Breaking Ground Tijuana Day Trip Saturday, November 17, 2012 Do you have an international service requirement? Do you have a desire to be in solidarity with our neighbors across the border? University Ministry‐sponsored TJ day trips are a great way to do both. The trip seeks to engage students with the community in Tijuana through a service project, home visits, a border tour, and reflection. If you are looking to explore or grow in the values of solidarity, spirituality, social justice, and simplicity, these trips are perfect for you. For more information, please visit http://www.sandiego.edu/um/service_and_social_justice/breaking_ground_monthly_tijuana_trips.php. Theology on Tap Thursday, November 29, 2012 from 7‐8:30 p.m. in Grad Law Commons (SLP 401) Theology on Tap is a fun and informal way to gather together with other grad students for food, drinks and community. It is a great chance to meet other graduate and law students at USD. This month, Chris Burden, Disability Service, will offer us a reflection on the spirituality and mental health. Don’t miss your opportunity to meet other graduate students, as well as grow in your spirituality and faith. All are welcome, so bring a classmate or two! For more information, please contact Andrew McMillin at [email protected] or ext. 6818.
Five USD Law Students Ensure Justice Is Served Wrongfully incarcerated for more than two years in a federal detention center and awaiting deportation to his native Mexico, Ricardo Oviedo‐Cortez wondered if he would ever be able to hold his newly born grandson. He dreamed of once again walking his 7‐year‐old daughter to school as a free man in the United States—a country he had called home for 35 years. Oviedo‐Cortez never gave up hope, but his options for righting the injustice that resulted in his detention and ordered deportation were quickly diminishing. He never imagined that five USD School of Law students, armed with intelligence and tenacity, would rescue him. In August 2011, USD School of Law students James Baumann, ’12; Jamie Ritterbeck, ’12; Jessica Sudweeks, ’12; Ryann Sweeney, ’12; and Natasha Wu, ’12, were selected as members of two USD Appellate Clinic teams. They never could have foreseen that their work, under the skillful supervision of USD School of Law Professor‐in‐Residence and Appellate Clinic Executive Director Michael Devitt and San Diego attorney Pam Parker, would force the U.S. government to release Oviedo‐Cortez and obtain a court‐ordered mandate that no legal justification existed for his deportation.
