In 1794 Elizabeth married William Seton, and they were very happy. William worked with his father in the family shipping business. Elizabeth stayed home with their babies. She loved to play the piano and sing with them, while William would play the violin
to make the toddlers bounce and dance.

Meanwhile, William’s shipping business was failing. Barbary pirates from Africa attacked the Seton ships as they sailed from Italy. Then the war between Napoleon’s France and Great Britain caught the United States in the middle—and there was no US Navy to
protect American ships from being captured by both sides.

In 1808 Archbishop John Carroll invited Elizabeth to come to Baltimore to start a school. Later, she founded a new religious congregation for women called the Sisters of Charity on donated land in Emmitsburg, MD, in St Joseph’s Valley.
The sisters’ first years were joyful, though they had little to eat and snow blew through the drafty bedroom windows.
