Bridging The Gap: Self Awareness Is Key
•Cultivate self-awareness of your own communication
style—how you relate to others and like others to relate to
you
•Reflect on own values and beliefs that are influenced by
the culture/generation in which you were raised
•Know your triggers, assumptions, and biases to better help
you gauge and manage your reactions
•View conflict as an opportunity to identify underlying issues
or assumptions that need to be evaluated
20
Effective Multicultural Communication
• Greet who is before you in a friendly manner, using non-
verbal gestures (smiling, eye-contact, etc) especially if they
speak a different language
• Establish rapport
• Bridge language and accent barriers
• Be patient, flexible and sensitive
• Learn about the culture you are interfacing with
21
Diversity Inclusion Breeds Organizational Success!
• Improved morale
• Increased motivation
• Greater work satisfaction
• More cohesive work environment
• Heightened communication
• Higher rates of employee engagement
• Greater cultural awareness
• Cultural enrichment of the workplace
22
The Bottom Line
One culture cannot be judged by the standards or values of
another. The assumptions we make about people
determine, in large part, how we relate to them. As such, it’s
important to remember:
– We are now working and interacting in a 24/7 global
matrix
– Your cultural values directly and indirectly impact
everyone with whom you communicate
– Your level of sensitivity to different understandings of
time, space, business etiquette, team collaboration and
managing projects will advance or impede your career.
