Success stories

Describe a typical day at your investment banking internship placement:

Every day was different, intense, challenging and great fun! I was working within the business development team on a project to find new investors. The project was a great introduction to the world of finance (something I had no prior experience of) and involved learning how the industry works, specifically, how mortgage

What were your favorite aspects of the wider program?

I really enjoyed the social events and the excursions, as they were a great way of meeting and bonding with all of the people from the program. I would say that the Lake District excursion was the one I enjoyed most, since I loved the adventure

backed securities and other structured assets work and how to raise the company profile within the industry. There were some great perks too – in my first week I was lucky enough to attend an investor relations dinner in the city, which was a daunting, but great experience! I hope to return to my internship company again next summer!

Success stories

How did you find the experience?

“I spent a great summer living and working in London whilst enhancing my career prospects. The opportunity to explore London with a group of peers from around the world is an experience I’ll never forget and is one I would recommend highly to other students looking to make the most of their summer break.”

What was the big attraction of the internship program?

“The opportunity to spend the summer with a great firm was what initially attracted me. I interned for one of the largest hedge funds in Europe – to look “behind the closed doors” of a poorly understood industry was hugely exciting and rewarding.”

How has the program helped you with your career?

“My internship placement, coupled with the post-program support provided by City Internships, was instrumental in helping me to focus my aspirations and get a foot on the ladder. I was introduced to another employer by my City Internships group mentor a year after I attended the program and secured a graduate position with them, which evolved into the position I am in now.”

Where are you now?

“I am currently working as an options trader at a proprietary trading firm in Chicago. My experience working at a hedge fund through City Internships provided me with an excellent practical introduction to working in the financial markets. In addition to the invaluable opportunity to see the workings of a trading floor and the day-to-day activities and challenges of a trader, the internship was a comprehensive education in the structure and operations of a trading firm. This experience, and the lessons I learned, were very helpful to me in both finding employment post-graduation as well as to the process of beginning a career in trading.”

Success stories

Do you think your internship placement will help you find a permanent job?

“Yes! I am an aspiring commercial lawyer and this field of law is truly globalized. My experience of working within a different jurisdiction has given me first-hand experience of how global cases and clients have an impact in the UK as well as elsewhere across the world. The City Internships program also gave me a good idea of different ways of working which I look forward to implementing if I get the opportunity to go on an international placement with my firm.”

Apart from your internship, which other aspects of the program did you enjoy?

“The LA program’s accommodation was in a great location. Staying at UCLA gave me a great feel for what it would be like studying at a university in the States and I enjoyed being able to easily get into Hollywood and Beverly Hills, as well as the beaches. A group of interns also took a trip up the Pacific Coast Highway to San Francisco for the July 4th weekend which was great fun, as was the organized trip to Las Vegas!

The program has helped me to improve my ability to adapt to previously unfamiliar situations. I made fantastic friends and we all keep in regular contact.”

Would you recommend the program to other students and graduates?

“Yes, and I already have done! A friend has applied for a place on the 2015 New York program having learned about my fantastic experience.”
