Unique, Integrated, Theme-based Curriculum

Businesses, and business schools, are organized by vertical function, such as marketing, accounting and finance and human resources. But real-world business challenges cross over these functional silos.

In the 1980s, academic leaders at the Marshall School inaugurated a revolutionary new curriculum. Recognizing that real-world business challenges and opportunities aren’t divided into tidy academic silos, but rather touch many if not all of the functions of the organization, Marshall’s leaders designed a curriculum framed around these thematic challenges and opportunities.

This revolutionary curriculum remains unique among business schools, in part because it’s unusually challenging to deliver, as it requires faculty to work across academic disciplines, and it requires us to bring at least two faculty to every GEMBA session. But the benefits of such a curriculum more than compensate for the challenges of delivering it, as has been proven over these recent decades by the testimonies and career achievements of thousands of program graduates.

GEMBA’s 10 themes, each reflecting the dynamic environment that faces real-world business leaders today, cut horizontally across business and academic silos, giving you an integrated look at the challenges and opportunities you face in your career.

While each GEMBA session is integrated around a key business theme, the themes themselves are integrated into a strategic whole. Your 20 months of GEMBA study give you a solid, strategically balanced and integrated understanding of real-world business challenges and opportunities.

Join GEMBA and experience this transformative curriculum firsthand.

Integration Example: Theme 3, The General Manager as Integrator

While Theme 2 focuses on how the corporate enterprise appears to external stakeholders, Theme 3 turns the focus inward—on how a savvy GM weaves the various parts of the organization into a tightly knit team that delivers focused, cohesive performance.

Professor Carnevale delves into the complicated yet especially important world of negotiation, a skill that is essential for your ability as a GM to make changes in the organization that improve performance.

Professor Young explores managerial accounting – tools such as variable cost productivity and the balanced scorecard that support your managerial decision-making and control of the enterprise.

Professor Nunes uses the MarkStrat simulation to show how marketing decisions influence, and are affected by, many parts of the organization, and how the resulting decisions directly affect your outcomes.

Professor Callahan reviews the financing decisions you must make as a GM to bolster the enterprise.

Teaching: Business and Corporate Strategy

In 2008, Professor Bhambri was named one of the best EMBA faculty in the world by The Wall Street Journal.

“One of my primary goals in the GEMBA classroom is to ‘unfreeze’ students’ thinking. They sometimes view the challenges they face in their business lives as unique, when in fact they are usually not. Once they see the

fundamental similarities underlying many business challenges, they are empowered to learn from the other students as well as from the cases and other materials I’ve prepared. The results are highly collaborative and rewarding, and not just in the classroom—I often hear later from them that their GEMBA experience has dramatically strengthened their ability to lead change and growth in their globalized organizations.”

Martin DaffnerGEMBA Class of 2010Director of Research and Development, Asia Pacific,TE Connectivity, Telecom Networks Division

“To me, the ROI of GEMBA can be expressed in three simple words: asking better questions. The GEMBA experience has given me such a broad-based and in-depth business perspective that I find I’m consistently able to ask better questions about what I see in my working environment, and that by articulating such questions I can drive better results from my team. Asking better questions has also proven valuable to me personally—my ability to express a greater understanding of business at the leadership level has gained me access to a remarkable new position. My GEMBA studies have been an essential contributor to this major career step.”

Professor Callahan reviews the financing decisions you must make as a GM to bolster the enterprise.

invaluable business opportunities.

Shanghai Jiao Tong University is rated among China’s premier institutions. The Antai College of Economics &

"As a venture capitalist in China, I must travel a lot. GEMBA’s schedule was flexible enough for me to manage my studies and my work responsibilities. But I also found that, through the strong network of both USC and Jiao Tong University, I was able to develop some very high quality deal flows.”

Roman Shaw, Class of 2006Managing Partner, DT Capital Partners

"I’m a third-generation Trojan–both of my parents and two of my grandparents earned degrees at USC–and I’m a graduate of the first GEMBA class. I have seen the power of the Trojan Family over generations, and now see its power among our GEMBA family. I’m honored to contribute to GEMBA’s development, and to that of our partner institutions."

Howard Wen GEMBA Class of 2010Vice President, International Financial Advisor, Merrill Lynch

"As a private wealth portfolio manager, my work is mostly about finance. The GEMBA program has given me exposure to aspects of business I don’t otherwise gain, such as the challenges and

opportunities on a factory floor, or developing a multinational brand in mainland China. The finance-related components of the program were valuable for me, as they help me bolster my systematic understanding of the field as well as the latest developments, but it’s the non-finance components that I feel are delivering huge ROI for me, because I can use my greatly expanded understanding of business to more dynamically interact with my clients and boost the performance of their portfolios."
