GNK Dinamo Zagreb, commonly referred to as DinamoZagreb
(pronounced [dinamo zreb]), or by their nicknameModri ("The Blues")
are a Croatian football club based inZagreb. They play their home
matches at StadionMaksimir. They are the most successful club in
Croatianfootball, having won fifteen Croatian championship
titles, twelve Croatian Cups and four Croatian Supercups. Theclub
has spent its entire existence in top flight, having beenmembers of
the Yugoslav First League from 1946 to 1991,and then the Croatian
First League since its foundation in1992.
Dinamo Zagreb were founded on 9 June 1945 in order toreplace the
three very popular Zagreb football clubs(HA#K, Gra!anski and
Concordia) which had beendisbanded following the end of World War
II. Dinamoentered the Yugoslav First League in its inaugural
194647season, finishing as runners-up. In their second season
inYugoslav top flight in 194748 they finished as Yugoslavchampions
which was their first major trophy. The clubwon three more league
titles and seven Yugoslav Cupsbefore they left the Yugoslav league
in 1991 amid thebreakup of Yugoslavia and formation of the
Croatianfootball league system. Dinamo are also the only
Croatianclub with European silverware, having won the
196667Inter-Cities Fairs Cup by defeating Leeds United in thefinal.
They also finished runners-up in the samecompetition in 1963 when
they lost to Valencia.
Until the early 1990s its foundation year was considered tobe
1945 but amid political turmoil during the breakup ofYugoslavia the
club began claiming direct lineage to pre-WWII clubs Gra!anski
Zagreb and HA#K. In order toreflect this in June 1991 it was
renamed HA!KGra"anski, which lasted until February 1993 when it
wasrenamed Croatia Zagreb. They won five league titles
andparticipated in the 199899 and 19992000 UEFAChampions League
group stages carrying that name beforereverting to Dinamo Zagreb in
February 2000. Althoughthe subject was dropped for a while, in 2011
clubmanagement increasingly began claiming that Dinamo is the
direct descendant of Gra!anski (which hadoriginally been founded in
1911 and disbanded in 1945) and in April that year decided to
append the adjective"Gra!anski" to the club's official name,
turning it into the present-day GNK Dinamo Zagreb
(Gra!anskinogometni klub Dinamo Zagreb or "Dinamo Zagreb Citizens'
Football Club").

In the immediate aftermath of World War II the three most
successful Zagreb-based clubs (HA#K, Gra!anskiand Concordia) were
all disbanded by a decree issued by the communist authorities in
May 1945. In order toreplace them, a new sports society called FD
Dinamo (Croatian: Fiskulturno dru#tvo Dinamo) was founded on 9June
1945. The new club inherited Gra!anski's colors and fan base, with
most of Gra!anski's players continuingtheir careers at Dinamo. In
the first few years the club played their home matches at
Gra!anski's old groundStadion Kotura$ka, but soon moved to former
HA#K's old ground at Stadion Maksimir. In addition, formermanager
of Gra!anski Mrton Bukovi was appointed as Dinamo's first manager.
The most notable Gra!anskiplayers who joined Dinamo upon its
formation were August Le$nik, Mirko Kokotovi" and Franjo Wlfl. Of
theHA#K players that joined Dinamo, the regulars in the first team
soon became Ratko Kacian, %eljko &ajkovski,Svetozar Peri'i" and

Dinamo finished in second place, 5 points behind champions
Partizan. Dinamo won their firstsilverware in the 194748 season,
finishing firstplaced in the Yugoslav championship with 5 points

the twolegged final. Dinamo lateradded three more cup titles (in
1960, 1963 and 1965) and two championship wins (in 195354 and
195758). Inaddition, they were also cup runnersup on three
occasions (in 1950, 1964 and 1966). Dinamo first enteredEuropean
competitions in the preliminary round of the 195859 European Cup,
but were knocked out by theCzechoslovak side Dukla Prague. The club
then had some success in the 196061 European Cup Winners' Cup,as
they managed to reach the semi-finals where they lost to Italian
side Fiorentina. They have also competed inthe 196162 Inter-Cities
Fairs Cup, but failed to progress beyond the second round in which
they were knockedout by Barcelona. However, in the 196263

lost41 on aggregate to Spanish side Valencia. The campaign included
a sensational win against European giantsBayern Munich in the
quarter-finals of the competition. In the 196364 European Cup

Three Yugoslav clubs went on to participate in the 196667
Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, but they were knockedout early in
thecompetition, excluding Dinamo who went on to become the
firstever Yugoslavian team that won a European competition. In
thefirst round Dinamo played against Spartak Brno and after
theaggregate score was 22, coin was flipped in order to
determinethe winner. Dinamo was through to the second round, where
theywere drawn against Scottish side Dunfermline. For the first
time inthe history of the cup the away goals rule were introduced,
whichhelped Dinamo to qualify for the third round after the
aggregate score was 44 (20 at home and 24 away). Ontheir road to
finals they defeated Romanian side Dinamo Pite)ti, Italian
powerhouse Juventus and German sideEintracht Frankfurt. In the
finals the club was draw to play its first match at Maksimir
against Leeds United.Dinamo won 20 in front of the 33 thousand fans
with Marijan &er'ek and Krasnodar Rora scoring, which wasenough
to secure the title as the match at Elland Road finished 00.[6]
PostEuropean success era (19672000)Dinamo closed the successful
sixties with Yugoslav Cup title in the 1969 and quarterfinals of
the 196970 CupWinners' Cup competition. Unfortunately, the success
didn't follow the club to the new decade, as they failed towin a
single trophy throughout the 1970s. The club participated in three
more seasons of Inter-Cities Fairs Cupbefore it was replaced with
UEFA Cup, but failed to make any impact. Dinamo took part of the
initial UEFACup season, but lost in the second round of the
competition to Rapid Vienna on away goals rule. The clubentered the
UEFA Cup on seven more occasions (in 1976, 1977, 1979, 1988, 1989,
1990 and 1992) but neverrepeated success from the sixties. Finally,
at the start of the 1980s, Dinamo won their sixth Yugoslav Cup
title, defeating Red Star Belgrade 21 on aggregate result. They
qualified for the 198081 Cup Winners' Cup, but lostalready in first
round to Benfica. In 1982 Dinamo sealed their fourth Yugoslav
championship. In 1983 they wontheir seventh Yugoslav Cup which was
the club's last trophy in the SFR Yugoslavia. After Benfica,

Portuguese club sealed Dinamo's European season, this time in
198283 European Cup when they lost toSporting CP. They played in
198384 Cup Winners' Cup season and were eliminated, again, by
Portuguese sidePorto. The club didn't have any success in the
second part of the 1980s, except two consecutive secondplaces
inYugoslavian championship in 1989 and 1990.
1990s and the Croatia Zagreb eraAfter the SFR Yugoslavia was
dissolved, Dinamo took part in creating the Croatian Football
League and theinitial season was played in 1992. The same year club
controversially changed its name to HA!K Gra"anski, and another name
change followed in 1993, when the club was renamed to Croatia
Zagreb. The name changewas widely seen as a political move by the
leadership of then newly independent Croatia, with the goal
ofdistancing the club from its Communist past. As the name change
was also never accepted by their supporters, the club renamed
themselves back to Dinamo on 14 February 2000. As Croatia Zagreb,
the club has won sixCroatian championships, of which five were won
in a row from 1996 to 2000. Zvonimir Boban, Davor #uker. They've
also won four Croatian Cup titles.[7]
In the late 1990s, the club played two consecutive seasons in
the UEFA Champions League group stage. In the199899 season, they
were drawn in a group with Ajax, Olympiacos and Porto. After
disappointingperformances in the first three matches in which they
managed to draw against Ajax at home and lost their awaymatches
against Olympiacos and Porto, they performed well in the remaining
three matches, beating Porto athome and Ajax away, and drawing to
Olympiacos at home. However, they failed to advance to the
quarterfinalsas a secondplaced team behind Olympiacos. In the
19992000 season, they were drawn in a group withdefending champions
Manchester United, Marseille and Sturm Graz, but managed only a
fourthplace finish inthe group with two draws and one win. They
most notably held Manchester United to a goalless draw at
OldTrafford in their opening Champions League match that season.
The club also competed in two consecutiveseasons of UEFA Cup. In
1996 they were knockedout in the second round, while in the 1998
they managed toreach the third round, but lost to Atltico Madrid 21
on aggregate score. Dra(en Ladi", Dario #imi",

The club subsequently participated five times in the third
qualifying round of the Champions League, in 2000,2003, 2006, 2007
and 2008. However, they played against Milan, Dynamo Kyiv, Arsenal,
Werder Bremen,Shakhtar Donetsk and failed to win a single match,
losing 61 on aggregate to Milan, 51 on aggregate toDynamo Kiev,
Shakhtar Donetsk and Arsenal and 53 on aggregate to Werder Bremen.
Since the qualifyingrounds format changed, Dinamo was unable to get
through to the playoff round, losing 32 on aggregate to FCRed Bull
Salzburg in 2009. Before the UEFA Cup group stage phase was
introduced, Dinamo's best success inthe competition was reaching
the second round of the competition on three occasions. They were
able to reachthe group stages in 200405, 200708 and 200809, but
failed to secure qualification to round of 32. UEFA thenintroduced
Europa League competition which had slightly changed format
compared to that of the UEFA Cup.Dinamo was able to qualify for the
group stage of the initial 200910 Europa League season, after
beatingScottish side Hearts 42 on aggregate. In domestic
competitions the club was able to secure five league titles andwon
the Croatian Cup on six occasions. They have also won four Croatian
Supercups. The club has alsoproduced many footballing talents that
represented Croatia on the international level in the 2000s. The
mostnotable are Luka Modri", Eduardo, Vedran *orluka, Niko Kranj'ar
and Tomislav Butina. Dinamo once againqualified for the Europa
League in 20102011 finishing third in group D behind PAOK

thus failed to qualify for the next stage. Dinamo managed to reach
the group stage of theChampions League in 2011 after beating Nefti
PFC Baku (30 at home, 00 away), HJK Helsinki (21 away,10 at home)
and Malm FF (41 at home, lost 20 away). They were drawn in group D
alongside Real Madrid,Olympique Lyonnais and AFC Ajax. Dinamo
finished last in the group stage, with a -19 goal difference and
22goals conceded, which makes this the worst performance ever in
Champions League history. They lost bothmatches against all teams -
Real Madrid (0-1 at home, 6-2 away), Lyon (1-7 at home, 2-0 away)
and Ajax (0-2 athome, 4-0 away). The only highlight of the campaign
being two late consolation goals in the final match of thegroup at
the Santiago Bernabu Stadium, the only goals Real Madrid conceded
in that group. The followingseason, Dinamo once again managed to
qualify for the Champions League group stage after defeating
PFCLudogorets Razgrad, Sheriff Tiraspol and NK Maribor. They were
drawn in group A alongside FC Porto,Dynamo Kyiv and Paris Saint
Germain. They failed to reach the next stage after recording 1
point and a -13 goaldifference with their best result a 1-1 draw

officially openedon 5 May 1912 and hasbeen reconstructedseveral
times since then.[9] The seats were installed on the east and

stands were pulled down. Newly built north stand hasa capacity of
10,965 and also has business offices. The whole stadium was
reconstructed just before the opening

The spectators are placed on four stands: north, east, west and
south. All of them are exclusively all-seaters, andthere are no
standing places on the stadium. The total capacity is 30,459
The final phase of the reconstruction includes lowering the lawn
and making a stand around the pitch and overthe running track with
an annex to the south stand, adding an extra 16,000 seats to the
maximum capacity. Thiswill make Stadion Maksimir an exclusively
football stadium with approximately 60,000 seats and thus the
clubwill be given opportunity to host final matches of European
club championships.[9]
The start of the planned reconstruction works were anticipated
in 2008, with completion deadlines set as early as2010, but works
never got started. Renovation finally began in the summer of
2011.[10] By now, the city ofZagreb has reportedly spent around
+100 million on maintenance of the stadium.[11] The stadium became
ahuge problem for the city council who are planning a referendum
where the citizens of Zagreb would decidewhether to continue with
the reconstruction of Stadion Maksimir, or to build the brand new
StadionKajzerica.[12] In the summer of 2011, the stadium underwent
some much-needed renovations. All the seats werereplaced with new
ones. The running-track was covered with blue cloth. The pitch was
renewed.

SupportersAlthough the club had supporters throughout the
history, its firstorganized group of followers emerged in 1986. The
most faithful andeager followers established the group Bad Blue
Boys (often abbreviatedBBB). As legend has it, the name was
inspired by the 1983 film BadBoys starring Sean Penn in the main
role.[13] The group aroused a greatinterest and BBB branches
started appearing in all parts of Zagreb. Thefans soon started
organizing departures to visiting matches themselves tovoice their
support for the club.[13]
On 17 March 1986, the first official fan club Bad Blue Boys
wasfounded.[13] Since its formation, the Bad Blue Boys
traditionally situate

on the north stand of Stadion Maksimir.[14] During the Croatian
War of Independence the fans offered theirsupport to Franjo Tu!man,
Zlatko Canjuga and the conservative right-wing HDZ in Croatia's
first elections[15]and a lot of them were also the soldiers of
Croatian Army or in the police forces who participated in the
war.[13]The monument Shrine to the Croatia Knights was built below
the west stand of Stadion Maksimir to honour allof Dinamo fans who
have died on the battle fields.[13]
The BBB are often accused for hooliganism,[16][17][18][19] which
resulted in both UEFA and Croatian FootballFederation disciplinary
bodies penalizing Dinamo on several occasions.[20][21][22] These
incidents are caused byminor number of hooligans who are constantly
accused for causing material damage, fights with police
forces, flare throwing and racism.[17][19][21][23][24] Despite all
those incidents, the BBB are praised among the other fansfor their
constant and loud support during Dinamo's matches.[23]
From 11 August 2010 the Bad Blue Boys were boycotting the club's
matches due to their dissent with the club'sboard. The boycott
ended on 30 August 2011, but remained active for the UEFA Champions
League matchesthat season.
