MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL
"It can happen. It does happen. But it can't happen if you
quit." Lauren Dane.
We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then is not an act, but
a habit. Aristotle
It gives me immense pleasure to pen a few words for our
e-bulletin. At the onset I would like to thank the last years
editors and congratulate the newly selected editors for the current
year.
Our first consideration is always in the best interest of the
students. Our goal is to promote academic excellence and continuous
improvement.
I believe that excellence in education is aided by creating a
learning environment in which all learners are supported in
maximizing their potential and talents. Education needs to focus on
personalized learning and instruction, while promoting an education
system that is impartial, universally accessible, and meeting the
needs of all students.
It is of paramount importance that our learners have sufficient
motivation and encouragement in order to achieve their aims. We are
all very proud of you, our students, and your accomplishments and
look forward to watching as you put your mark on the profession in
the years ahead.
The call of the time is to progress, not merely to move ahead.
Our progressive Management is looking forward and wants our
Institute to flourish as a Post Graduate Institute of Excellence.
Steps are taken in this direction and fruits of these efforts will
be received by our students in the near future. Our Teachers are
committed and dedicated for the development of the institution by
imparting their knowledge and play the role of facilitator as well
as role model to our students.
The Pharmacy profession is thriving with a multitude of
possibilities, opportunities and positive challenges. At Guru Nanak
Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, our focus is on
holistic needs of our students.
I am confident that the students of GNIPST will recognize all
the possibilities, take full advantage of the opportunities and
meet the challenges with purpose and determination.
Excellence in Education is not a final destination, it is a
continuous walk. I welcome you to join us on this path.
My best wishes to all.

HISTORICAL ARTICLE The American Pharmaceutical Association: Need
for better intercommunication among pharmacists; standards for
education and apprenticeship; and quality control of imported
drugs, led to calling of a convention of representative pharmacists
in the Hall of the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, October 6 to
8, 1852. Under leadership of its first President, Daniel B. Smith,
and first Secretary, William Procter, Jr., the twenty delegates
launched The American Pharmaceutical Association; mapped its
objectives; and opened membership to "All pharmaceutists and
druggists" of good character who subscribed to its Constitution and
to its Code of Ethics. The Association continues to serve Pharmacy
today. NEWS UPDATE
Excess sitting linked to coronary artery calcification, an early
indicator of heart problems: (05th March, 2015) Sitting for many
hours per day is associated with increased coronary artery
calcification, a marker of subclinical heart disease that can
increase the risk of a heart attack, according to research.
Coronary artery disease is the most common type of heart disease
and the leading cause of death in the United States.
How healthy is genetically modified soybean oil? : (05th March,
2015) Soybean oil accounts for more than 90 percent of all the seed
oil production in the United States. Genetically modified soybean

made from seeds of GM soybean plants, was recently introduced
into the food supply on the premise that it is healthier than
conventional soybean oil. But is that premise true? Just barely,
say scientists.
Gut microbial mix relates to stages of blood sugar control:
(05th March, 2015) The composition of intestinal bacteria and other
micro-organisms -- called the gut microbiota -- changes over time
in unhealthy ways in black men who are prediabetic, a new study
finds.
Oxytocin nasal spray causes men to eat fewer calories: (05th
March, 2015) A synthetic nasal formulation of the hormone oxytocin
reduced caloric intake in healthy men, particularly consumption of
fatty foods, after a single treatment, a new study finds. The
results confirm those of animal studies showing oxytocin reduces
food intake.
Abnormal brain rhythms tied to problems with thinking in
schizophrenia: (05th March, 2015) By studying specially bred mice
with specific developmental and cognitive traits resembling those
seen in schizophrenia, researchers have provided new evidence that
abnormal rhythmic activity in particular brain cells contributes to
problems with learning, attention, and decision-making in
individuals with that disorder.
Drug to control appetite could also fight anxiety: (05th March,
2015) Did you know that our body produces its own marijuana-like
compound to protect us against anxiety? A study reveals a new
biological pathway that regulates this system and suggests that a
drug currently in clinical trials to treat obesity might also
provide an attractive way to combat anxiety disorders.

In vivo CRISPR-Cas9 screen sheds light on cancer metastasis,
tumor evolution: (05th March, 2015) For the first time, CRISPR-Cas9
gene-editing technology has been employed in a whole organism model
to systematically target every gene in the genome. A team of
scientists has pioneered the use of this technology to 'knock out,'
or turn off, all genes across the genome systematically in an
animal model of cancer, revealing genes involved in tumor evolution
and metastasis and paving the way for similar studies in other cell
types and diseases.
Twin copies of gene pair up in embryonic stem cells at critical
moment in differentiation: (05th March, 2015)The two alleles of
Oct4, a gene important in embryonic stem cells, don't remain
separate in the nucleus of stem cells but rather pair up, at the
developmental point at which stem cells begin their maturation into
specific cell types, scientists have discovered.
Autistic features linked to prenatal exposure to commonly found
fire retardants, phthalates: (05th March, 2015) Exposure during
pregnancy to a combination of fire retardant chemicals and
phthalate chemicals -- both present in the average home -- can
contribute to autistic-like behaviors in the offspring, according
to an animal study.
Exposure to endocrine disruptors during pregnancy affects the

KNOWLEDGE BASED ARTICLE Protein's pivotal role in heart failure
discovered Researchers at the University of California, San Diego
School of Medicine have identified a key piece in the complex
molecular puzzle underlying heart failure -- a serious and
sometimes life-threatening disorder affecting more than 5 million
Americans. In a study published in the March 5th online issue
ofCell Reports, Xiang-Dong Fu, PhD, and colleagues explored the
heart's progression from initial weakening to heart failure, and
found that a protein, known as RBFox2, plays a critical role in
this process. Contrary to its name, heart failure does not mean the
heart completely stops working, but rather that the heart muscle
becomes weakened to the point that it can no longer pump enough
blood for the body's needs. Coronary artery disease, high blood
pressure and heart defects are among various factors that can lead
to heart failure, which has no cure and is currently treated with
medications, lifestyle changes, oxygen and cardiac devices. In some
cases, a heart transplant is required. Fu and his team studied the
cellular changes that occur during the weakened heart muscle's
transition from working harder to maintain proper blood flow, known
as the compensatory stage, to failing to sustain adequate blood
supplies, known as decompensation. "Numerous signaling molecules
have been shown to be part of the compensatory program, but
relatively little was known about the transition to decompensation
that leads to heart failure," said Fu. To answer this question, the
research team explored RBFox2, a gene splicing protein known to be
involved in the heart's early development and ongoing function. "We
wanted to know how

RBFox2 might contribute to decompensation, given its vital role
in heart functions,'' said Fu. In their studies, the researchers
restricted blood flow in mice to induce a condition similar to
heart failure and then tested their RBFox2 protein levels over a
period of weeks. "Strikingly, we found that RBfox2 protein was
largely diminished in the hearts of live mice five weeks after the
procedure," he said. Fu and colleagues also tested the reduction of
the RBFox2 protein in mice specially-engineered to lack the
protein. In these experiments, the mice lacking the RBFox 2 protein
developed heart failure symptoms similar to those in the
blood-restricted mice, suggesting a functional connection between
the reduction of RBFox2 and decline of the heart muscle. The
research team then sought to determine why, from a mechanistic
point of view, the loss of RBFox2 would weaken the heart. To study
this, they examined RBFox2-controlled changes in gene expression,
which refers to the biological actions taken by genes, during
various scenarios of heart development in mice. Specifically, the
scientists compared changes detected in the hearts of
RBFox2-deleted or blood-restricted mice to those that occur during
post-natal heart "remodeling." Remodeling is the process of heart
strengthening that begins at birth and continues throughout
childhood. "The RBFox2 deletion-induced genetic changes are similar
to those that occurred during blood restriction-induced heart
failure, but opposite to those taking place during heart
remodeling," said Fu. "This indicates that the normal developmental
program for strengthening heart performance is reversed during
heart failure." Fu said the finding could lead to new drug targets
for heart failure. "We've learned that the RBFox2 protein is very
important in keeping the heart muscle strong," he said. "Our
research shows its diminished expression coincides with the
weakening of the heart muscle. This strongly suggests a causal role
for this protein in heart failure. By understanding these
mechanisms, we may be able

to find a way to prevent the decreased expression of RBFox2,
which may help in preventing heart failure."
