-TV, Channel 6, out of Richmond, Virginia, re-cently celebrated its 70th year of broadcasting. On Sunday, April 22, 1948, they became the South’s first television station, de-fined as such because they were located south of the Mason-Dixon line. This particular station was one of only 16 stations throughout the United States, and they were noted as be-ing the eighth station to be granted a broadcast license.

I remember well when we got our first television in 1952. It was a Motorola floor model with doors that opened to view a 21-inch screen that provided black and white programming. Of course that was a few years before they offered color television, but it was amazing to see characters in “real life” that you had only seen in comic books or heard on the radio. The early programs were mostly westerns. Circle 4 Ranch was amongst the first on Channel 4 out of Washington, D.C. As years progressed, we had Hopalong Cassidy and the Lone Ranger. A few years later came American Bandstand and The Mickey Mouse Club (the original with Annette Funicello).

However, before all of these programs ever existed, there was a troop of young performers right here in King George County. They performed all over this area during the early 1940s. They frequented such places as the Shiloh Community League, The Elks Hall, New Hope School in southern Stafford, and even on WFVA radio in Freder-icksburg, Virginia. The Radio show was a weekly event every Saturday morning, and it showcased the local talent of this group of young children. This little group of enter-tainers was under the guidance, care, and supervision of Mrs. Mary Burnley Owens. They had a real catchy name and were know as the King George Kiddie Klub.

Their performances were during a very critical period of time in our nation’s history. Our nation was involved in a second World War. There were hard times because many items, such as fuel, rubber, and sugar, were rationed in order to support the war effort. Rationing was just one more obstacle to overcome, but Mrs. Owens was always there front and center with her KG Kiddie Klub. To get from place to place she arranged to carpool and somehow, someway she was able to support this endeavor, and the children were able to share good times and fond memories in the face of adversity.

Back in those days, the Dahlgren Naval Proving Ground established a rail line from Fredericksburg to Dahlgren to move equipment and ordnance in for testing. Sometime

around 1938, the U.S. Navy bought a Model 21 railcar from Edwards Car Company in North Carolina to transport base employees from along the connecting railroad to the base. During the war, the capacity was increased with the purchase of a combine car from AC&F in St. Louis. It served to transport workers along the way to Dahlgren during those tough times. Just across from Wal-Mart, located at Ferry Farms to the north side of the tracks, there was a stop to pick up pas-sengers going to King George and ultimately to Dahlgren. On a number of occasions, Mrs. Owens uti-lized this mode of transportation to ensure her troop of performers had a way home.

An article appeared in The Free Lance-Star on June 12, 1943, stating “The King George Kiddie Klub a group of child entertainers which has made several ap-pearances throughout the county recently will stage a performance at 8 P.M. Wednesday June 12, at the meet-ing of the Shiloh Community League.” The article also stated: “Among those in the Kiddie Klub are Norma Rousselle, Cecelia Kennedy, Audrey Pounds, Dora Mae and Jean Stone, Peggy Anne Thomas, Gloria Dodd, Kathleen Clift, and Mildred and Tommy McGinniss.”

Mrs. Owens just recently celebrated her 97th birthday and she remarked she has always loved children. Just imagine the countless number of young lives that have been touched in such a positive, God-loving way. Our spotlight shines brightly on Mrs. Owens and to those young children she nurtured in the KG Kiddie Klub and the many Christmas plays at Shiloh. Thank you and Happy Birthday, Mrs. Owens, for all you have done.

All Aboard Who’s Coming Aboard—Mary Burnley Owens, honored with flowers this Mother’s Day for being the oldest mother present at church, is 97 years strong. Shown to the left is a young Mary Burnley and her husband, Stanley, and the train they rode in on.

“One hundred years from now, it will not matter what kind of car I drove, what kind of house I lived in, how much money I had in my bank account, nor what my

clothes looked like. But the world may be a little better because I was important in the life of a child.”

—Mary Burnley Owens, 2009

Faith Bible Institute (FBI) By Cathy Lyon

Faith Bible Institute has been a tremendous un-dertaking and one that I am glad to say I have ac-complished. Not only has the information that I learned helped me grow spiritually but it has also helped me understand Biblical concepts that I previ-ously either struggled with or had not studied in depth. This in depth education has also benefited me in teaching the Bible. I have been able to use the information learned as I teach Sunday school, Wednesday Bible studies, and Bible classes for my homeschool co-op both for the truths of the Scrip-tures as well as their historical significance. My per-spective of the Bible is much clearer now and I have an excellent frame of reference for the Old Testa-ment, New Testament, and their individual books. I highly recommend the course for anyone and every-one regardless of where you are in your own faith journey.

Teen Summer Mission Trips

My name is Micaiah Becker and I am going on a mission trip for the summer with Teen Missions International. I am excited and happy to go serve the Lord and do his work. I have been counting down the days until I leave and preparing for a team-building, spir-itual, and physically intensive experience. On June 16 I leave for boot camp in Florida for two weeks. After that, I will be going to Mexico, the Yucatan to be a bit more pre-cise, for four weeks to serve; we will be demolishing old buildings to make room for new ones. Finally I will return to boot camp for debriefing, for a few days, and then return home. I would ask for prayer in overcoming the spiritual challenges. Thank you all, so much, for being a loving and supporting church. My name is Mahala Becker and this summer I will have the opportunity to go to Mongo-lia with Teen Missions International. My team will be helping to run a missions training camp in Ulaanbaatar (the capital of Mongolia) as well as do repairs on an orphanage nearby. I am excited because the Mongolia team is almost twice the size of my team last year, and I am traveling MANY times farther. I am really looking forward to going to Asia, somewhere I have always wanted to go. I’m not excited about the intensive train-ing in Florida or the days of airplane flights to get to Mongolia and so would appreciate prayer in those areas. I am already counting the days to go serve the people of Mongolia.

Hello everyone. We are Shane and Savannah Hagewood. Thank you for supporting us on our mission trip to Chiapas, Mexico. We will be gone July 30 thru August 8th. We are excited to be spreading the news of Je-sus to the people of Chiapas. We are looking forward to meeting the people and working with them each day. Please continue to support us in prayer; specifically in safety, health and that God speaks through us so we can get His message to the people of Chiapas. We appreciate the support and love of our church family at Shiloh Baptist.

My name is Jordan Lyon. I am in Jacksonville, Florida serving in Fort Caroline Baptist Church as an intern to assist in the planning of Summer Jam VBS. I will be able to ex-plore all aspects of children’s ministry and administration from Prek-K to school age programs. Through this experience, I’m hoping to explore a call into children’s ministry. I ask for prayers of discernment as well as encouragement since I am missing my church family. However, even in the first week I am already learning and experiencing many exciting things.

My name is Winston Perry. This upcoming summer I’m going to Honduras. I will be building a road on the Bible Missionary and Work Training Center. I will also be shar-ing the Gospel in my evangelism work. I will be showing the Gospel though puppets and singing. I would like to ask for people to pray for safety while I’m across the sea. My name is Lauren Holman, and I am heading to Ethiopia. I have never even been camping before, so this will be an adventure! Please pray for me because I will be learning how to do construction work, living primitively, and go to a country that can be dangerous. In Ethiopia we are going to continue building the first dormitory building for an orphanage in Bako, Ethiopia. In addition to our work project we are also going to be involved in evangelistic ministry such as sharing the gospel through personal testimo-nies, music, and puppetry in local churches.
