MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL
" It can happen. It does happen.
But it can't happen if you quit ." Lauren Dane.
‘We are what we repeatedly do.
Excellence then is not an act, but a habit .’ Aristotle
It gives me immense pleasure to pen a few words for our e-bulletin. At the onset I would like to thank tlast year’s editors and congratulate the newly selected editors for the current year.
Our first consideration is always in the best interest of the students. Our goal is to promote academexcellence and continuous improvement.
I believe that excellence in education is aided by creating a learning environment in which all learners asupported in maximizing their potential and talents. Education needs to focus on personalized learni
and instruction, while promoting an education system that is impartial, universally accessible, and meeti
the needs of all students.
It is of paramount importance that our learners have sufficient motivation and encouragement in order achieve their aims. We are all very proud of you, our students, and your accomplishments and loo
forward to watching as you put your mark on the profession in the years ahead.
The call of the time is to progress, not merely to move ahead. Our progressive Management is looki
forward and wants our Institute to flourish as a Post Graduate Institute of Excellence. Steps are taken
this direction and fruits of these efforts will be received by our students in the near future. Our Teache
are committed and dedicated for the development of the institution by imparting their knowledge and pl
the role of facilitator as well as role model to our students.
The Pharmacy profession is thriving with a multitude of possibilities, opportunities and positi
challenges. At Guru Nanak Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, our focus is on holist
needs of our students.
I am confident that the students of GNIPST will recognize all the possibilities, take full advantage of t
opportunities and meet the challenges with purpose and determination.
Excellence in Education is not a final destination, it is a continuous walk. I welcome you to join us
this path.
My best wishes to all.

HISTORICAL ARTICLE
Caventou, Pelletier and Quinne:Taking their cue from Sertürner's alkaloidal experiments, twoFrench pharmacists, Messrs. Pierre-Joseph Pelletier and Joseph-Bienaimé Caventou, isolated emetine from ipecacuanha in 1817;strychnine and brucine from nux vomica in 1818; then, in theirlaboratory in the back of a Parisian apothecary shop, they tackledthe problem that had baffled scientists for decades - wresting thesecrets of the Peruvian barks that were so useful against malaria. In1820 Caventou and Pelletier announced the methods for separationof quinine and cinchonine from the cinchona barks; prepared puresalts, had them tested clinically, and set up manufacturingfacilities. Many other discoveries came from their pharmacy-laboratory; high honors were accorded them.

CRISPR genome editing with the introduction of a few keychemical compounds. This has important potential implicationsfor correcting disease-causing genetic mutations.
Microbiome linked to type 1 diabetes: Shift in
microbiome species diversity prior to disease
onset: (5th February, 2015)In the largest longitudinal study of the microbiome to date,
researchers have identified a connection between changes in gutmicrobiota and the onset of type 1 diabetes. The study, whichfollowed infants who were genetically predisposed to thecondition, found that onset for those who developed the diseasewas preceded by a drop in microbial diversity -- including adisproportional decrease in the number of species known topromote health in the gut.
Spontaneous cure of rare immune disease: (5th

Gene confirms existence of psoriatic arthritisPsoriatic arthritis is a type of inflammatory arthritis that will
develop in up to 30 percent of people who have the chronic skincondition psoriasis. Psoriatic arthritis is said to bea seronegative spondyloarthropathyand therefore occurs morecommonly in patients with tissue type HLA-B27. Psoriatic arthritisor PsA causes pain and stiffness in joints and tendons that can leadto joint damage. Nearly all patients with PsA also have skinpsoriasis and, in many cases, the skin disease is present before thearthritis develops. However, only one third of patients withpsoriasis will go on to develop PsA.
The researchers, who are part of a European consortium, say thattheir work, which took three years to complete and is published inNature Communications, is a breakthrough because geneticchanges have been identified that increase the risk of PsA but notpsoriasis.Until recently opinion was divided as to whether psoriaticarthritis was a disease in its own right, or psoriasis combined withrheumatoid arthritis.
The findings could, in future, lead to the identification of peoplewith psoriasis who are at risk of developing psoriatic arthritis.Dr John Bowes, who led the analysis of the work, said: "Our studyis beginning to reveal key insights into the genetics of PsA thatexplain fundamental differences between psoriasis and PsA. Ourfindings also highlight that CD8+ cells are likely to be the keydrivers of inflammation in PsA. This will help us to focus on howthe genetic changes act in those immune cells to cause disease."The gene identified by the research team lies on chromosome 5 andis not the first PsA-specific gene to be identified. Patients whocarry the HLA-B27 gene are also more likely to develop PsA.Professor Anne Barton, a rheumatologist and senior author on thestudy explained: "By identifying genes that predispose people toPsA but not psoriasis, we hope in the future to be able to testpatients with psoriasis to find those at high risk of developing PsA.

Excitingly, it raises the possibility of introducing treatments toprevent the development of PsA in those individuals in the future."Dr Stephen Simpson, director of research at Arthritis Research UKadded:" This is a significant finding. Not only does it help establish
PsA as a condition in its own right, but it could have majorimplications in the way that patients with this condition aretreated and lead to the development of drugs specificallydeveloped for PsA, which are greatly needed."The research was funded by the National Institute for HealthResearch Manchester Musculoskeletal Biomedical Research Unit.
