’s fiancé, who hadhis own take on a possible post-racescenario. “There might be a divorceafter today,” he considered, adding “Itwould be a cheap way out, though!”

Those who had witnessed LutieAkinci’s fall from Bay To Go atMusselburgh two days previously, thelegacy of which was extensive bruisingon her stomach, might have beensurprised to see her walking, let alonerace-riding, but she donned HeatherKemp’s silks again to take third placeon En Suite.

The fourth runner was the one whichGina felt would have been her mainrival, Mister Chancer, who led the fielduntil pulled up lame by Claire Hartafter a circuit.

“He had some screws put in a fetlockjoint last year, so maybethat’s gone again,” wastrainer Richard Bandey’sfirst thought, but sadly itlater transpired that hehad shattered the otherfetlock, and he had to beput down.

THE REST OF THEMEETINGThe main attraction atFakenham wasundoubtedly A P McCoy,who delighted hissupporters by completinga double, but there was nomore popular successamong the locals than thatof Canuspotit in the day’smost valuable race, TheTim Barclay MemorialHandicap Chase.

Ridden by Leighton Aspellfor trainer Lucy Wadham,Canuspotit was carrying the fawn andwhite checks which have been worn toso many victories on horses owned bythe Wales family.

He was bred by David Wales, thenational Point-to-Point champion in1959, and is owned by him inpartnership with Simon Wood, IanMann and John Rix. “I’m delighted fordad. He’s had to be very patient, because he [Canuspotit] is stillimmature,” said David’s son William, who was standing as a steward at themeeting, and who himself rode over120 winners, 21 of them contributedby Swift Wood, winner of Stratford’sJohn Corbet Cup in 1980.

Swift Wood was a Fakenham specialist, but William estimated that it could

have been around 15 years since thefamily’s last triumph on the NH track, although there have been Pointingwinners since then.

There was no shortage of success onthe afternoon for trainers and riderswho have graduated from the amateurranks.

Nico de Boinville, who rode 13winners between the flags, took theBeginners’ Chase on Medieval Chapel, trained by his boss Nicky Henderson.Nico, well known as the work rider ofSprinter Sacre, is on the verge oflosing his claim, and is chasing the

2014-5 Conditional title, in which he iscurrently sharing the lead with SeanBowen, one ahead of Trevor Whelan.

Another Conditional, Paul John [seeProfile, 21 November], took anoteworthy scalp when making all therunning to win the Selling Hurdle onDont Call Me Oscar, beating McCoy’smount Staff Sergeant by three lengths.A confident Paul, who works full-timefor the winner’s handler Mark Gillard, was even able to take a cheeky lookround at his rival on the short run-in.

The ups and downs of a jump jockey’slife were clearly illustrated thefollowing day at Wincanton, whenPaul was airlifted to hospital afterbeing unseated on the final bend. He

was discharged 24 hours later, and washoping to be back in action within afew days.

Neil King, who recorded 50 winnersbetween the flags in East Anglia, hadproved his ability as a licensed trainerwhen based in Newmarket, but he hashit the ground running since movingto Wiltshire, and he kept up his goodstrike rate by sending out Unbuckledto land the closing Bumper.

A half-sister to the former smarthurdler United, Unbuckled is ownedby Heather Buckle, whose husbandJames is a Master of the Essex &

Suffolk Hunt, while theirson Charlie recentlyopened his accountbetween the flags on TheMaster Remover atAmpton.

Sarah-Jayne Davies had tobe content with a secondplace, but her charge TwinBarrels (Robbie Dunne)belied his 50-1 startingprice by making McCoy’sodds-on mount CapardKing fight all the way inthe Novices’ HandicapHurdle.

He was led up by herpartner Jeremy Mahot, who took home the £25turnout prize. “Not badfor a Frenchman!” hepointed out, although hedid admit that he had only

plaited the mane. “I don’t do tails!” helaughed.

Mikey Hamill made an immediateimpact on the British Point-to-Pointscene by riding a treble at Lockinge onhis debut in 2013. He turnedConditional at the end of thatcampaign, and is now based with NeilMulholland.

Mikey took a heavy fall from coursespecialist Full Ov Beans, and althoughthrown clear was then hit by afollowing runner. He was taken tohospital with a suspected shoulderinjury, but X-rays revealed someligament damage as opposed tobroken bones, so he should be able toresume in a couple of weeks.

SCENE & HEARD"I was going to quit riding thismorning!" joked winning riderGemma Garton, moments aftervictory aboard Kiestown Chief in theMidlands Area Club Novice Riders'race had brought full circle hersuccessful battle against Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma exactly a yearto the day since initial diagnosis.

Ideally placed to pick up the batononce early leader Enigma Variationshad checked out at the ninth fence, theExit To Nowhere gelding was foot-perfect under the Cheshire-based 32-year-old and found in spades to repelthe attentions of Slick Operator(Andrew Bartlett) by a length and ahalf.

"I was told that to win here you had tolead at the final ditch, so I thought Iwas in front too soon", Garton smiledafterwards, "but we held on - he's sogame and consistent. He's never beenout of the first four for us, apart froman eighth at Leicester on his last runlast year. Derek Smith rode him aftermy diagnosis, but we roughed the

horse off early to have him ready forme in 2015".

If that last statement alone hints at thebelief that Garton has had in herconquering cancer, then the similarlyupbeat and defiant messages on herVirgin Money Giving fundraisingwebsite - "I have learned that actuallyyou can live with cancer and you cancertainly beat it", etc. - eradicate anyremaining doubt; and the roughchronology of events on the siteincludes the terrific news of the finalall-clear last July, following six sessionsof chemotherapy.

Both the horse and rider's race-fitnessahead of this first return to the saddlewere as advanced as circumstances hadpermitted. "Gemma's been a bit shortof exercise, what with being back ather job at Manchester Airport fulltime", explained father and KiestownChief's owner Tim Garton, "but she's

been doing some running recently [inpreparation for the Wilmslow HalfMarathon on March 22nd] whilst themeetings have been frozen off, andshe and Kiestown had also exercised atJoe O'Shea's gallops as well ashunted".

Never over-raced, having sat out twoseasons following purchase by theGartons in 2009, Kiestown Chief willbe sensibly campaigned again with aview to taking in the Dodson &Horrell PPORA Novice Riders' SeriesFinal at Tabley on May 17th."Gemma's mother Tinker is secretaryof Knutsford Races, so the Tableyrace is absolutely the target - it wouldbe wonderful to line up in that with agood chance", continued Tim.

That fixture also represents the finalday of the Gartons' drive to raisemuch-needed funds for theconstruction of the new Manchester

Cancer Research Centre, andculminates in the running of a 1m2f"Legends' Flat Race"-type event inaddition to the afternoon's Point races.Further details can be found at theaforementioned Virgin website(http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/teamGG).

As with Kiestown Chief, the preferredlate-season target for Empire Builderhas been inked into the diary followingthe gelding's facile all-the-way successin the Connolly's Red MillsIntermediate qualifier under regularpartner George Greenock.

"I think we'll have a crack at the Final -he wouldn't be out of place in it",confirmed handler Gerald Bailey, whoin common with the rider was gettingoff the mark for the season. "He'swon two Club races so would have torun in those with big penalties now,but he would be good enough insteadfor hunter chases and he could winnovice chases, too. He's always been adecent horse, and George has got thehang of him now".

The nine-year-old could call upon allthe reserves of stamina required forthe extended 3m1f of thatCheltenham contest - or indeed forthe marathon event later on the samecard, should connections wish toconsider multiple options. "He ran inthe [Fernie] four-miler at Dingley, sostays all day", reminded wife andlicensed trainer Caroline, currently

presiding over a yard of 26 Rulesrunners alongside that for Gerald's tenPointers. It may also be worth notingthat the son of Brian Boru cannumber Irish National third ManusThe Man among his dam's siblings.

Is there a marketing opportunity in theoffing for Connolly's should EmpireBuilder land the Final, though? Itwould appear not. "John Sharp hasbeen a friend for years, so when hemoved from Dodson & Horrell Imoved mine onto Sharp Nutrition",smiled Gerald. "You support yourfriends".

A tilt at the Subaru Restricted Final atStratford on May 29th with Stonefieldis foremost in the plans of his ten-strong owning syndicate The EquusClub, eight of whom were on hand tosee the Cloudings gelding stridehalfway towards that goal when takingthe first and quickest of two divisionsof the Open Maiden under trainer andrider Tom Weston.

"He really picked up - he virtuallysprinted home", reported Weston onreturning to the paddock, very muchconfirming the visual impression; andthe seven-year-old's homework hadbeen no less impressive, connectionswere quick to add.

"We saw him do a piece of work twoweeks ago at Tom's, and he wasworking as well as if not better thanOver The Phone, and we know howgood he is", enthused John Bruce,

spokesperson for a syndicate whoseorigins lie at least in part in a drive forshareholders on the Jumping For Funwebsite a year ago. "On that evidencewe were very confident whicheverdivision he was drawn in - and yes,we've had a bet!"

Described only as "not expensive"when the subject of his purchase lastautumn was broached, Bruce seesStonefield as a project with severalyears still to run. "We want to go tothe Subaru Final and have a greatnight out, but he's probably dependenton soft or heavy to run and you don'talways get that at Stratford in May.Either way, he'll be better next term -all Cloudings come to themselves ateight or nine".

Strictly speaking there was no need forthe Open Maiden to split on the day,the total of 17 declared runners fallingone shy of the safety factor, but thedecision to divide will have beenwelcomed by those wanting their(mostly) relatively inexperiencedcharges to be afforded a clearer sightof Brocklesby's customarilyimmaculate but stiff fences.

No less nimble than Stonefield overhis obstacles, and only fractionallyslower, the Fred Hutsby-trained, TomEllis-ridden Kristian Gray was leftwith little to beat once market rivalNorton Grove crashed out early onthe final circuit and crossed the line 8l

clear of Castle Connell (DavidRenney), in what comprised a 1-2 foranimals hunted with the Warwickshire.

"That was worth the trip. It was worththe early start, too!", grinned ownerChristine Osborne, bill-payer also for2012-13's leading South Midlandsmare Tempered Steel. "We travelledwith the runner-up - we got to theRenneys at 7.15am and then headedup here. It makes up for missing outon Cottenham yesterday, thoughthankfully we had only been on theroad for 45 minutes when finding outit was called off".

"Fred has done a fantastic job withhim", continued trainer's wifeCaroline. "We saw one of his Irishraces on video - he's just a nice horsewho had a bit of form over there, andhe ran a great first race for us atChaddesley Corbett. He had a weekout in the field after that, just chilling. It's helped!"

None the worse despite what initiallylooked like quite a spill from NortonGrove in that Maiden, HarryBannister's afternoon took a markedturn for the better an hour later whena 2l victory aboard Carlton Ryan in theConfined opened his account for thecurrent season.

The mere detail of that winningmargin betrays little about the ridewhich preceded it, however, as therider's Morozov-bred partner seemedto be making insufficient progressfrom the rear - hindered by asprinkling of jumps out to the right -until a searing and sustained surgefrom three out took him past the lastof six surviving rivals (Tom McCloreyon Thetalkinghorse) with barely 50yards to spare.

"He's got a lot of speed, but he takes alot of winding up first", Bannistersuggested of his Steve Hollings-owned, Steph Easterby-trained chargeafterwards. And of the errantjumping? "I think that's a habit now. When Jo [Mason] rode him at SheriffHutton she corrected him each timehe went right, and then thought laterthat maybe she shouldn't have, so thistime I just let him".

The Yorkshire season is still, ofcourse, enough in its infancy forBannister to make up for lost time inthe Area title standings in pretty shortorder if he so chose. Local honours

are not at the top of his wishlist, however. "I'm leading the AmateurRiders' National Hunt Championshipunder Rules at the moment", heconfirmed, "and I'd like to win thatagain before turning conditional". Onewin clear of Steven Crawford whentaking the 2013-14 competition, the20-year-old currently enjoys a three-win cushion over Zac Baker this timearound.

It was the turn of another formerwinner of that particularchampionship, 2009 and 2010 victorOliver Greenall, to get off the markfor the current Pointing campaign inthe following Mixed Open aboard thetrainer-ridden stable stalwartThreapwood.

Just fifth in the corresponding race 12months earlier but a Restricted scorerhere a year before that, the son ofSulamani attacked the Brocklesbyfences with relish to oblige at the chiefexpense of last year's second and first

My Old Piano (prompting light-hearted requests from that one'shandler David Easterby to put thewinner in the Sales) and Court RedHanded. Favourite Doctor Kingsleywas rarely closer than his ultimate 15lfifth.

"The change of tactics did the tricktoday", confirmed Greenall. "He wasmore assertive and travelled verystrongly, so I could ride him moreprominently than usual". Equallyinspired by the gelding's performancewere members of the ownershipsyndicate The Crown Partnership, among some of whom talk turnedafterwards to a tilt at hunter chases fortheir charge - as yet, hunter chases inparticular and Rules racing in generalremain untried options forThreapwood.

The roll-call of horses on Greenall'swebsite currently numbers 26 in total, albeit including the now-retired TheWychough and the in-foal duo ofHoppy's Flyer (to Captain Gerrard)and 2013 Aintree Fox Hunters' Chaserunner-up Cool Friend (to theaforementioned Sulamani). Of thosevery much in active service for the2015 campaign, the eye is particularlydrawn to five-time Point victorQuantum Theory, still only nine yearsold despite his wealth of experienceand a recent transfer to the Stockton

Hall Farm operation from GaryHanmer's yard.

Also worth a mention from among theappreciable quantity of lightly-raced orunraced stock is Beware The Bear, aShantou half-brother to Martin PipeHurdle third Oscar Nominee andListed hurdle winner Mayfair Musicamong others, who has been sent toGreenall by longstanding local ownerGeorge Barlow (of Big Brown Bearand Bear's Affair fame) for a season'seducation in Pointing before returningto Nicky Henderson.

In total five consecutive winners onthe card were ridden by jockeysbreaking their ducks for the currentcampaign, and none returned to amore rapturous reception than the lastof those, Harry Burt, for whomRestricted glory on his trusted partnerMurphys Promise was gained despiteriding without the full complement ofirons for a portion of the homestraight.

Not that Burt was overly strugglingfor forward momentum during thefinal throes of the contest in anyevent, and the eventual margin ofthree parts of a length over I Believe(Paddy Gerety) still lookedcomfortable enough.

"I just gave him a whack and off hewent!", the 28-year-old smiled

afterwards, before fleshing out thewinning strategy a little further; "Iknew that [eventual third]Drivehomeregardles was the favourite,so I always kept him in my sights andthen went with him three out beforestretching them all on the homebend".

The one Brocklesby-hunted scorer onthe afternoon, and back in the care ofHarry and mother Racheal Burtfollowing a short-lived venture underRules with Dan Skelton last spring,Murphys Promise can now boast arecord of three wins from five underHarry as opposed to nought from sixfor other riders - including HarrySkelton and Guy Brewer.

A coincidence? Unlikely - the bondbetween Burt and his charge couldhardly be stronger. "He's the onlyhorse I ride, the only one I want toride, and the only horse I win on", thejockey clarified. "I hunt with him, andI broke him in, too".

Three successes inside 12 monthsaboard his willing partner is not to besniffed at, though Burt did feignunfamiliarity with the responsibilitiesof success during the post-raceprocedures. "I forget these things likeweighing in", he laughed, eventuallystepping onto the scales, "as it doesn'thappen to me very often!"

Who was capturing the action last weekend?

With two meetings on Saturday and fiveon Sunday, the photographers were outin force to capture all the thrills andspills. Julie Drewett of RacehorsePhotos managed a double header, taking in the Cambridgeshire withEnfield Chace at Horseheath onSaturday before moving south toBarbury on Sunday for the Vine &Craven meeting. Tim Holt was on hand

at the Western meeting at Wadebridgeon Saturday while the action furthernorth on Sunday was recorded forposterity by Grace Beresford (Percy atAlnwick), Nina Edminson (Sinningtonat Duncombe Park) and Peter Barber(Sinnington at Duncombe Park). Peteris a new recruit to Go Pointing, so wewould like to extend our thanks to him. There was no shortage of video

footage, either – six of the sevenmeetings were covered: WestcountryVideos were at the Western onSaturday, then the South Pool Harrierson Sunday; David Jones Media sentteams to both the Midlands Area Cluband the Sinnington, while KeithSimpson continued his excellentNorthern Area coverage with the Percyat Alnwick.
