GENEVA – Swedish Daysopened June 18 to a butter-yel-low sun in a bright blue sky,a sweep of light clouds and amild breeze – a perfect start tothe six-day festival in down-town Geneva.

Crowds packed ThirdStreet, listening to concertson the lawn, eating every-thing from roast beef sand-wiches to roasted ears of cornand shopping.

“As long as she’s shopping,she’s happy,” said Gary No-land of North Aurora, sittingon a bench with his wife, JudyNoland, and a cousin, KarenNeill, of San Diego. “And aslong as she’s happy, I’m hap-py.”

Noland was finishing upthe last of his Italian beefsandwich, his wife was eat-ing a roasted ear of sweetcorn and Neill was enjoyinga Ream’s bratwurst repletewith mustard.

“I came for the food be-cause you can’t get these outin California,” Neill said. “Itraveled 1,800 miles to helpmy parents, but we came hereto have a break, and it was anice break.”

A train display at the Ge-neva History Center, 113 S.Third St., also served as abig attraction. Amy Conleyof Geneva and her two sons,Andrew, 6, and Grant, 3, stoodwatching seven model trainsas they meandered throughan elaborate setup, haulingcargo and people.

“We’ve been here all morn-ing,” Conley said as her sonsgazed at the model engineshard at work. “We’re having agreat time. We have been hereat the history center all day,watching the trains. We’re go-ing to walk up and down thestreet and probably find somelunch.”

“We have been busy, lotsof families and kids to seethe train show and the ex-hibits,” said history centercurator Jessica Strube. “Weare charging admission, butthat’s not deterring anyone.”

The history center alsooffers a walking taco for awalking tour of 25 historicbuildings in downtown Gene-va. Executive Director TerryEmma explained what a walk-

ing taco is.“You take a small bag of

Fritos, you cut off the top, yousmoosh it a little bit,” saidEmma, speaking from a boothjust outside the history cen-ter. “You add a scoop of meat,and you do cheese, lettuce,sour cream and taco sauce,put a spoon in it, and you go.”

Lynda Johnson, secretaryof the history center board,suggested the walking tacoin connection with the walk-ing tour. By early afternoon,they sold 50 walking tacos andtours, and plan to be open forthe entire festival.

“We have 400 pounds oftaco meat waiting in the freez-

er,” Emma said.

“Lots of people from out of

town and locals mixed in as

well out to support the com-

GENEVA – Geneva fire-fighters and paramedics re-spond to an average sevencalls a day, 2,481 last year and1,080 so far this year, Depu-ty Chief Mark Einwich saidJune 17 while giving an over-view to the City Council on itspaid-on-call program.

The majority of calls, 65

percent, are emergency med-ical requests, the rest arefire-related, he said.

The department has threechief officers – includingEinwich – six career shiftlieutenants and four paid-on-call lieutenants, 12 careerfirefighters, six contract fire-fighter/paramedics and 28paid-on-call firefighters, orpart-time firefighters paidwhen they respond to an

emergency.“We are what is known as

a combination department,career and paid-on-call part-time personnel,” Einwichsaid. “Our POC members arepart time in name only. Wehave the complete expecta-tion they are completely inter-changeable with our full-timepersonnel. The emergencydoesn’t dictate … whether it’sa career person or a part-time

person that responds.”Einwich said paid-on-call

are trained to nearly the samelevel as a career firefighter,with the only difference beingcareer firefighters also mustbe trained paramedics.

“They operate all of ourequipment, they drive allof our apparatus,” Einwichsaid. “They are completelyintegrated into all of our fieldoperations. We very highly

depend on them.”It’s an important distinc-

tion because the Geneva’s is“a full service department,”Einwich said.

“We provide fire rescue[emergency medical service]hazardous materials, tech-nical rescue – which encom-passes a specialty rescue typeof situation, high angle trenchrescue, confined space, build-ing collapse,” he said.

Geneva man chargedwith heroin possession

GENEVA – A Geneva manwas charged June 10 with fel-ony possession of heroin afterlocking himself in a coffee shoprestroom, police said.

T y l e r E .White, 21, ofthe 300 blockof North FirstStreet, Geneva,also was chargedwith felony ob-struction of jus-tice for reported-ly trying to hideevidence, and misdemeanorpossession of a hypodermic sy-ringe and drug paraphernalia.

White was being held in theKane County Jail on $75,000bond and was scheduled to ap-pear in court June 19.

The felony charges carry apenalty of one to three years inprison and a fine of up to $25,000each, and the misdemeanorshave a penalty of up to a yearin jail and a fine of up to $2,500.

According to reports, po-lice were called to Starbucks,229 W. State St., Geneva, inresponse to a man who lockedhimself in the restroom and

would not come out.An officer got the door un-

locked and saw a cellophanewrapper containing severalsmall tinfoil packets on theback of the toilet and a usedhypodermic needle on the floorunder the sink. Then the offi-cer saw the items were missing,the report states, and he askedWhite where he put them.

Another officer arrivedand got a call from the Gene-va Police Department’s frontdesk, telling police to checkWhite’s right shoe.

Inside the right shoe, policefound a hypodermic syringe,a metal spoon and two cottonswabs. And inside White’sright sock, police found twotinfoil packets believed to beheroin, according to the report.

According to Kane Coun-ty court records, White hasanother felony charge pend-ing. He was charged April 26in Aurora with possessionof ecstasy pills. White hadposted $5,000 bail, 10 percentof a $50,000 bond that wasset, in connection with thosecharges. According to courtrecords, White was to appearin court June 13, on the previ-ous charges.

Tri-Cities foreclosure activity declines inMay

Home foreclosure activi-ty again declined in the re-gion in May, continuing atrend of brightening marketconditions in Kane Countyand elsewhere.

Last month, the numberof homes that were facingforeclosure in central andwestern Kane County de-creased about 18 percent,compared to May 2012, ac-cording to the latest roundof foreclosure data.

RealtyTrac, a companyspecializing in trackinghome foreclosure activityacross the country, report-ed that in May, 189 homesfaced foreclosure actionsbrought by lenders acrossa nine ZIP code region thatincluded the Tri-Cities of St.Charles, Geneva and Bata-via, and six other communi-ties: Campton Hills, Elburn,Sugar Grove, Maple Park,

South Elgin and North Au-rora.

In May 2012, that sameregion sustained 230 fore-closures, according to Real-tyTrac.

While pronounced, thedecline fell far short of theslide in foreclosure activityreported by RealtyTrac inApril. Two months ago, theTri-Cities and six surround-ing communities loggedonly 76 foreclosures, Real-tyTrac reported, a declineof 61 percent from the samemonth a year earlier.

However, the data forMay continues to squarewith other data from thehousing market locally andnationally.

Lender Processing Ser-vices, for instance, reportedthat delinquency rates inthe U.S. dropped in April toless than 6.5 percent for thefirst time since mid-2008,while Americans facingforeclosure declined 25 per-

cent in April.And locally, the number

of homes being sold as a re-sult of foreclosure or shortsale continues to decline, aswell.

In the Tri-Cities, infor-mation reported by theMainStreet Organization ofRealtors indicated that inApril, so-called distressedproperties accounted forabout 21 percent of all hous-es sold in St. Charles, Gene-

va and Batavia.Home sale numbers for

May have yet to be reported.RealtyTrac said foreclo-

sure activity declined na-tionally in May by 28 per-cent from May 2012, andstatewide by 47 percent.

Kane County continuedto suffer the worst foreclo-sure rate in the state, with1 in every 274 homes in thecounty in foreclosure, Real-tyTrac said.

Gordon Bowe doesn’t be-come personal friends withall of his passengers.

But after more than threedecades of walking the aislesas a conductor on Metra

trains to and from Chicago,Bowe, known by many as“Gordo,” has come to knowthose who ride the trainsfrom Elburn through LaFoxand Geneva, sometimes morethan they may know.

“You know where they’regoing to stop, and what

they’re going to do,” Bowesaid. “Because they do it thesame way every day.”

As proof, Bowe, stand-ing in the center vestibuleof a Metra train car on arun from Chicago’s OgilvieTransportation Center to El-burn, points down the aisleto a woman with blonde hair,seated at the end of the row,her back turned to the rest ofthe train.

“She sits in that same seatevery day,” Bowe said. “AndI know she’s getting off in Ge-neva, because that’s whereshe gets off every day.

“I just know my regulars,”he added, with a smile and ashrug.

And then, with a cry of“Tickets, please,” Bowe is off,again, down the aisle.

Bowe, 58, of Lake in theHills, has been working therails since he was 21, begin-ning with a job maintainingdiesel locomotives.

From there, Bowe trainedto become a conductor andtransitioned into the onlycareer he has known since,working the rails on UnionPacific lines in Chicago andits suburbs.

“They told me early onthat I better decide fast ifthis was really for me, be-cause it’s going to get in yourblood,” he said. “And theywere right.”

Bowe worked with UnionPacific freight crews until1986, when he transitioned toUP’s passenger trains.

For the past three years,Bowe has worked as a con-ductor on the Union PacificWest line from Elburn toChicago. Bowe’s day beginswith a 3:30 a.m. wakeup calland a ride from McHenryto Ogilvie TransportationCenter, where he boards thetrains to Kane County wherehe will work through themorning rush.

While on the trains, Bowecollects train fares and main-tains safety and order. Muchof his time is spent walkingthe center aisle of his as-signed train cars, makingsure everyone aboard haspaid.

“I’ve got my little tricks

to remember who’s paid andwho hasn’t, just like everyconductor,” Bowe said. “Andfor those who haven’t paid,usually just a good hard starewill do the job and get themreaching for their wallet.”

But Bowe has tasked him-self with an additional re-sponsibility, as well: helpingpassengers enjoy their trip,no matter the purpose oftheir train ride. For morningcommuters, that will includea cheerful greeting and smile,and perhaps a joke or two.

“I love to get them chuck-ling,” he said. “That’s one ofmy goals each day.”

On some days, the effortcould include a bit of crowdcontrol, to quiet loud mobilephone talkers or calmingthose whose language maygrow too vulgar or whose be-havior may become a bit tooaggressive.

He said such incidentshave become less on histrains since he eliminatednight runs from his schedule,and greatly reduced the num-ber of drunken sports fans inhis care each day.

“Taking people to their

sporting events is a lot lessstressful than bringing themhome,” Bowe said.

Despite his desire to makethe train fun, Bowe still won’tallow passengers to put theirfeet on seats or hold the doorstoo long for passengers.

“If we see someone on the

platform, making a real ef-

fort to catch the train, we’ll

hold the door,” Bowe said.

“But if they’re just lollygag-

ging, well, we’ve got to stay

on schedule.”

But in those instances in

which Bowe must deliver

messages passengers don’t

want to hear – such as ask-

ing them to remove their feet

from the seats or to hunker

down for a lengthy delay be-cause of an incident on thetracks ahead – even then hetries to take as gentle of anapproach as possible.

“I try to stay sympathet-ic,” Bowe said. “It makes iteasier for them to digest whatI’m saying.”

However, times still arisewhen conductors must re-move passengers, and inthose instances, Bowe said hefirms up.

“That’s the only way todo it,” he said. “As soon asthe man with the badge andthe cuffs shows up, everyonepromises to be nice again,but we know it’s not going tolast.”

BATAVIA – When MichelleMarquardt Greene moved to St.Charles with her husband, Kev-in Greene, they had a hard timefinding a place in the Tri-Citieswhere they could participate inone of their favorite activities– swing dancing.

So in January, they decidedto start their own organization,Tri-City Swing Dance. Theynow teach swing dancing andother types of dances, such asthe lindy hop, at A Step AboveDance Academy in Batavia onTuesday evenings.

“Our desire is to share thiswonderful phenomenon with asmany people as possible becausethe friends we have made swingdancing are some of the best wehave in our lives, and we wantto share that experience with asmany people as possible, as wellas build that community aroundourselves,” Kevin Greene wrotein an email.

The classes cost $5 each,which Marquardt Greene saidgoes toward bringing jazz andswing musicians to the com-munity. They’ve raised enoughmoney to throw their first bigevent – hosting the St. Lou-is-based swing band Miss Jubi-lee and the Humdingers at Wa-ter Street Studios in Batavia onSaturday, June 29.

“They’re electri fying,”Marquardt Greene said. “It’slike you step into a room andyou step back into the 1930s or1920s.”

“Their sound is great – if youclose your eyes, you can reallyimagine you’re back in time,”

Kevin Greene wrote in an email.The band is fronted by Val-

erie Kirchhoff, who MarquardtGreene said channels a youngJudy Garland when she sings.The band members dress in vin-tage-style clothing, as well, shesaid.

For Marquardt Greene, jazzand swing music never has goneout of style.

“This particular music isjust classic. You can alwaysplay it, and it will always begreat,” she said. “Today’s mu-sic is rooted in this old jazz beat.It’s almost that standard you goback to that you’re able to easilylisten to.”

Tri-City Swing Dance focus-es on what Marquardt Greenecalls East Coast Swing. A groupof dancers now meets regularlyin Batavia, learning basic swingand the lindy hop in the style ofthe old Savoy Ballroom danc-ers in Chicago from the 1920sthrough the 1940s.

It was through swing danc-ing that Marquardt Greene andher husband met. They wereboth in New York and met oneanother while going out swingdancing with friends. Whenthey moved to St. Charles, theyhad a hard time finding swingdancing venues, so they decidedto start their own.

“We thought, let’s build a

community here,” said Mar-quardt Greene, noting thatthey found several experiencedswing dancers who had beenlooking for the same outlet.

“The dance itself is, to me,a wonderful example of com-munication and shared artisticexploration. One thing I loveabout dancing is that you’re notjust dancing with your partner,you’re also dancing with thesong your dancing to – it’s athree-part partnership,” KevinGreene wrote in an email.

Marquardt Greene said shehopes to fill that void in theTri-Cities by bringing moreswing, jazz and blues acts to thearea through Tri-City SwingDance.

“I feel like there aren’t out-lets in our area that bring musi-cians like this, or hidden talentsto our area,” she said. “This isa very special event becausethey’re high-quality musicianswho are highly sought after. It’san event that creative people inour area will sort of flock to.”

Eric Schelkopf: Is it fun for youto go to these different conven-tions? What do you get out of theexperience?

Tony Anselmo: I have friendsthat live out there for this one,so it’s an opportunity to kind ofkill two birds with one stone.

I do go to a lot of differentconventions, and I always en-joy meeting fans. It’s nice to beappreciated by them.

ES: You’ve been the voice ofDonald Duck since 1985. I under-stand that Clarence Nash, the

original voice of Donald Duck,trained you before he passedaway.

TA: I was his apprentice. So,I was already there as an ani-mator, working on traditionalanimated features. That’s howI started at Disney in 1977.

And I became Clarence’sapprentice for Donald a fewyears into it. I did that forabout three years. I hadn’t re-

corded anything while he wasalive.

When he passed away, hehad arranged it for me to carrythe torch from there.

ES:Was it hard toget thevoicedown?What tips did he give you?

TA: Well, if I told you that, Iwould have to kill you, in trueChicago style.

It was a long process, so it’snot even an easy explanation.

ES:Whatmade youwant to doDonald Duck’s voice?

TA: I was doing other in-cidental voices, and Donaldwasn’t one that I could do, so Ithink he saw potential.

Besides Clarence Nash,who showed me how Donaldsounds, I also had a mentor,Jack Hannah, who was thedirector of the Donald Duckshort cartoons made underWalt Disney.

He was the one who showedme how to draw Donald andanimate him. I don’t know if alot of people know I do both. Asan animator, I’ve worked onsuch films as “Beauty and theBeast,” “The Little Mermaid”and “The Lion King.”

The first one was “Mickey’sChristmas Carol.” That wasthe first chance I had to drawDonald. Clarence did the voiceof Donald in that one, and thena couple of years after that, Itook on the voice, as well.

ES: I understand you wantedtowork for Disney since youwere

young.TA: Well, when I was 16, I

would go in and meet withthe animators. I was writingthem for advice and talking tothem on the phone about whatI needed to learn in school towork at Disney.

ES: What makes Donald Duckand the other Disney charactersso enduring?

TA: Walt understood about

putting personality in anima-tion. The Warner Bros. car-toons and the MGM cartoonswere based on gags.

Walt understood person-alities that an audience canrelate to and that are appeal-ing. And that is what makesthem timeless and resonatewith the audience in a waythat you always rememberthem.

ST. CHARLES – WaterStreet Studios, a nonprofit artcenter in Batavia, recentlyhas expanded into St. Charleswith a new location in thedowntown area.

The Water Street Stu-dios PrintLab, 117 W. MainSt., St. Charles, is a roughly1,000-square-foot space in thebasement of Biggby Coffee. Itis a place for working artistsand families to dive into print-making mediums individual-ly or in a classroom setting.

“We’re expanding becausewe’ve run out of space in ourcurrent location in Batavia,”

said Jim Kirkhoff, WaterStreet Studio’s director of de-velopment and one of the artorganization’s founding mem-bers. “It’s a lot of work, but it’san important element of ourmission and something we’vewanted to do for a long time.”

A major component aidingin acquiring additional spacewas the grant Water Streetreceived to buy machinery,which expanded the organi-zation’s offerings in the print,ceramics and metal work me-diums. Water Street received$9,945 from the CommunityFoundation of the Fox RiverValley – a nonprofit, philan-thropic organization – for aprogrammable kiln control-

ler, plasma cutter and screenprinting equipment.

Water Street also receiveda $6,000 grant from the KaneCounty Riverboat Fund pro-gram to put toward the artcenter’s Access program.

The Access program will“make the equipment avail-able to the general public aspart of open studio rental orWater Street membership,”Kirkhoff said in a news re-lease.

Kirkoff is looking forwardto working within St. Charlesto bridge the gaps between theart communities across theTri-Cities.

“[Water Street] is a re-gional organization, and wecontinue to look for ways tobring together artists fromall over the region,” Kirkoff

wrote in an email, in which healso wrote that the expansiongoes in stride with filling Wa-ter Street’s mission to createa personal and diverse venuefor creativity, collaboration,expression and education.

The idea of PrintLab isto allow people to transitionfrom taking classes at WaterStreet Studios to working ontheir own, while also provid-ing working artists the spaceto create without a capital in-vestment, Kirkhoff wrote.

Taking PrintLab to St.Charles was the first step andwill be followed by offeringclasses and other media to thepublic, Kirkhoff added.

PrintLab eventually willoffer lithograph, screen print-ing, relief printing and digi-tal inkjet printing classes and

workshops to the public.In addition to the classes

and workshops, which willbe announced periodicallyon Water Street’s website andFacebook page as the staff con-tinue revamping programs forthe new facility, PrintLab alsowill offer Awesome Art After-noons – similar to the eventsat its Batavia location – from1 to 3 p.m. on Sundays for fam-ilies to pop in and explore dif-ferent mediums of art.

“It’s a way to get familiesworking together on a cre-ative project,” Kirkoff said.

I decided to try the Phillycheesesteak on French bread,with a side order of mush-rooms. Believe me when I tellyou that Run-A-Way doesn’tskimp on portions. My chees-esteak was filled to the pointof bursting with thick chunksof steak, along with a plentifulsupply of peppers and cheese.

The meat was tender, butnot too tender, and the Frenchbread provided robust flavor tothe sandwich.

The side order of mush-

rooms – which also were freshand full of flavor. My wifeagreed, adding she liked thebuttery taste.

Micah Coffey doesn’t just

play three sports.

During a remarkable ju-

nior year at Batavia, Cof-

fey quarterbacked a state-

ranked football team, was

the leading scorer for the

Bulldogs’ basketball team

and batted third and played

first base for a Batavia

baseball team that, like the

football team, nabbed an Up-

state Eight Conference River

championship.

Coffey’s year-round in-

vestment paid off handsome-

ly in each season, earning

him Kane County Chroni-

cle-St. Charles Bank & Trust

Male Athlete of the Year hon-

ors for 2012-13.

Coffey’s sports calen-

dar is booked to an extreme

but, like older brothers Jor-

dan and Jesse and younger

brother Canaan, he’s not

complaining.

“It’s one of those things,

my parents have always

emphasized if you still love

a certain sport, you should

still go ahead and play it be-

cause this is the only time

in your life you can play all

three,” Coffey said.

In Coffey’s case, each can

be played with plenty of flair.

As football and basketball

teammate Zach Strittmatter

noted, Coffey has the knack

for looking calm and inspir-

ing confidence in teammates

even under duress. During

baseball season, he sported

long, flowing hair that gave

him a West Coast-look, and

his leadership style matches.

“I’ve had a number of

college coaches who have

witnessed him play who

have kind of described he

has that ‘It factor,’” Batavia

football coach Dennis Piron

said. “That whole package,

that leadership, that ability

to thrive in pressure situa-

tions. He has a high level

of comfort. When he plays

games, they look easier for

him than anybody else out

there.”

Coffey won the starting

quarterback job for a Bat-

avia football program with

sky-high expectations, and

he had to replace one of the

school’s all-time greats, Noel

Gaspari.

No sweat for Coffey – at

least, by the looks of it. A

First Team All-Area Chron-

icle QB, Coffey passed for

1,732 yards and 18 touch-

downs while guiding the

Bulldogs to their second

straight undefeated regular

season.

If there’s a time of year

that tests Coffey’s resolve to

stick with three sports, it’s

November, as basketball

season bears down with his

body still hurting from foot-

ball.

“Transitioning straight

from football into basketball,

there were a couple weeks

where every day I’d wake

up, my legs were so tired and

sore, and I’d have to go to

practice later,” Coffey said.

“So there was a little bit of

[questioning], but I’ve been

blessed with so many great

coaches and teammates who

make it fun.”

The sight of a 22-foot

shot rippling the net also is

known to have a restorative

effect.

Coffey, a shooting guard,

led the Bulldogs’ basketball

team in scoring (11.6 points

per game) while sinking 38

percent of his 3-point at-

tempts and shooting 85 per-

cent from the free throw line.

His basketball game is

heavily reliant on shooting

touch, which he somehow

maintains despite his divid-

ed offseason responsibilities.

“It’s kind of weird – it

almost seems like he’s the

one kid that his shot doesn’t

leave him, ever,” Strittmat-

ter said. “In the summer, he

comes back and it looks just

as it did when we finished in

the winter with basketball

season. He puts in a lot of

time, I know he shoots a lot

in the gym with his dad and

his other brothers, too, but

it’s almost like his shot nev-

er leaves him.”

Cof fey ’s banner year

spilled into the spring. Coffey

batted .386 while slugging 17

extra base hits, including a

team-leading 11 doubles, and

drove in 25 runs for the base-

ball Bulldogs, who tied even-

tual Class 4A third-place fin-

isher St. Charles East for the

conference championship.

It ’s mid-June, so that

means Coffey already is

knee-deep in preparations

for next school year in each

of his three sports. His se-

nior year is a source of mas-

sive enthusiasm on mul-

tiple fronts, including the

possibility to team up with

Canaan, who will be a soph-

omore, in basketball and po-

tentially football.

From a team standpoint, a

pair of crushing postseason

upsets this school year – to

Downers Grove North in the

first round of the 7A football

playoffs and to Hoffman Es-

tates in a baseball regional

semifinal – provide motiva-

tion for the 2013-14 school

year.

“You can’t take anything

for granted,” said Coffey,

who likely will play football

or baseball in college. “Re-

cords mean nothing when

you get to the playoffs, so re-

ally making sure every game

has that same kind of focus

and same kind of intensity

going into it. I don’t think we

lacked intensity, but that’s

a major emphasis this year

is don’t take anything for

granted. As I learned twice

this year, you never know

how suddenly it can end.”

The good news for Cof-

fey: When something ends,

a promising, new beginning

never is far away.
