GENEVA – After disastrous-ly plummeting into a rocky areawhile cliff-diving in Hawaii,Jake Lannert felt excruciatingpain and accompanying de-spair.

Lannert at the time was ascholarship cheerleader at Ha-waii Pacific University, a plumdesignation he had to surren-der once he shattered his heelduring the accident, after whichhe was told he might not be ableto walk again.

But Lannert, a Class of 2002Geneva graduate, wasn’t readyto surrender his unlikely pas-sion. Drawing on the samepluck that made him the firstmale cheerleader in GenevaHigh history (to his knowledge),he rehabilitated from the acci-dent and re-engaged in the sport,now serving as a head coach forthe Allstar Rebels cheerleadingprogram in Geneva.

That seemed an unlikely tra-jectory in the aftermath of theaccident in Hawaii. Lannertsaid he and some friends werediving off a 50-foot cliff but hislanding spot only had about afoot of water.

“Both of my ankles were thesize of grapefruits in like 2 min-utes,” Lannert said. “Obviouslyimmediately with body shock,it just turns into like a humancast around your ankles. Andthat’s another reason I becameinterested in physical therapybecause of all the healing pro-cess that my body took.”

In addition to his role withAllstar Rebels, Lannert is ageriatric therapist with Bow-es In-Home Care, based in FoxRiver Grove. His physical ther-apy savvy also proves usefulwith Allstar Rebels consideringcheerleaders often must over-come injuries.

While his four-days-a-weekcommitment with Allstar Reb-els no longer is Lannert’s pri-mary source of income, cheer-leading remains a focal point inhis life.

He had no expectation he’dbe sucked in for the long haulwhen he tried out to be a cheer-leader his sophomore year atGeneva. Somewhat of a con-trarian, Lannert said he decid-ed to be the school’s first malecheerleader at the urging of afriend because it was “randomand new,” not to mention the

social perks.“I was like, ‘These girls

are way more attractive thanweights in the weight room,’ ”Lannert said. “I was like ‘I canlift these girls all the time, that’snot a problem.’ ”

Lannert also swam duringhigh school but acknowledgedit took considerably moregumption to wade into thecheerleading waters. He stillvividly recalls his nerves ontryout day.

“I had to walk into the guys’locker room and be like ‘Al-right, you wanted to do this, youwanted to do this. OK, let’s godo this.’ “

After his sophomore yearat Geneva, Lannert shiftedhis focus to competitive cheerprograms in Gurnee and later

Naperville. He kept his cheer-leading stunt skills sharp whilebeginning his college years atNorthern Illinois – where heeventually returned to earn hisdegree – and a tape sent to Ha-waii-Pacific landed him a cheerscholarship, which regrettablylasted only about six months be-cause of his injury.

Lannert said he was at“rock bottom” upon returninghome to be around his supportnetwork while he recovered.Linking up with Allstar Reb-els eights years ago helped re-invigorate him. Allstar Rebelsrelocated to Geneva about twoyears ago after previously beinghoused in South Elgin and St.Charles.

Allstar Rebels director MattParaday praised Lannert’s at-

tention to detail and resilientnature as among the reasonshe’s been a quality, long-termfit.

“He can motivate because heobviously loves the sport,” Par-aday said. “He likes workingwith the kids and he genuinelyhas a passion for it, and that’sreally how you motivate people.If you’re really not into it, it’snot going to translate when youtell a kid, ‘Hey, I want you towork harder.’ ”

Geneva resident Rylee Oli-ver, 13, is among Lannert’s pu-pils with his level-4 “Gangsters”squad. Oliver said Lannert“pushes us to our limits” butdoes so in patient, understand-ing fashion.

“I had a mental block for ayear and a half, and he helped

me get over that,” Oliver said.“It was where I was too afraid totumble, and I got over my fearwith him. He helped me withthat.”

After eight years with All-star Rebels – located at 1000 Ran-dall Road in Geneva – Lannert,now an Elgin resident, said heremains enthused about mento-ring up-and-coming cheerlead-ers.

“Girls need as much confi-dence as they can get,” Lannertsaid. “They live in a world ofmagazines and billboards say-ing they’re never good enoughfor anything. Whenever theycome here, I like to thinkthey’re good enough to makesure they’re progressing theway they need to and they feelgood about themselves whenev-er they leave.”

And while Lannert said he’snot currently coaching anymale cheerleaders, a few havegone through the programin the past, which naturallystrikes a chord.

“Absolutely,” Lannert said.“You’re always rooting forthem.”

“Eye melanoma,” also known as “ocularmelanoma,” occurs when the cells thatproduce pigment in the eye become cancerous,much in the same way that they can in the skin(skin melanoma). While this form of canceris rare, it is the most common eye cancer inadults. It usually occurs in the middle of thethree layers of the eye, the “uvea,” which ispositioned between the outermost “sclera” andthe innermost “retina.” Because this type ofcancer is not visible when looking in the mirrorand does not cause symptoms, it is usuallydetected as a result of a comprehensive eyeexamination. Diagnosis begins with a dilatedeye exam by an ophthalmologist that oftenleads to ultrasound examination.

Kansas company hired toupdate Batavia’s website

BATAVIA – City officialswant to make Batavia’s web-site more attractive and easierto use.

The city is looking to ap-prove a contract with Kan-sas-based CivicPlus to designand host its website. As pro-posed, the contract would notexceed $36,000.

Howard Chason, the city’sinformation systems director,told aldermen at the Commit-tee of the Whole meeting Dec.9 that the current website wasdesigned by the city’s informa-tion systems department andthat it is more than nine yearsold. The site was last updatedfive years ago.

“Technology changes suchas the use of tablets and mobilecomputing – coupled with lim-ited staff time – has us lookingto outsource the site’s designand hosting to CivicPlus,”Chason told aldermen.

Chason said the website isin need of a facelift, includingimproving the navigation ofthe site and its design. In July,city officials asked companies

to submit proposals for de-signing and hosting Batavia’swebsite. The city received 16proposals and narrowed thelist to six.

The six companies gave apresentation and demonstra-tion in front of a committee ofcity employees. The commit-tee narrowed the list to threecandidates, who were broughtin for a second demonstra-tion. The committee thenunanimously chose CivicPlusas the best company to designand host the city’s website.

According to Chason, Civ-icPlus has more than 1,700government clients, includ-ing the cities of Geneva andElgin.

“I really do like that theseguys have so much municipalexperience,” 7th Ward Alder-man Drew McFadden said.

“Technology changessuch as the use of tabletsand mobile computing– coupled with limited

staff time – hasus looking to outsourcethe site’s design andhosting to CivicPlus.”

Geneva appoints Tymoszenko aseconomic development director

GENEVA – Cathleen Ty-moszenko has been named thehead of Geneva’s EconomicDevelopment Department, re-placing Ellen Divita, who re-signed in October after sevenyears, officials said in an an-nouncement Dec. 15.

The Economic Develop-ment Department providesretention, recruitment andtraining resources to attractand help businesses grow. Italso coordinates special eventpermits, promotes tourismand communicates with thecity’s business community.

Tymoszenko was directorof community developmentfor West Dundee since 2005.There, she created and over-

saw the department, whichwas not only responsible foreconomic development butalso planning, zoning, historicpreservation, building permitsand code enforcement.

She also negotiated devel-opment approvals for newlyannexed commercial, indus-trial and residential areas, ac-cording to the announcement.

While there, Tymoszenkospearheaded an effort to insti-tute a tax increment financedistrict securing a large-scalecommercial redevelopmentand completed a new compre-hensive plan for the village.

After graduating from De-Paul University, Tymoszenkobegan her career as directorof tourism for Schiller Park in

ST. CHARLES – A St.Charles city committee on Dec.15 heard a review of the city’slatest financial monthly results.

Julie Herr, the city’s assis-tant finance director, presenteddata for the month of Octoberto the Government OperationsCommittee. October marks thesixth month in the city’s cur-rent fiscal year, which beganMay 1.

Herr’s presentation con-tained a summary for each ofthe city’s four main operationfunds – general, electric, waterand wastewater.

Monday’s presentation andsubsequent discussion focused

on the general fund, which ac-counts for the majority of cityoperations. The city’s largestgeneral fund revenue stream,sale and use tax, is trending 6.3percent above the prior year todate and trending 1.7 percentabove budget for the year, Herrsaid.

Alcohol tax revenue is com-ing in ahead of the prior fiscalyear’s results by 5 percent, aswell as the budget by 1.2 per-cent. Hotel tax revenues andelectric franchise fees, whileshowing increases over prioryear-to-date results, are expect-ed to come in under budget by1.3 percent and 2.5 percent, re-spectively, the written Octoberreport states.

Telecommunication tax rev-

enues and state income tax dis-bursements are below budgetpredictions and the prior yearresults, according to the report.Herr said she was not sure whythe income tax figures werelower than the previous year,but the telecommunication rev-enues are likely lower becauseof people using their mobilephones to call long-distancenumbers as opposed to theirlandlines.

“On a positive note, it’sgood to see the sales tax aboveprojections,” said Bill Turner,committee chair and a Ward 3alderman.

The city’s next quarterly pre-sentation in 2015 will includesale and use tax revenues fromthe current holiday season.

St. Charles resident Linda Brodine hasplenty of stories to tell.

Brodine has published a second book,“Gramma, Please Tell Us More Stories!,”the sequel to her first book, “Gramma,Please Tell Us A Story!” Both books areavailable at Brodine’s website, www.quilt-stories.com, Town House Books inSt. Charles and Prairie Shop Quilts inBatavia, among other locations.

Kane County Chronicle reporter EricSchelkopf had the chance to talk to Bro-dine about her new book.

Eric Schelkopf: So, does the book title kind ofsum up the book?

Linda Brodine: It is a continuation of thetype of stories from “Gramma, PleaseTell Us A Story!” Between the two books,there are 13 unique stories altogether,either featuring my children or mygrandchildren.

We raised our children out in thecountry in Utica, so most of the storiesI write have to do with nature and thewide open spaces. It just is a little bit of adifferent lifestyle than children who growup in town, or in the city.

It was really wonderful. A lot of times,you don’t really appreciate your sur-roundings. As time went on, we realizedthat we sort of lived this magical, wonder-ful life out in the country.

Schelkopf: So, these stories are based onwhen you lived in Utica?

Brodine: Well, not all of them. Some ofthem are, and others are based on theexperiences of my grandchildren.

Most of my stories are based on theexperiences of my children and grand-children, and some of their requests forstories about things like dinosaurs. Ican’t have really lived through that time,but I sure can tell stories about it.

We’re working on a third book,“Grandpa, Please Tell Us A Story.” Thatwill be based on some of my husband’sexperiences growing up. When you’re anauthor, once you start, you get new ideasall the time, and they take on a life oftheir own.

I just feel very blessed, to have beenable to tell 13 stories so far, and thenhopefully some more in the future.

Schelkopf: So, the titles of the books, “Gram-

ma, Please Tell Us A Story!” and “Gramma, PleaseTell Us More Stories!” are quite literal?

Brodine: They are. They are totallyliteral. That’s how it all started.

I’m pushing my grandkids on a swing,singing them swinging songs and tellingthem fairy tales. They wanted somethingdifferent, so I expanded on that and start-ed making things up.

From there, I started rememberingmore experiences that my own childrenhad and then I started developing storiesfrom the ideas that my grandchildrenpresented to me. I have nine grandkids,and each one of them is so unique and sodifferent.

So, there are plenty of ideas to goaround when you’re around them. I justkind of developed ideas from them, a lotof times without them even knowing it.

My daughter, Jennifer, is my editor.And I trust her tremendously.

She’s excellent with punctuation and

idea development. She never wants tochange the ideas in the story, but shedefinitely wants all of it to make sense.

She looks at it from the perspective ofa general, independent reader. Then shelooks at it as a parent reading to a child.She has three children of her own.

Then she tries to see it from a child’sperspective. So, it’s very helpful to haveher do that for me. We’re a great team.

Schelkopf: And you also incorporate your lovefor quilting in the books. I understand you createda themed quilt for each of the 13 stories, and havecreated quilts that you showcase at quilt and craftfairs and at presentations.

Brodine: Each quilt actually does tellthe story. So, when I go to a school orlibrary, I can tell the story from the quilt.

The kids get such a huge kick out ofit, because it’s a combination of the threearts – the writing, the illustrations andthen the quilting.

Minerality in a wine is like lickinga wet rock in a creek on a hot summerday.

That was the best definition I’d everheard to describe minerality in a wineat a tasting last year in Chicago. La JotaVineyards Howell Mountain CabernetSauvignon is the first wine since thetasting that I found to be laced with anabundance of mineral notes.

Winemaker spotlightFor the first time in three years Cal-

ifornia winemakers have experiencedseveral rain storms this fall and winter.While the rain events need to contin-ue just to put a dent into the severedrought conditions, Carpenter will havethe chance to once again experience apart of nature he finds prevalent in LaJota wines.

“That [minerality] is true acrossall of our mountain vineyards,” saidCarpenter who cold soaks the mustafter a light crush to help fix the colorand complexity and allow for a touch ofcarbonic maceration to impart a charac-teristic he associated with wines fromBeaujolais.

“The kind of minerality we experi-ence in old world wines is typically afleeting proposition here in California,but not in the Napa mountains. Thereis that evaporating water on wet rockafter a rain storm minerality that per-vades these wines that I have come totreasure,” he said.

Working high above the Napa Valleyfloor, on steep hillsides and isolatedamongst statuesque trees, Carpenterfinds peace and lots of work. A singleone-acre block of soil in the vineyardcan range from volcanic ash rivers toold sedimentary, iron-laden clays tosolids high in conifer biomass, whichproduce varied growth patterns andmake vineyard management an intenseproject.

Howell Mountain also has one of thecoolest micro climates in all of NapaValley, which in wetter years, like thisone is shaping up to be, test a winemak-er’s mettle. Harvest becomes a gameof chicken with Mother Nature, as thewait for perfect ripeness could come

perilously close to a rain storm.But, armed with 30-pound boxes for

hand harvested fruit, workers scale thesteep slopes and the payoff is a winelike La Jota Howell Mountain Caber-net Sauvignon, 2011 ($75). The wine isa masterpiece. Long-lasting flavors ofblackberry, star anise, thyme and sagenotes sail on. But, they aren’t bombasticwhen it comes to ripeness. Framed bythe minerality of which Carpenter is sofond, the mouth feel and depth of flavorsand seamless layers provided an experi-ence I will long remember.

“If you can deal with the challenges,you can produce what I believe aresome of the most distinctive, concen-trated and textural wines in Napa,”Carpenter said. He added that the fruitfor the 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon washarvested just before a major rainstorm on Nov. 11, 2011.

Even though Howell Mountain has ahistory that dates back to 1888, Car-penter compared its potential to a rockband that got its start in the 1990s.

“We pressed the merlot that willultimately [go] into our high-end LaJota W.S. Keyes merlot on Monday,” hesaid. “Normally I am hesitant to anointa wine as great until at least a year haspassed. But tasting that wine as it cameoff the press today was thrilling. It waslike hearing Pearl Jam for the first timein the ’90s and thinking to myself, ‘Wowthis band is incredible, and they areonly going to get better and better.’”

What to buyAdam Lee wants everyone to come to

the party. The owner and winemaker ofSiduri and Novy Family Wines took toTwitter after the Napa Valley earth-quake in September. He urged followersto buy a Napa Valley wine to supportthose effected by the quake.

It was a classy move. So, as Lee cele-brates Siduri’s 20th anniversary at hisSanta Rosa winery, I recommend buy-ing a Siduri this weekend, which arewell distributed and should be found atyour local wine shop.

Eric Schelkopf: Great talking to you again.The last time I talked to youwas in 2009, whenyouwere part of theMegaWinterfest with Kel-lie Pickler at theMega Center at Pheasant RunResort in St. Charles. Of course, you are comingback to townwith your own Christmas showand your new Christmas album, “ONE Christmas– Chapter 1.” How long have you been thinkingaboutmaking this album?

LeAnn Rimes: It actually kind of cameabout very quickly last year. The lastChristmas album I made was 10 yearsago, so I was thinking, “Hey, it’s kindof time.”

I didn’t want it to be another 10years before I was able to record an-other Christmas record. I decided thatI wanted to stretch it out for the nextthree years.

I selfishly did it, too, because Ireally, really love Christmas. I loveall these songs, obviously. We haven’teven gotten to what we will be puttingon the second EP.

Schelkopf:Was it hard choosing the songsfor this album? How did you go about doingthat?

Rimes: Not really. Honestly, these arethe first ones that popped out to me.I knew I wanted to record “I Want AHippopotamus for Christmas.” It’s myabsolute favorite Christmas song. It’sso fun.

It was fun to play around with songsthat I’ve heard or listened to my wholelife. A lot of it is just me and a coupleof instruments. And I think there’ssomething very sweet about that.

With “Blue Christmas,” I thinkwe really brought out the sadness ofit. It runs the gambit of emotions thatChristmas can conjure up for many dif-ferent people. It can be a very differentChristmas, depending on what your

situation is.

Schelkopf: During the Arcada show, are youalso going to be doing songs from throughoutyour career?

Rimes: I’ve done Christmas toursbefore where it is kind of half andhalf, my music and Christmas music.Between the last Christmas record and– now – this EP, it definitely lends itselffor a full show. We do two of my songs.Other than that, it’s really all holidaymusic.

Schelkopf: Are you going to do “Blue?”Rimes: We do “Blue Christmas” into

“Blue.” It had to happen.

Schelkopf: At age 14, you became theyoungest person to receive a Grammy Award.How do you think yourmusic has evolved sincethen?

Rimes: I’ve evolved, just from a littlegirl into a woman, going throughmajor life changes. I think all of thataffects my music. I think I’m a lot lessfearful of what I say and what I diveinto as a songwriter. I definitely openmyself up more than I ever have, andI think that’s where my best musiccomes from.

Schelkopf:What do you think of today’scountrymusic scene? Are there artists, countryor otherwise, who you respect?

Rimes: You know, it definitely haschanged. I feel like there was a muchbroader spectrum and a lot more wom-en in country music back in the ’90s. Itwas definitely an easier place to breakinto. But I love Miranda Lambert. Ithink she is probably my favorite as faras country artists go.

She is willing to take risks andwrite true stories. The country artists Igrew up on, they were these real artistswriting about what they were living.You got a real connection, and theywere very heartfelt stories and songs.

I feel like we have lost a lot of that.So, it’s nice to see someone like Miran-da who actually does that.

DeKALB – Ryan Brownversed himself in whirlwindseven in the earliest stages ofhis Northern Illinois footballcareer.

Nearly five years ago, asa high school senior, Brownvisited campus as a footballrecruit before rushing hometo play in a St. Charles Northboys basketball game.

NIU’s Mid-American Con-ference rival, Western Michi-gan, also coveted Brown then,wanting the lanky, 6-foot-6offensive line prospect tograyshirt. He ultimately red-shirted as a preferred walk-on with the Huskies, but nomatter the color that precedesBrown’s name, he sees every-thing accompanying his finalcollegiate game clearly.

“It’s crazy, you know. Itseems like just yesterday,I was leaving North,” saidBrown, who’ll start at righttackle in next week’s Boca Ra-ton Bowl against Marshall onDec. 23. “You know, time real-ly does fly when you’re here. Itseems long when you do it, butwhen you look back, it was ashort time, so it’s crazy.”

Brown briefly entered re-flection mode after NIU beatBowling Green for the MACtitle earlier this month, the fi-nal touches on an 11-2 regularseason that triggered the Hus-kies’ seventh consecutive bowlappearance.

He remembered shufflingalong the line as a tackle onboth sides before settling in asthe starter at right tackle forall 13 games this season, gain-ing a deep understanding offootball along the way.

He recalled meeting up withhis older brother, Patrick, thena Miami Dolphins offensivelineman, when NIU made itslandmark trip to the OrangeBowl on New Year’s Day 2013.

Some of Brown’s conscious-

ness was even populated bythoughts of those who dedi-cated their sweat equity butnever had the chance to playbeyond a regular season fina-le. Family friend Peter Nelson,a former offensive lineman atNorth and San Diego State, im-mediately came to mind.

“We’ve been very blessed,put in this great position, to havea lot of success here,” Brownsaid. “A lot of programs don’thave that, you know. I knowpeople that go to programs forfive years and never play in achampionship game, never playin a bowl game. … I’ve just gotto take that as it’s really great.”

Brown left North with a rep-utation as a soft-spoken big manin both his varsity sports, albeitone who consistently made animprint whenever he played.

Standing in a hallway out-side the Huskies’ indoor Ches-sick Practice Center after arecent workout, Brown spokewith the same calm tones.Although this wasn’t one ofthose instances, he’s exhibiteda penchant for pumping up the

volume through the years.“He’s very talkative. He’s

evolved. He’s grown up a lotthat way, and I’ve been withhim from the start,” Huskies of-fensive line coach Joe Tripodisaid. “I wouldn’t call him a shyguy around his guys, you know.

“All of us, you get us in ourroom, there’s no shyness. Out-side, some of the bigger guys

are a little quiet. But, yeah, he’sa great leader. Not afraid tocall people out. He’s not afraidto get after some of the youngguys, as well as the older guys.”

NIU started the same offen-sive line combination through-out the regular season, thankslargely to left tackle Tyler Loos’return to health after recentspates with various injuries.

Brown shuffled around theline as a result while gradu-ally bulking up. He weighedabout 255 pounds on the day hevisited NIU in early 2010 andsince has grown to around 300.Brown credits the persistentprograms of Huskies strengthand conditioning coach BradOhrt as well as a healthy in-take of protein shakes for help-ing him maintain his bulk.

Huskies center Andrew Nesscan attest to the plight of one ofhis best friends on the team.

“ ... we all have troublekeeping weight on, so we alltry and eat as much as possibleand see if we can out eat eachother,” Ness said.

No matter his measure-ments, Brown figures to reg-ister as a sizable luminary onone of his potential stops nextsummer. He’s heard Northfootball coach Rob Pomazak,who was not with the programwhen Brown’s prep careerended, would like him to speakwith players.

There’s lots of time betweennow and then – could Brownwind up in an NFL trainingcamp like his brother, who’snow out of football? – butBrown has no trouble keepingan open mind. His thoughtsaren’t completely flooded withNIU flashbacks.

“We’ll see what happens,you know. I’m just trying to fo-cus on this game, and if it hap-pens, it happens,” Brown said.“If it doesn’t, I’ve been lucky toplay here, [be around for] fivechampionship games and gotto go to five bowl games. So Ihave no regrets at all.”
