Global Energy Agenda: A New Direction

1.5 billion still lack access to electricity; 2.7 billion rely on traditional biomass;

Unless we do something NOW: 1. 3 billion will still have no access to electricity and the number of those relying on biomass will rise to 2.8 billion

New approach is needed: Prioritization of energy agenda; International framework of action: i.e. Action Agenda (based on

concrete goals and targets) Dedicated funding mechanism(s); Performance indicators to measure progress

SE4ALL:A Vision for 2030

A global initiative for accelerating progress for energy access, while improving energy efficiency and scaling up renewable energy

• Galvanizing commitments and actions from partners;

• Mobilizing stakeholders at all levels for action to advance sustainable energy goals;

• Building a multi-stakeholder platform for action• Launching concrete initiatives, such as public-

private partnerships (PPPs);• Supporting capacity building and energy

planning for the development of low-carbon growth plans; and

• Holding its stakeholders accountable for results.

Energy will be one of 8 core issues to be addressed during the thematic sessions (16-19 June, 2012)

Energy day will focus on recommendations for an action for the public and private sectors

The conclusions will be carried forward to the main Rio+20 conference
