Old DutchMill a Fabyan ‘showpiece’By KARA SILVA

[email protected]

GENEVA – Batavia mighthave the largest assortmentof windmills in the Tri-Cities,but Geneva is home to theonly one listed on the Nation-al Register of Historic Places.

Standing 68 feet tall atopa grassy knoll overlookingthe Fox River sits Col. GeorgeFabyan’s pricey “showpiece”– the Dutch Mill, better knownas Fabyan Windmill.

Situated in Fabyan For-est Preserve in Geneva, therefurbished and operational,extravagantly-styled Dutchwindmill was built in 1875, andadded to the register in 1979. Ithas resided in Kane County fornearly 100 years.

Fabyan was a rich busi-nessman who inherited a largesum of money from his father’stextile business, Bliss, Fabyan& Co., and with deep pocketscame extravagant purchas-es. Sprawled across about 300acres of Fabyan’s RiverbankEstate was a lavish assortmentof eccentricities, includinga villa remodeled by FrankLloyd Wright, a zoo, Japanesegardens, a Roman-style swim-ming pool, greenhouses, grot-toes, a lighthouse and, in 1914,a windmill.

Theories abound as to whyFabyan bought the formerlydecrepit windmill for $8,000,and then paid an additional$75,000 to have it disassem-bled and transported fromthe Lombard area to Geneva, where it was reassembledwith high-end improvements.

Some evidence suggests itwas a gift for his wife, whilea Chicago Tribune newspaperarticle from 1915 – gatheredby Head Miller Mark Riveccoand windmill researcher RonBehnke – apparently stated itwas Fabyan’s desire to make“whole-wheat bread – madefrom real flour” that causedhim to buy the mill.

Rivecco has volunteered atthe mill for almost a decade, logging roughly 300 hours ofservice a year. He also givescommunity lectures about thewindmill’s history.

“I’ve been quoted beforesaying that ‘[the windmill]was a big lawn ornament,’ butI do believe, altruistically, thathe wanted to save this historic

structure. His actions certain-ly did that,” Rivecco said.

“But, I also believe that hewas a collector of objects of in-terest to him, whatever thatinterest happened to be at thetime,” he said. “He placed [thewindmill] on the site acrossthe river from his villa, whichwas visible from his deck.”

Fabyan may have pre-served the windmill, but itshistory dates back further.

The windmill was con-structed by German immi-grant Louis Frederick Back-haus and his brother-in-law,Friedrich Brockmann, whobuilt it from a prefabricat-ed Dutch-built kit in an areacalled York Center (now Lom-bard) to grind grain.

Over time, the windmillfell into disrepair, which iswhen Fabyan entered the

picture and paid the Edgar E.Belding Co. to move the wind-mill to Geneva.

“They took it apart pieceby piece,” Rivecco said. “Theymade drawings and mark-ings, and then they disassem-bled it.”

Roman numerals, still vis-ible on the windmill’s beamsand braces, were carved intopieces to ensure correct re-construction.

“The assembly went to-gether well – the guys whoworked on this back thenwere true craftsmen,” Rivec-co said.

According to “The FabyanLegacy” chapter of the book“Geneva, Illinois: A history ofits Time and Places,” it took19 months to reconstruct thewindmill and make it opera-tional.

“Until you see it moving andyou’re inside [the windmill]and seeing all of the intricatemoving parts, you really don’thave an inkling of the engineer-ing feat that it is,” said RobbCleave, volunteer coordinatorfor the Kane County ForestPreserve District.

Aside from the varnishing, hardwood floors and elegantfinishes, Fabyan added a con-crete basement with a bakery, something not normally asso-ciated with windmills, Rivec-co said.

According to the forestpreserve’s website, it took 33workers mixing concrete byhand to build the foundation, which measured 42 inchesdeep and more than 2 feetthick.

“The windmill is so uniquethat not even in Holland

you’d be able to find [one]this pretty,” Rivecco said.“Windmills are factories. You minimize the amount ofmoney you put into your fac-tory – but Fabyan turned itinto a showpiece.”

In 1980, the windmill ap-peared on a U.S. postage stamp, selected along with four otherAmerican windmills that wereall featured in a booklet called“Windmills USA.”

The 21st CenturyAfter Fabyan died in

1936 and his wife in 1939, thewindmill and its land werebought by the Kane CountyForest Preserve District for$70,500, according to the web-site, www.Illinoiswindmills.org.

The Old Dutch Mill – also referred to as the Fabyan Windmill – is a working windmill from the 1870s and is located at the Fabyan Forest Preservein Geneva. The wooden mill is part of the Kane County Forest Preserve District.

See MILL, page 4

Page 4: GNR-5-30-2013

In 1997, the forest preservecontracted third-generationDutch windmill maker LucasVerbij to restore the mill to itsformer glory.

“The Fabyan Windmillis the best example of an au-thentic Dutch windmill in theUnited States – actually it’s atreasure and would be the mostpopular windmill in the Neth-erlands,” Verbij is quoted assaying on the forest preservedistrict’s website.

During the restorationprocess in 2003 or 2004, a qua-

si-time capsule was discoveredunder the shingles of the cap –or roof – of the windmill.

“Apparently, there was anewspaper enclosed in a spacefrom the 1912-1913 timeframe,”Rivecco said. “During the res-toration, they took a contempo-rary newspaper ... signed theirnames to it and put the two [pa-pers] back in the hole on top ofthe cap.”

A public grand opening washeld in 2005.

Volunteer-runToday, the windmill is run

by volunteers under the wingof the forest preserve district.

“Without the volunteers, there is no way we could dowhat we do and have it open tothe public as much as we do,”Cleave said.

Rivecco, like most of themillers, has a full-time job inaddition to the time he spendsvolunteering at the windmill. He said he volunteers to pro-tect the windmill’s rarity.

“It needs people to maintainit otherwise it will fall into dis-repair again,” he said. “Peopleare in awe of it – that such athing can still exist in subur-ban Chicago. Catching thatvibe from people as they comeand visit is the payback.”

KING OF THE CHEESY BEEFKING OF THE CHEESY BEEF

Older individuals sometimes notice spots

and specks floating across their fields of vision,

particularly when looking up at the sky or other

solid-hued backgrounds. While these “floaters”

may initially arouse concern, they are generally

nothing to worry about. These floating thread-like

fragments are actually strands of collagen (a pro-

tein) that commonly occur as a result of shrinkage

of the “vitreous humor” (the gel-like substance

inside the eye). As we age, the vitreous humor

shrinks and the fine collagen fibers it contains be-

come thread-like. Like clouds in the sky, they can

block the light hitting the retina, thereby creating

shadows that we see as floaters. No treatment is

required, but sudden increases or sudden flashes

of light should prompt immediate treatment. P.S.

Floaters most often occur among people between

the ages of 50 and 75, especially in very near-

sighted individuals and cataract patients.

Classroom at Geneva school

becomes mock courtroomBy NICOLE WESEKRNA

[email protected]

GENEVA – A Geneva HighSchool classroom was turnedinto a mock courtroom May21 as students became litiga-tors and testified as witnessesand experts in a mock law-suit that stemmed from a carcrash.

Students were given a sce-nario, and one group arguedon behalf of the defense whilethe other argued on behalf ofthe plaintiff. The two partieswere trying to prove who wasresponsible for a collisionthat resulted in injuries, andthe case was further compli-cated by blood-alcohol read-ings taken after the accident.

The fictional case betweenhigh school students LoganLovell and Pat Sainsbury out-lines a chain of events that re-sults in Lovell breaking sev-eral bones after a crash. Theplaintiff tried to prove thatLovell thought he was beingtailed by a van and – despitebeing in a left turn lane withhis left turn signal on – he de-

cided to make a last-minuteright-hand turn into the po-lice station.

The car collided with thevan driving behind it. Whengiven a Breathalyzer test,Sainsbury blew a 0.05, whileLovell blew a 0.02 while hewas at the hospital, accordingto case documents provided tostudents.

Kim Klein, a criminal de-fense and family law attorney, acted as the judge and ruledon the case following plaintiffand defense arguments. She

ruled in favor of the plaintiff, but said there likely would bea reduction in the award forLovell based on his contribu-tory negligence.

“This would be a toughcall as a judge the way it waspresented,” she said after themock trial concluded.

The case was not as clear-cut as sophomore Madi Ger-mann thought it would be.

“I thought we had it in thebag,” she said after arguingon Sainsbury’s behalf. “I’msurprised we didn’t win.”

Mid-Valley students preparecare packages for soldiers

By ASHLEY [email protected]

ST. CHARLES – Studentsat the Mades-Johnstone Cen-ter in St. Charles didn’t hesi-tate May 17 to tell Kathy To-busch, co-chair of Fox Valley

Troop Support, about their

personal connections to the

nation’s armed forces.

Interrupting a conversa-

tion, one boy told her that his

dad is expected to deploy to

Afghanistan this summer.

Tobusch – who was at the

Mid-Valley Special Education

Cooperative school to talk to

students about care packag-

es for soldiers – promised to

send a package to the boy’sfather.

Tobusch, whose two sonshave deployed to Iraq, said itwas great that the studentsspent weeks collecting itemsfor the soldiers and took timeFriday to package them.

“That shows they reallycare,” she said.

Students spent about a

half-hour selecting suchitems as personal hygieneproducts, flip-flops, moviesand Girl Scout cookies for thesoldiers. As the flat-rate ship-ping boxes filled up, some stu-dents sat on the floor, tryingto make everything fit.

“To me, this is a super im-portant thing,” teacher MegBingham said, handing thestudents more letters to putin their boxes.

The service project showsthem they can serve others, she said, and it teaches themothers are making huge sacri-fices for them.

“They find value in it,”Bingham said.

The Royal Treatment….

Barry and Kay Schrader

We always said when we were ready to retire from work, but not from life, Oak Crest would

be the place for us. Both of us were born and grew up in this area so coming home was

something we talked about for years. When the opportunity presented itself to sell our home

in California and return to our roots, we didn’t have to think twice. We love life at Oak Crest in our wonderful duplex surrounded by

good friends, family and beautiful scenery. We are glad we made the decision to move here while we are both independent. With easy

access to educational programs, events, a state-of-the-art fitness center and delicious meals. We not only feel privileged, but blessed.

We are enjoying all that Oak Crest has to offer. It was our honor to spend the last year as Oak Crest King and Queen. Guess when they

say at Oak Crest you get the royal treatment, they mean it.

Barry & Kay Schrader, Residents since July 2006

Customers won’t go home hungry fromGabby’sBy NICOLE WESKERNA

[email protected]

ST. CHARLES – Whether

it’s for breakfast, lunch or din-

ner, the cooks at Gabby’s Kitch-

en make as many dishes from

scratch as they can, because they

specialize in homestyle cooking.

“We want all shifts to pop,”

said Angelo Sellas, who man-

ages the restaurant with his

brother, John Sellas.

The burgers are fresh and

hand-packed, the soup is home-

made every day, and they bread

their own meats, onion rings

and shrimp, Angelo Sellas said.

One of the more popular en-

trees at Gabby’s Kitchen is the

towering Moo & Oink Burger

– a half-pound burger topped

with slow-braised pulled pork,

applewood smoked bacon and

melted cheddar cheese, topped

with a hefty onion ring. Diners

have plenty of options for side

dishes – 15, to be exact. Aside

from traditional French fries,

they offer sweet potato fries,

tater tots, rice pilaf, creamy

cole slaw and macaroni and

cheese, to name a few.

Chef Justyn Puchalski cooks

up an Iowa Pork Tenderloin

Sandwich – a heaping serving

of breaded pork tenderloin that

hangs over the bun. It is served

in the same fashion as the Moo

& Oink Burger, with a crispy

onion ring topping the bun.

“You’re not gonna go home

hungry,” John Sellas said.

“We’re trying to make some-

thing fresh and homemade,”

Angelo Sellas said. “We stay

away from as much process as

possible.”

Homemade desserts include

Greek yogurt, cobblers and

warm bread pudding. The building where Gabby’s

Kitchen is located, 1650 W. MainSt. in St. Charles, has been inthe Sellas brothers’ family since

1985. They both have workedin the restaurant industry formany years, and Angelo Sellassaid Gabby’s Kitchen is a con-glomeration of their combinedexperience.

They reopened the restau-rant as Gabby’s Kitchen almostthree years ago. Black-and-white photos of the Sellas’ fam-ily members – as well as thefamily members of some of theircustomers – line the walls aboveeach booth.

Also on the walls are colorfulchalkboards displaying specialsthat change monthly or season-ally. They have an omelet of themonth, wings of the month, fishof the month and a burger of themonth.

For families on the go, therestaurant offers carry-out fam-ily packs that feed four or fivepeople. That menu includeschicken Parmesan, south-ern-fried chicken and a chickenand ribs combo.

The restaurant started ca-tering about 1½ years ago, andis flexible as far as customiza-tion goes, Angelo Sellas said. They’ve done parties large andsmall, including weddings andmilitary parties. He said theyrecently catered a party andserved fried chicken and piro-

gies – an example of the broadcatering menu.

On site, Gabby’s Kitchenalso has an outdoor patio, andhosts open-mic nights for allages every Thursday and livemusic entertainment Fridaynights. They also offer a full bar,and their 16-ounce bloody marydrinks, topped with green olivesand a lime, are $4 on Saturdaysand Sundays.

John Sellas said they’re alsoproud of their friendly staff, who have been longtime work-ers there.

“We’re proud of our servers. We’ve got a good staff,” he said.“Our food will speak for itself. We’re serving quality.”

But around mid-May, onequestion in particular sproutsconstantly, from a range ofvisitors to the Wasco Nurs-ery, west of St. Charles, whereProvencher works as the se-nior landscape designer.

“People want to know: Is ittoo late to plant?” Provenchersaid. “It’s the question I getmore than any other this timeof year.

“And the answer is, there’snothing that says to have yourplanting done by Mother’s Dayor June 1 or any date. So manypeople believe it, but you cango all summer long.”

As spring weather haswarmed the air and the soil,it also has heated the desireof amateur home landscapersand gardeners to get outsideand dig in the dirt.

Managers at local gardencenters, including Provencherat Wasco Nursery and JoeHeidgen, co-owner at ShadyHill Gardens in Elburn, saidMay consistently ranks as thebusiest time of the year fortheir greenhouses and nurser-ies.

“When the weather gets

warm like this, I don’t know

how many people might come

through here on a weekend

day,” Provencher said. “Hun-

dreds? Thousands? All I know

is, they just keep streaming on

through here and it’s great.”

Heidgen and Provencher

said many of their customers

are looking to jump on the

trend of “container garden-

ing,” which allows gardeners

to plant flowers or vegetables

in pots and boxes rather than

in the ground.

Heidgen said many of hiscustomers are turning tocontainer gardening to growplants that are relatively easyto grow and save space.

Provencher said perennialgardening also has become in-creasingly popular, and somehomeowners seek floweringplants that blossom year afteryear.

But others seem to have de-veloped a flare for the exotic,Heidgen said, choosing tropi-

cal varieties of plants that cansurvive in northern Illinois’climate only in the summer. He said popular plants include

hibiscus, mandevilla and papy-rus grass.

The gardening centermanagers also noted that last

year’s drought did not seem todiscourage many people fromplanting again this year. Rath-er, it may have produced bettereducated and more determinedgardeners.

“Things that survived thedrought and did well have alsobecome popular,” Heidgensaid.

He said many gardeners, for instance, learned last yearthat if they kept up with water-ing, the heat produced bumpercrops of tomatoes, squash andother backyard fruits and veg-etables.

At the Wasco Nursery re-cently, Brian Wiedenhoeft ofGeneva said he intended toplant annual red and white pe-tunias this year along the frontof his home, as he has for years. He said the planting marks hisonly foray into gardening eachyear.

“It really makes the front

of the house pop, you know?”Wiedenhoeft said.

He said the petunias, whilenoticeably smaller, seemed topull through last summer’sdrought. And that reinforcedhis decision to plant themagain this year.

Others had more ambitiousgardening and landscapingprojects.

Maureen and Ray Zmich ofthe Windings subdivision westof St. Charles said they werein the process of reclaiming aportion of their wooded lot thathad become overrun with inva-sive weeds and shrubs.

The work included clearingthe invasive plants, creatingtrails with mulch and stone, and replanting other, moredesirous flowers and otherplants.

“We were out all morning,”Maureen said. “And we justran out of plants.”

Customers buy plants and other gardening and landscaping materials May 19 at Wasco Nursery, west of St. Charles. Warm, summerlike tem-peratures and sunny skies prompted some area residents to visit local nurseries and garden centers this weekend as the spring planting andgrowing season kicks into high gear.

Know more

Want to know what you can do to succeed at your next gardening proj-

ect? Meagan Provencher of the Wasco Nursery, west of St. Charles, and

Joe Heidgen of the Shady Hill Gardens near Elburn, offer some tips:

• Don’t think it’s too late to plant. Did you run out of time to plant in

May? No worries, Provencher said. “We plant from early spring to Christ-

mas,” she said. “It can be done.”

• Take the time to improve your soil. Heidgen recommended using

compost, peat or other organic material to augment your dirt. He also

recommended changing at least half of the soil in planting containers

annually. “It can be boring, but it’s a lot of the determination in how it’s

going to turn out,” he said.

• Don’t overthink things. Don’t become too consumed with worry about

pests or diseases. “I kill stuff all the time,” Provencher said. “Just take it

and learn from it.”

• Get dirty. There’s no substitute for getting down and working the soil.

• Don’t be afraid to ask for help. “We’re here to answer your questions

and help you achieve your goals,” Provencher said.

SPORTS&RECOlympians offer swimming tips to St. Charles group

By ASHLEY [email protected]

ST. CHARLES – Standingin front of about 80 members of

the St. Charles Swim Team on

May 26, two-time Olympic sil-

ver medalist Christine Magnu-

son told them she started from

similar beginnings.

“Your coaches are probably

better than mine growing up,”

the Tinley Park native said.

Magnuson and fellow

Olympian Adam Brown gave

the young athletes tips in and

out of the pool during a clin-

ic at the St. Charles East High

School campus. They worked

with about 120 swimmers in a

younger age group May 25.

Swim team co-head coach

Jon Cabel said kids need to

hear about sacrifices, strug-

gles and goals, so it’s great

when they get a chance to

learn from an athlete who has

excelled on some level, even if

the athlete participates in an-

other sport.

Magnuson, who earned her

medals at the Beijing Olym-

pics, and Brown, who repre-sented Great Britain in the2008 and 2012 Summer Olym-

pics, said they enjoy leadingsuch clinics.

“It reminds you where youcame from,” Magnuson saidbetween taking pictures withthe teens. “I came from a pro-gram just like theirs.”

Brown said he loves to help

and inspire the next genera-tion of swimmers and to giveback to the sport.

Although he and Magnusonare Olympians, he said, theydon’t do anything special orout of the ordinary. They sim-ply try to perfect the basics, hesaid, adding he feels joy whenhe sees kids focus on what he’strying to teach them.

“They inspire us to workharder in our own training,”Magnuson said.

Fifteen-year-old JohnnyTarpey of St. Charles and17-year-old Taylor Falk ofBatavia said they appreciat-ed the opportunity to learn

new techniques.

“It’s always the little things

that can change your stroke,”

Falk said.

Before entering the pool at

the Norris Recreation Center,

the young swimmers met the

Olympians in East’s gym. Mag-

nuson and Brown shared their

paths to the Olympics and an-

swered questions, which ad-

dressed superstitions, eating

habits and – among other top-

ics – overcoming disappoint-

ment.

Magnuson said failure can

be hard if winning is your only

goal. For her, she said, earning

medals is not the endgame.

“I do it because I love the

sport,” she said.

Brown offered similar ad-

vice. He told the swimmers not

to put too much pressure on

themselves to perform.

“Swimming’s all about hav-

ing fun,” he said.

hen the weather gets dark and gloomy on a

warm afternoon, big storm clouds roll in and

the sky turns an unusual color, there might be

a tornado on the way.

Tornadoes are violent storms that begin in a thun-

derstorm and extend all the way to the ground. They

have strong winds that often (but not always) form a

funnel shape, and can destroy many buildings, cars

and trees in their path.

Tornadoes form when a warm andmoist pocket of

air runs into a cold and dry front. When the twomeet,

they can cause the atmosphere to become unstable.

If strong winds meet this unstable atmosphere, it can

spin the storm into a tube formation, called a funnel

cloud. Once the funnel cloud forms, it can be very

dangerous.

There is normally a warning when a tornado is on

the way. You will often hear a tornado siren in your

town if conditions are right for a tornado to form. If

you are watching TV or listening to the radio, you will

also hear a warning. Tornadoes are also very, very

loud. You will often hear the sound of a tornado com-

ing— like a loud train going by— before you see it.

If a tornado is on the way, you need to move very

quickly to make yourself safe. Here are a few things to

remember:

! Avoid windows. If a window breaks, you want to be

away from the glass.

! Go to the basement: Basements are often the

safest place to be in a tornado. If you don’t have a

basement, get on the lowest floor of the building away

from windows.

! Protect yourself: Get under a heavy table, cover

yourself with a mattress or crouch on the floor with

your head covered in a safe place.

! At school: Follow the drill! Know what the plan is

for a tornado at school. Listen to your teachers’ in-

structions, and keep calm and quiet.

Keep grass look-ing its bestTomaintain a lovely

lawn, the experts atLowe’s offer these tips:

n Most lawns willgrowwell with about 1inch of water a week.Water in the earlymorn-ing, so the sunwill helpdry the grass. Night-timewatering can resultin prolongedmoistureon the blades and canopen the door to dis-ease.

n how do you knowif you’re wateringenough? Try the “soupcan test.” Set an emptycan next to your lawnsprinkler. When there’sabout a half-inch ofwater in the can, it’stime to turn off thesprinkler.

n When you’remow-ing, never cut off morethan one-third of thegrass blade. Leavingthe grass longer en-courages a deeper rootsystem. To better pro-tect your lawn on hills, mow up and downwhenusing a ridingmowerand across when using awalk-behindmower.

n Already dealingwith weeds? Post-emer-gents are a great way topromote grass growthwhile killing activelygrowing weeds on con-tact. Post-emergentswork best when appliedlater in the growingseason - after weeds areestablished but beforethey’ve gone to seed.Read the fertilizer’s labeland strictly follow theapplication instructionsfor best results.

Three years ago, a visionaryproject called the Urban TreeForge almost toppled with thedeath of founder John Metzler. It could have disappeared al-together if not for others whoshared his passion for trees.Today, artist Jason Boone

carries on that vision at UrbanTree, a new name and a new lo-cation in Pittsburgh.“It’s been a lifelong dream to

have a workshop, bring in thewood on one side and the furni-ture comes out the other,” saidBoone.

Lifelong passion

Like many life passions,Boone’s love of woodworkingstarted at an early age, on a farmnear Kansas City, Mo.“My parents were brave

enough to allow me to have afair amount of tools in the ga-rage,” he said, laughing. A youngentrepreneur, he would buy pat-tern books, go around town get-ting orders and return later withthe finished piece.

He said the direction of hislife changed the day Metzlerdied in 2010.“He passed away May 13, and

he had a bunch of jobs waitingto be finished,” said Boone. “Ijumped in and helped finish up.Then in July, I got laid off fromthe architectural firm.”Boone’s dream remained with

the forge, and so did he. How-ever, many of the other artistsdrifted away.“I started up my own com-

pany, buying out pieces of theUrban Tree Forge, even some ofthe wood,” he said.In July, he made the move

from the old location to the newone. It still functions as a co-operative, with five businessessharing the space.Boone’s dream of a “full-cycle”

workshop came closer with the

building of a drying kiln, a keycomponent in creating qualityfurniture.Important to Boone’s vision is

keeping everything local.

The process

The process begins whensomeone calls to donate his rawmaterial.A board member of Tree

Pittsburgh who has participatedin Arbor Aid for five years, heis sensitive to people’s feelingsabout trees and the years theyhave invested in them.“In general, people don’t want

to cut their trees down,” he said.“They come down for reasonsout of their control.”Not concerned with the type

of tree, he is looking for bigones, 30 to 36 inches in diam-eter, that he can slice into slabswith his monster of an Alaskanchain saw.“I get a lot of pin oak, ash trees,

beech and maples along with afew cherry and a few walnuts.”After four to six hours of work,

he ends up with six to eightplanks, which are transportedback to Urban Tree. They arestacked to air-dry in a largeroom in the front end of thewarehouse for a year or two be-fore they go to the drying kiln.Kiln-drying time for wood

varies with the species. Sometake as little as a month, whileothers may take as much as fourmonths.
