The Metro Detroit market is located in Southeast Michigan centered around the city of Detroit and ranks as the 12th most populated MSA in the United States, with a population of 4,296,250.

Metro Detroit has made Michigan’s economy a leader in information technology and advanced manu-facturing with over 70,000 employees in the automotive industry. Home of the “Big Three” American automakers (General Motors, Chrysler and Ford), Detroit is the world’s traditional automotive center and a key pillar of the U.S. economy.

Metro Detroit is one of twelve U.S. metropolitan areas to have professional teams from the four major North American sports. The Detroit Lions, Detroit Red Wings and Detroit Tigers are located within the Detroit Central Business District while the Detroit Pistons are located in the northern suburb of Auburn Hills.

About 15.9 million people visit Metro Detroit annually, spend-ing an estimated $4.8 billion. Metro Detroit contains a number of shopping malls, including the upscale Somerset Collection in Troy, Twelve Oaks in Novi and the Great Lakes Crossing outlet mall in Auburn Hills, with all three being major draws for tourists. Somerset Collection is among the top 10 mall properties in the United States. Other notable street-side shopping districts include the downtown areas of Birmingham, Royal Oak and Northville.

Nicknamed the “Motor City” Detroit is the center of the Automotive Industry, and the regions entertainment hub.

An estimated 80,500 people work in downtown Detroit, making up one-fifth of the city’s employment base. Detroit fares well as a fortune 500 headquarters with companies such as General Motors, DTE Energy; Quicken Loans, and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan who recently relocated its headquarters as well as 4,000 employees to downtown Detroit.

In 2011, “Forbes Magazine called Detroit one of the best places for business as the city continues to attract top companies.” Downtown Detroit has increased its role as an enter-tainment hub in the 21st century fueled by three casino resort ho-tels, three professional sports stadiums, four performing arts theaters, a revitalized riverfront, state of the art cruise ship dock, and a new river walk have spurred economic development in downtown Detroit.
