“In the Unidad Nacional de Oncologia Pediatrica, in Guatemala City, during 2010 we had• 321 new cases of pediatric and adolescent cancer • 19,432 medical encounters in outpatient clinic and day hospital

Because of the donations of medical products that NCCS provides to our hospital, children are able to receive free medical treatments. We are grateful for this help.”Dr. Federico Antillon KlussmannFundacion Ayudame a VivirUnidad Nacional de Oncologia PediatricaGuatemala City, Guatemala

“The donations from NCCS have contributed to our medical needs for the 400 patients in active treatments. As we receive the donation we spend a little less from the overall budget we have. Our budget is small and we have a very bad economic situation that affects our country and us. Donations are important and supply us with needed products to help us treat children with cancer at no charge.”Roxana Galindo De HindsFundacion Ayudame a VivirNacional Children’s Hospital “Benjamin Bloom”San Salvador, El Salvador

“This simple note is to thank you and your organization for having helped us with our children here in southern Brazil. We've received an airfreight container with Cisplatin ampules, which were used in chemotherapy sessions in three different hospitals in the cities of Porto Alegre and Ijui, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The drug was very welcomed by medical specialists that take care of children and adults alike. Together with that shipment, an interesting case was found though. It was a play set designed for kids, complete with coloring books and crayons. The kids loved it as it was a way to mitigate their pain by doing something fun!”Jack MartinezVolunteerIjui Ladies Cancer SocietyIjui Charity Hospital Ijui, Brazil

Global Outreach Program An estimated 160,000 children around the world are diagnosed with cancer every year*.

Experts believe the exact number of new cases is probably much higher, because this data is not recorded in many countries. Cancer is quickly becoming the second most common cause of death worldwide (after accidents) for children from birth to age 15. Less than one-fifth of these children receive proper medical care simply because they live in under-developed countries. Access to proper treatment, pharmaceuticals and medical supplies could save tens of thousands of children’s lives worldwide each year. The National Children’s Cancer Society (NCCS) established its Global Outreach Program in 1993 to address the terrible effects of inadequate or nonexistent medical care for thousands of children with cancer around the globe. The program coordinates the distribution of donated pharmaceuticals, medical supplies and supportive-care products to our international partners. Since its inception, the program has distributed more than $332 million in donated medical products to 60 facilities in 39 countries– approximately 2.5 million pounds of desperately needed, donated products used to treat children with cancer. Doctors at our partner facilities estimate that more than 143,000 children have been assisted through program distributions. The success of this humanitarian relief effort is a testimony to the generous spirit of corporate America.

How We Help The Global Outreach Program partners with the best branded and generic pharmaceutical companies in the U.S. to obtain drugs and medical supplies for distribution to children’s hospitals and clinics in under-developed countries. The integrity of these companies assures us that donations carry expiration dates of six months or later. Before any donated product is accepted and delivered to the Global Outreach Program, we carefully assess whether the items are intended for the care of children with cancer. Our hospital contacts are notified when products are available and shares the information with the oncology physicians who accept only what products and quantities they need for children at their facility. We can then be assured that the necessary supply chain is in place to ensure proper use of every item donated. As a result, it is not necessary for us to warehouse any donated products.

(*According to the International Union Against Cancer)

Safety and Professionalism In order to be eligible for donated products, participating medical facilities must meet the following requirements. They include:

- Referred by a healthcare professional and/or international relief organization- Well-trained medical staff- Established cancer treatment protocols- Completed application (in English) for program participation, including documentation of needed supplies, signed facility agreement and pledge form- Information on their country’s Custom rules and regulations for the receipt and release of donated shipments- Substantiate all donated products directly benefitted children with cancer, at no cost to them

Shipping Standards Pharmaceuticals are shipped by air to ensure product stability; other medical supplies are transported by ocean freight. Specific shipping and customs requirements for each participating country are thoroughly researched in advance. A partnership with UPS Supply Chain Solutions provides air and overseas shipping at a reduced cost. Once the NCCS receives a donation, it is shipped to the recipient within one week at no charge to the designated hospital or clinic. We verify the safe arrival of the shipment’s final destination and our partners inform us how the donations were utilized.
