Free movie at Peck Farm Orientation Barn

GENEVA — Geneva’s Natural Resources Committee (NRC) invites all ages to get inspired with a free movie at Peck Farm Orientation Barn.

At 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 4, the movies “Green Fire: Aldo Leopold” and a “Land Ethic for Our Time” will be shown.

These movies were chosen to show families how they can do their part in making Earth a better environment.

NRC will also be hosting an Earth Day celebration from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Peck Farm on Saturday, April 20. Items will be available for purchase from the Geneva Green Market, rain barrels will be for sale, bicycle tune-ups offered, free pa-per-shredding, green education, electronic recycling and more.

Screen Free Week gets families to unplug

GENEVA — The Geneva Park District is challenging residents of all ages to go “screen free” for the week of April 29 through May 5.

Families are encouraged to turn off their TVs, video games and other gadgets during Screen Free Week.

The park district will host a variety of activities to keep families active and enjoying time together.

Events are free; registration is required.

County offers up nature series for adults

The Forest Preserve District of Kane County is offering a new, monthly program series for adults looking to meet others interested in nature topics and activities. These free monthly programs will take place at varying forest preserves and each will focus on a different topic or theme.

“In Search of Skunk Cabbage.” The program is from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, April 20, at Big Rock Forest Preserve, at 46W524 Jericho Road, Big Rock.

“Spring amphibians and Reptiles” meets from 6:45 to 9 p.m. May 9 at Creek Bend Nature Center in LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve, 37W370 Dean St., St. Charles.

A nature walk and picnic is set from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Sunday, June 2, at Campton Forest Preserve, 4N379 Town Hall Road, St. Charles.

All programs in “The Nature Network” series are free. Pro-grams are for ages 18 and up.

GENEVA — Today, visitors to Peck Farm Interpretive Cen-ter in Geneva enjoy running and walking along the trails and visiting the historic home, nature center and the butter-fly house. It wasn’t so long ago when the primary occupants of the land were sheep.

There were lots of sheep.Visitors will have a chance

to view life of days long ago with the Geneva Park District’s introduction of Heritage Day at Peck Farm Park, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 6. Vis-itors will have an opportunity to witness firsthand activities such as sheep herding, cow milking, candle dipping, butter making and more.

The Heritage Day is an opportunity to celebrate the farm’s history and create a win-dow into activities of the past. Traci Wicks, director of mar-keting and public relations for the Geneva Park District, said visitors will be able to see wool spinning, basket weaving and even play lawn games.

“The sheep herding is a big draw,” Wicks said, adding the first demonstration will be at 11:30 a.m. and continue at 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Peck Farm Park is located at 4038 Kaneville Road. Admis-sion is free.

The Peck family occupied the land starting in 1844 after receiving the homestead deed, according to historical records cited by Dilip Das in his article “Preserving the Past and fu-ture at Peck Farm in Geneva,” which appeared in the May/June 2000 edition of Illinois Parks and Recreation.

Das is former manager of Natural Areas and Interpreta-tion for the Geneva Park Dis-trict. He was hired to open the Peck Farm Interpretive Center,

helping to set up the facilities.“I had a great experience,”

said Das, who is now an admin-istrator at the University of Michigan.

As part of his work, Das met with members of the Peck family, including the grandson of the original settles, to learn more about the land’s history.

“I had a lot of fun digging into the history and discover-ing some of the back story,” Das said.

The original settlers includ-ed Eli and Jerusha Peck, who left Vermont and brought their family to Geneva. The pioneers raised merino sheep, known for their soft wool. According to Das’ research, the farm once supported more than 2,000 me-rino sheep.

After years of success, the Peck family farm began to de-cline, first after the introduc-tion of synthetic materials and then the effects of the Great Depression, according to Das. Through the years, the family split up, and portions of the land were sold, but descendants of the original settles continued to live and work on the land.

In the late 1980s, George and Erdene Peck saw their home-town become a hub of growth

and development with shop-ping malls and subdivisions.

“They were pretty far-sight-ed,” Das said. “They didn’t want to see their farm turn into another housing develop-ment.”

The Pecks sold 131 acres of their farm land, including the historic properties, to the Gene-va Park District.

“They definitely sold for a lot less than they would have gotten from a developer,” Das said.

The Geneva Park District’s mission was to preserve the land, keeping a portion as prai-rie and keeping the historic home on the land. It has made some developments to the land, building trails, an observation silo and the popular butterfly house. The butterfly house, which celebrates its 10th an-niversary this summer, opens in May. Last year, there were more than 20,000 visitors to the butterfly house, Wicks said.

This year, the park district will begin work on an addition to the park, an outdoor educa-tion center designed to give children an interactive learn-ing experience. Trish Burns, manager for the Peck Farm In-terpretive Center, said the out-door education center will pro-vide a way for children to get out and, in some cases, get their hands dirty, as they explore.

Construction on the outdoor education center is slated to be-gin this spring, and the new fea-ture should open by fall, Wicks said.

The Peck Farm Park is open year-round. Throughout the year, visitors enjoy the trails, and in the warmer weather, it becomes the site of a number of activities, from special events to summer camp programs for children. Wicks said it has even become a wedding destination.

“It’s a very beautiful loca-tion,” she said.

Artist gives simple medium the spotlight at Geneva studio

GENEVA — Andria Bur-chett has won numerous local and regional awards over the years for her colored pencil drawings.

Burchett has a background in fashion merchandising but since 1990 has been concen-trating on her colored pencil and graphite creations. Now, the 58-year-old Geneva resi-dent is passing on the love for the medium through teaching drawing and colored pencil classes at Beech Tree Studio, 2219 Kings Court, Geneva.

Demand for her classes has grown so much that she recently opened a second studio in Wheaton.

Reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk with Burchett about the growth of her business and her love of pencil drawing.

What do you like about the me-dium of colored pencil drawing?

It’s been kind of an up-and-coming medium in the last 10 years. It’s gotten a lot of re-spect in the world of fine arts.

There are so many tech-niques you can use in colored pencil. You can get a lot of different effects.

It is a very slow and tedious medium. That’s why it is fun to do it with other artists.

It’s fun to be around other people who are in the same medium. You get inspired by what someone next to you is doing.

What do you think people see in colored pencil drawings?

I think people are sur-prised when they look at colored pencil work. Some people don’t realize what beautiful rich colors and textures you can get.

What is your favorite subject matter?

I’ve been doing portraits

since I started doing this 22 years ago. I have always loved faces. There is always a story behind them.

It’s almost like reading a book. You get to imagine the story behind the face. You get

to step inside their life a little bit and understand them.

I understand you just opened a second studio.

We have been fortunate to have such a great response. We have had waiting lists for our classes, which is a happy problem to have. But

we want to accommodate everyone who wants to take our classes.

GENEVA — The parents of 16 children who live in the Batavia Highlands subdivi-sion and attend Williams-burg Elementary School have vowed to fight a recommen-dation that their children be transferred to Western Ave-nue School.

Batavia Highlands is in the city of Batavia but within Ge-neva School District 304. The subdivision is bounded on the north by East Fabyan Parkway and on the west by Route 25 at the northern edge of Batavia.

“The neighbors are all up in arms about it,” said Erica Herrington, whose 8-year-old daughter is in third grade at Williamsburg. “We just can’t see what advantage it serves. Educationally and socially, it’s going to impact them.”

Angie Morrison, mother of a second-grader, also blasted the district’s boundary task force for focusing on their sub-division and excluding other neighborhoods. Morrison said the task force had, at first, fo-cused on four neighborhoods, including Mill Creek students and an area in Geneva’s his-toric district, then it was down

to two neighborhoods and 60 children to be moved.

“Now they’re taking every-one off the table ... the only kids they’re talking about moving are 16 kids from Bat-avia Highlands,” Morrison said. “You can’t tell me they’re trying to ‘balance’ attendance at schools. Sixteen kids is not balancing squat.”

Morrison said five years ago, Batavia Highlands par-ents successfully stopped an-other planned school move. But school board member Mary Stith, who served on the boundary task force, said moving the Batavia High-

lands students is a recommen-dation the school board is ex-pected to act on at its April 22 meeting.

“There is nothing set in stone,” Stith said.

Stith said the task force looked at balancing enroll-ment and efficiencies and held four forums to allow public input. Other neigh-borhoods were removed from consideration because mov-ing them would not balance enrollment or add transpor-tation efficiencies.

Moving Batavia High-lands’ 16 children, Stith said, creates efficiencies in busing

costs and in having children attend schools closer to their neighborhoods. Western Av-enue, she said, is closer than Williamsburg.

“They have been moved three times,” Stith said of Batavia Highlands children. “We are not targeting them. Five years ago, they fought it, and the board did not support it [the boundary change], and that is fine.”

But Stith said five years later, the board is looking at population bubbles, redefin-ing neighborhoods and creat-ing efficiencies in transpor-tation.

• Allen D. Murrell, 26, of the 700 block of Westfield Course, Geneva, was charged Sunday, March 24, with assault. According to police reports, Murrell yelled into someone’s face, so they feared a battery was about to take place.

• Joseph A. Pec, 36, of the 600 block of South River Street, Aurora, was charged Monday, March 25, with disorderly conduct.

• Timothy R. Spears, 43, of the 700 block of Church Street, Batavia, was charged Monday, March 25, with possession of more than 2.5 grams but less than 10 grams of marijuana. Spears was also charged with improper use of a vehicle registration and operating a vehicle when the registration is expired.

• Tabu H. Knight, 25, of the 8100 block of Chestnut Drive, Palos Hills, was charged Sunday, March 24, with possession of 1.5 grams of marijuana.

• A window at the Mill Race Inn, 4 E. State St., was reported vandalized Sunday, March 24.

• Richard M. Osburn, 62, of the 1700 block of South Fourth Place, St. Charles, was charged Friday, March 29, with driving under the influence, driving with a blood alcohol level greater than .08 percent, driving without insurance and failure to give information after striking property with his vehicle. According to a crash export, Osburn hit a light pole on the 600 block of South Third Street, 50 feet north of Route 31.

ST. CHARLES — At House of Tokyo in St. Charles, it’s all about location.

Whether hand-picking a meal at the floating sushi river, pounding “sake bombs” atop the bar or watching a tep-pan chef cook right before their eyes, cus-tomers are drawn back to the restaurant again and again — as evidenced by walls filled with Polaroid photos of loyal cus-tomers celebrating birthdays, anniversa-ries and other special occasions.

Amanda Bassett, manager and head waitress at House of Tokyo, said some of the customers who were pictured as chil-dren now pay visits as adults.

“With the regulars, we’re really good at knowing what they want,” she said. “They don’t even have to ask, and [the chef] is already making it.”

House of Tokyo, unique to St. Charles, has been located at 2762 E. Main St. for 12 years. Bassett said menu favorites vary depending on where customers choose to sit.

At the sushi bar area, customers can sit in front of a moving river of water with boats that slowly float past each seat at the bar. If something looks good, custom-ers can just grab one of the small, covered plates of sushi as it sails on by. Anyone unfamiliar with sushi can reference the picture menus scattered along the bar.

For customers with a big appetite, House of Tokyo offers an all-you-can-eat sushi buffet special, which means un-limited sushi for $23.95. The special runs from Sunday through Thursday for those who dine after 4 p.m.

Everything is made fresh each morn-ing, Bassett said. Among the most popu-lar sushi selections include the regular or deep-fried California roll, which con-tains crab and avocado; the tiger roll, which contains cream cheese, shrimp tempura and avocado; and the red dragon roll, which contains eel, tuna and a spicy sauce.

Popular selections of nigiri sushi, or raw fish that sits on top of rice rather than being rolled up, include the spicy crab and spicy shrimp, Bassett said.

On the other side of the restaurant, parties of up to 11 people can watch as a chef makes their food at a hibachi grill

built right into each table.Bassett said her favorite meal from the

hibachi grill is the filet mignon served with the restaurant’s homemade teriya-ki sauce. Another favorite is the Tokyo shrimp, a dish where the shrimp come coated in a butter garlic sauce.

And what of the aforementioned “sake bombs?” Consumed by balancing a shot of sake liquor over a glass of Japanese beer using chop sticks, customers enthusiasti-cally pound the table until the sake falls into the glass, turning a simple beverage into a celebratory experience.

Bassett said the restaurant attracts a lot of couples celebrating anniversaries, as well as families celebrating birthdays. She said the food, combined with excellent service, keeps customers coming back.

And if a customer can’t find the right dish, Bassett said the chef can usually whip up some made-to-order sushi.

“If we have the ingredients, we will make it,” she said.

GENEVA – The Kane Coun-ty Cougars, in conjunction with the Chicago Cubs, have announced the team’s prelim-inary Opening Day roster.

The incoming group of 26 players will be reduced to a Midwest League-mandated squad of 25 before the Thurs-day, April 4 season opener at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark against the Quad Cities River Bandits. The Cougars’ roster includes seven of the top 30 Cubs organizational pros-pects according to Baseball America, and several key components of last season’s

Short-A Boise squad that advanced to the Northwest League Championship Series last fall.

Cougars manager Mark Johnson begins his coach-ing career at Kane County after managing at Boise for the past two seasons. He will be accompanied by pitching coach Ron Villone and hit-ting coach Tom Beyers.

The infield will open the season with , the Cubs’ sec-ond round pick in 2011, is Kane County-bound. Dan Vogelbach, a second-round pick in 2011, was ranked the Cubs’ seventh-best prospect by Baseball America and the best power hitter. Vogelbach

Third baseman Jeimer Candelario (ranked eighth) was the youngest regular in the Northwest League last season and bat-ted .281 with 6 home runs and 47 RBI for Boise as an 18-year old. Middle infielder Gioskar Amaya (ranked 21st) led the Northwest League with 12 triples last season and topped NWL second basemen with a .968 fielding percentage. Mar-co Hernandez (ranked 20th) split last season between Class-A Peoria and Boise, batting .286 with at Boise in 67 games.

The Cougars’ pitching corps features right-hander Pierce Johnson, the 43rd overall selection in last June’s draft and the sixth-best prospect in the Cubs organization. Jose Arias, another right-handed start-er, posted a 3.25 ERA in 13 starts at Boise last season. Right-handed pitcher Tayler Scott, a native of South Af-rica, made 15 starts at Boise last season, going 5-1 with a 2.52 ERA. Lendy Castillo, a right-handed pitcher who converted from an infielder, appeared in 13 games at the big league level with the Cubs last season. Castillo (ranked 28th) was acquired by the

Cubs from Philadelphia in the December 2011 Rule 5 draft.

With pitchers Michael Heesch and Nathan Dorris on the preliminary roster, the Cougars have fielded at least one Illinois-born player for each of the past five Opening Day rosters. Heesch was born in Crystal Lake and graduat-ed from Prairie Ridge. The left-hander made 12 relief ap-pearances at Boise last sea-son and posted a 2.66 ERA. Dorris, another southpaw, was born in Carbondale and attended Southern Illinois. Dorris made 9 appearances out of Boise’s bullpen last sea-son, twirling a 1.93 ERA.

Martial arts blend life skills with cool tricksBy SHERRI DAUSKURDAS

A decade ago, Ke Roth was like any suburban Mom, tak-ing her son off to taekwondo classes. But when she tired of waiting on the sidelines with a book in hand, and joined her teenage son on the floor, her life took a dramatic turn.

Now, she’s a black belt, a martial arts instructor and operator at Initial TKD Mar-tial Arts, 1305 S. River St. in Batavia.

“We focus on children be-tween the ages of 3 and 14, but we have several parents who participate as well,” Roth said. “We have a program that is designed specifically for 3-7 year olds, which is fo-cused on the development of the big muscles groups, eye-hand coordination, balance and basic socialization skills. It’s not martial arts per se, but uses martial arts skills and games to help teach these fundamentals to students who are going into their first school settings.

Initial TKD offers a 6-10 year-old class for those students who have a little more physical and social development, and does teach martial arts.

“Because we are dealing with younger students, it’s low key, friendly, and again, oriented toward having fun and playing games rather than hard-core martial arts - but it also stresses the ba-sics of respect, honor, integ-rity and honesty, as well as helping children with getting more physical activity in their lives.”

In older age groups,it’s more competitive

“Again, we work on the black belt attributes of appro-priate social behavior (hon-or, integrity, loyalty, self-con-trol, respect, perseverance) but we also work on some of the other skills they will need in life such as setting goals.”

For many parents, its the psychological aspect of mar-tial arts that offers the most benefit, building confidence, instilling discipline, and learning control.

“Many parents enroll

their children in martial arts because they are con-cerned with bullying issues, though the people who could really benefit from studying martial arts are the bullies — they need to learn how to be confident in themselves, not through harming those around them,” Roth said, “while others think that mar-tial arts can help their chil-dren with poor grades and poor attitudes. And it can —the discipline you learn can be applied to everything, as can the confidence you gain.

“Other people enroll their children because they see it on TV and in the movies, and it looks cool to be able to throw the high kicks and strong blocks — and it is.” But Roth, contends, it’s really much more.

“We teach the integrity — and along the way, you learn to break boards,” Roth said. “We teach honor, and while we’re doing that, you learn reverse side kicks. We teach respect, and while on that journey, you get to learn punches and blocks.”

R o t h a d d e d t h a t s h e doesn’t consider martial arts a sport.

“It’s a physical activity, yes, and we do having some sport-like activities — but unlike other sports, there is nothing that prevents ev-eryone from winning,” she said. “You can achieve what-ever you decide you want to achieve; in martial arts, the only one standing in your way of getting what you want is you. Every student who is willing to do the work can be a black belt.”

At World Martial Arts Academy USA in Geneva, the last eight months have been a growing experience. With a curriculum based in Sho-tokan karate, the academy opened in August 2012 at 316 Anderson Blvd., in Geneva.

Shotokan Karate is a Japanese martial art that involves striking with the hands and feet, said chief instructor and grandmaster Ramon Ribay, a 10th degree blackbelt with more than 50 years of experience.

Programs are offered for all age groups — a Lil’ War-riors program for 4-7 year olds, a youth program for 8-13 year olds, and an adult pro-gram for ages 14 and up. All groups are taught age appro-priate martial arts skills.

“For Lil’ Warriors, we emphasize listening skills, balance, and coordination,” he said. “For youth, we em-phasize self-discipline and respect as we work on the 3 K’s of karate — Kihon, the basics; Kata, or forms; and Kumite, which is spar-ring.” Finally with teens and adults, the training is more rigorous, with an em-

phasis on correct execution of technique and as well as proper application, he added.

“At about one year into our program, we begin in-troducing students to Filipi-no martial arts, known for weaponry and hand-to-hand combat,” he said. “After two years into our program, we introduced the techniques of Aikido, a Japanese martial art that focuses on blending and redirecting the force of your opponent, using throws and joint locks.”

Ribay said most people come for martial arts train-ing in order to learn how to defend themselves and to de-velop self-discipline.

“A martial artist is seen as someone who is a highly dis-ciplined individual, skilled in physically defending him or herself,” he said. “Parents also correctly cite the devel-opment of self-confidence as a reason for enrolling their children.

But Ribay attests martial arts training directly or indi-rectly addresses many of the issues facing people today in-cluding: obesity, low level of activity/fitness, low self-es-

teem, lack of self-discipline or focus, poor attitude and behavior.

“Martial arts is not about learning how to beat up peo-ple. It’s about self-improve-ment and becoming the best individual you can be,” he said. “After all is said and done, martial arts training is fun.”

On a separate piece of paper, write a haiku about an object, a place or a feeling. On the top line, write the title of the poem. 3. Keep a journalSit down every day and write in your journal for at least 10 minutes. Write about every-

thing that comes into your head. At the end of the 10 minutes, pick out your favorite phrases and write them into poem form.

mix them up in a hat, then pick them out one at a time. Write them down in poem form in the order you pull

them out.
