A message from the

captain

I was fortunate to attend the Presidents Cup with Cathy and ran into a good number of Glenelg members, including former Club Captain John Rawson. As we wandered around Royal Melbourne with 30,000 of our closest friends, we could not help remark on the magnificent condition of the course. Never again will I whinge about slick greens at Glenelg in the summer.

The one thing that stood out for John and me was that Glenelg could have staged the Cup given the extraordinary condition that our course is in. I would mount a good argument to anyone that Glenelg’s fairways are in better condition and more consistent than Royal Melbourne. Keep in mind that Royal Melbourne has had north of 30 people working on the course for the last 6 months and our team is less than half that. When you see our staff on the course, say g’day to them and tell them what a great job they are doing. They will appreciate it.

As the summer rolls on we will continue to keep a close eye on traffic, especially Saturdays. The subject of timesheets will also continue to be reviewed. A small number of members, specifically some Saturday morning members, believed the Committee of Management has an agenda to implement timesheets. This could not be further from the truth,

however we have to be mindful that if the majority of members want timesheets and they alleviate over-crowded fields on Saturdays, then timesheet could become the norm one day.

Thanks to all of those who completed the most recent timesheet survey. The results confirmed what the Committee of Management had sensed from regular feedback, namely that in 9 short months from the previous survey in January, the member’s opinion had shifted from approximately 80/0 to 60/40 in favour of the starter system.

Shane Robinson is settling in well and his team including Gareth Jones, Paul Gander and Adrian Wickstein are the best front of house team I have seen anywhere. We are very fortunate to have such a team and I know we are the envy of other clubs in this respect.

Our office, bar and catering, and greens staff are the backbone of our Club and I want to thank David and his teams for their efforts during the year, in keeping the Club moving forward and looking after the needs of members.

Wishing you a Merry Christmas and fewer 3 putts.

Christmas at last!

ASR Wetland ProjectIt is hard to believe planning for the ASR project commenced over 8 years ago, with construction finally taking place between May 008 and January 009, and the start of 011 seeing the club take over the scheme after the maintenance contract expired.

Course NewsReport by Course Superintendent, Daryl Sellar

A lot has been learned over the past 8 years, and as with any major project, hindsight is a wonderful thing. However, for the most part, the project has gone to plan, with critical environmental quality parameters being met by the middle of the year, and our licence to operate the system being granted. We can now happily report we commenced injection of fresh stormwater into our aquifers on June 0 this year.

There have been various teething problems that have restricted the amount of injection undertaken, but even with the “part-time” nature of the system’s operation so far, we have managed to inject over 100 megalitres (ML) of water (i.e. 100,000,000L)! This is approximately one third of the amount of water we are aiming to inject each year, so we are confident with full operation we should meet this target, which will see us

injecting more water than we extract, hence having a positive impact on the aquifer and the environment, and securing the club’s water supply for the future.

A lot of work has gone into understanding the cost of running a scheme such as this, and our initial projections appear to be reasonably accurate, but more will be known after a full year of system operation. The costs associated with this scheme are reflective of the true value of water in today’s climate, with golf courses around the world now being faced with the reality of water being a highly valued resource, and priced accordingly.

We will have to drain the wetlands annually (April) to manage the European Carp population, but the investment in a semi automatic drainage system will

make this process relatively efficient, with draining, clean up, and refilling expected to be completed within a week, minimising disruption to the aesthetics of the area.

Interest in our scheme has reached around the globe, with an article I wrote for the Golf Pro magazine of Finland being published in July, and in November I gave a presentation on the scheme to the Golf Club Managers Association National Conference of Great Britain and Ireland.

We should be very proud of the club’s commitment to sustainable water management, and the fact that we are seen as leaders on a global scale.

Bunker Refurbishment Plan

Annual Course RenovationsEach year, usually on the first Monday in September, a significant amount of renovation work is done on our course playing surfaces.

A large amount of this work is undertaken on Renovation Day, which is always the first Monday in September, when the course is closed for the entire day to allow as much of this work to be carried out efficiently and safely for all concerned.

The main priority on the day is to get the greens completed so that play can resume the next day with minimal interference and disruption. This results in a long day, with work usually not finishing until 5.30pm.

Whilst disruptive for a few weeks, the benefits of heavy greens renovations early in spring are felt for the remainder of the year.

Whilst all this is taking place on the greens, the opportunity is also taken to continue working on the fairways. Ideally, it is still a bit early in the season to be renovating couch, as the soil temperatures are still a bit low for

the couch to grow actively. However, we overcome some of this through the fertility program we run throughout the year, and by retaining some good turf colour and density throughout winter, ensuring recovery is as quick as possible.

Renovation day is a great opportunity for us to prepare our turf for its most stressful time of year, but also plays a big role in the condition of the course throughout winter as well.

So whilst we appreciate it is an inconvenience to have the course closed for a day, we trust the benefits for the remainder of the year are appreciated.

Thank you once again for your cooperation and understanding this year, and we look forward to returning the course to great condition over the spring and summer months.

Daryl Sellar M.Agr (Turf Mgt) Course Superintendent

The creation of revetted edge bunkers has provided a point of difference from other South Australian clubs, and a connection to the links playing characteristics that are the driver for the course design concept.

Distinctive, intimidating, spectacular, strategic, controversial, all words that could be used to describe the impact of the bunkering throughout Glenelg.

There is no doubt they have become synonymous with the golfing experience at Glenelg, which makes you consider every shot carefully.

It has been over a decade since the first of the bunkers were created, and much has been learned about

their management and durability in that time. Such is their importance, a designated refurbishment program has been implemented, commencing in 010 to coincide with the club’s Course Enhancement Plan, which will see each bunkers condition enhanced and maintained, including improved golfer access, and its integration with the landscape developed even further.

Bunkering on Holes 9, 10, 14 and 18 have undertaken significant transformation and improvement with minor enhancement works conducted across the course.

More sigificant works are scheduled to be undertaken next winter.

Women’s Golf News From the Ladies Captain, Anne Marks

Women’s Glenelg Grange Trophy Challenge 6th October 2011 - Glenelg Golf Club

The Glenelg team had a convincing win, with 6 Glenelg pairs scoring in the net 70’s. The course was in great condition after the spring renovations, with the 8.30am shotgun start providing the opportunity for the players to enjoy a sociable lunch in the dining room.

Glenelg looks forward to the return match next year at The Grange, hoping that the newly constructed East couse will be available.

Mazda Hospitality Day 8th November 2011

Held on 8th November. The day was warm and overcast, becoming very hot and steamy once the sun broke through. A field of 14 players, with 30 visitors representing 14 different clubs from as far away as Burra, hit off from 8.30am.

Sponsorship from City Mazda continued for the third year. The General Manager, Phil Greig, together with one of his sales team, toured the course during play offering refreshments, and provided most generous prizes for the winners of the Pinehurst Foursomes event, as well NTPs on all par 3s and long and straight drives.

This event was won by Fran Brown and Vicki Hynes, with a score of 70 6/8. Runners up, with a score of 71, were Jan Dale-Harris and Cath Symons. Rosemary Jackson, from West Lakes, won the major raffle, a weekend for two at McCracken including the use of a Mazda car.

The 8.30am shotgun start allowed a convivial lunch to be shared following play, with participants enjoying the refreshing lunch selection.

Women’s Annual General Meeting 25th October 2011

The Women’s Committee AGM was held on 5th October. The 9-hole 4 ball aggregate competition preceded the meeting, with 4 playing groups and a field of 93 players (99 in 010). hit off in cool, windy but sunny conditions. All teams got away by 9.00am, there were no delays and most groups had submitted their cards by 11.15am.

The winning team of Helen Phillips, Nancy Craigie, Jeanne Scardigno and Genny Amadio had a score of 64 stableford points. The runners up, on a countback, were Kristy Morrison, Mollie Scott, Julie Moir and Marg Magarey.

Earlier in the year, Shirley Kalisch, upon her retirement as a player from the club, donated a dozen golf balls to the Women’s Committee. I invited Shirley to present the vouchers to the winning team, and use her donations for the ball rundowns to a third and fourth team place. (3rd: Barb Heald and Jill Gehling – score was doubled also 64pts, and 4th Jill Hodge, Felicity Rawson, Judy Clayton and Chris James 63pts).

During the meeting we farewelled from the committee Joyce Thomas, Cathy Johnson and Jo Rawson, and welcomed Lynne Cotton (Vice President), Ann Colmer and Janet Fleer.

Magain Real Estate Golf Day 16th August 2011

Testimony to the popularity of this golf day, 88 of the 11 entrants hit off in very steady rain. Luckily the rain eased during the morning, giving players time to dry off before lunch!

A shotgun start allowed players to enjoy lunch in the dining room. We were treated to some great entertainment, with the event sponsors providing a magician, who kept everyone wondering how can that be possible!

Winners of the 4 BBB competition with 55 points, were Robyn Hayball, Julie Moir, Marie O’Halleran & Pat Whelan

Runners-up, with 54 points, were Desley Carey, Carolyn Dillon, Deb Sterrey & Genny Yeomans

Jane Nelson donated prizes for the winners, NTPs on all par 3s and two long drives. Proceeds for the day helped support the Junior Foundation.

Our thanks once again go to Jane for her most generous sponsorship, and a great day.

Member NewsNews from the Committee of Management and around the Club

The achievements of the South Australian golf industry have been celebrated by approximately 50 golfing representatives from around the state at the inaugural South Australian Golf Industry Awards Night held at the Adelaide Oval on the evening of Saturday 9 October.

Amongst the highlights of the Awards evening was the induction of five local legends of the game to the newly created South Australian Golf Hall of Fame, three of whom would be proud to call Glenelg Golf Club their home.

Voted by representatives of the four organising bodies, namely Golf SA, PGA of Australia, Golf Management Australia and the Australian Golf Course Superintendents Association, the five inductees to the SA Golf Hall of Fame were Rhona Watson OAM, Murray Crafter, John Crosby OAM, Jane Crafter and Bob Tuohy.

Rhonda Watson was a noted player and

administrator both at club and state level. Dominating women’s golf from 195 to 1968, Watson won 1 state amateur titles, in the process becoming the first female player in SA to obtain a scratch handicap.

Her administrative career included a three-year term as President of the South Australian Ladies’ Golf Union of which she was awarded life membership. She received an OAM in 1978 for her services to golf.

A member of the iconic Crafter golfing family, Murray Crafter was a noted professional, coach and course architect for over 40 years. Recording 13 professional victories between 1953 and 1970, Crafter’s local victories included six SA Open and 11 SA PGA titles.

Murray Crafter held the position of resident professional at Glenelg Golf Club for over 30 years and tutored many of the state’s elite players, including a young Rhonda Watson, who joined the Adelaide sandbelt club as a

junior in the late 1940s.

The final inductee of the Awards ceremony was noted former professional and tournament promoter, Bob Touhy. Tuohy’s professional career spanned over 15 years, including many state Open and PGA titles together with international victories in New Zealand, South Africa and the UK.

Upon his retirement in 1974, Tuohy started his career as a tournament promoter with the advent of the West Lakes Classic in 1974, and has gone on to manage many of Australasia’s most successful tournaments, including the ANZ Ladies’ Masters and the New Zealand Open.

In total, over 0 trophies were presented as part of the inaugural SA Industry Awards Night, which covered industry specific awards from the GMA, PGA and AGCSA, as well as awards for volunteer contributions to the game from both metropolitan and country areas.

Glenelg Golf Club is a prestigious Club, rich in tradition and history. Whilst we have adjusted our dress code in line with modern trends, we ask that all members and guests adhere to the requirements, particularly when advised by Club or Pro Shop staff.

Some of the changes made to the Club’s Dress Code in recent years include:

For men, all shirts must be tucked in on the golf course

For men and women, cargo style trousers/shorts, and any denim clothing, is not permitted on the golf course or practice facilities

Please note: Denim is permitted in the Clubhouse, but cargo style trousers or shorts are not.

To avoid any embarrassment, please ensure that you and your guests are aware of the new dress requirements prior to playing golf. Copies of the Dress Code can be collected from the Administration Office or Pro Shop, or downloaded from the Club’s website.

Recent Testimonials

South Australian Golf Hall of Fame

Club Captain, Jim Johnson recently had the pleasure of showcasing our golf course to golfing legend, Sir Bob Charles. Sir Bob had some very kind words of Glenelg stating in a later email:

“I feel sure the members have a golf course to be proud of, and, as I said to one young member, to have a golf course of this quality to play on, he has the opportunity to become a great champion.”

“The facilities provided for the members are exceptional and it was pleasing to see the club bustling with youth who were making the most of the practice areas provided.”

One word to describe our visit to your club last week – SENSATIONAL

The course, the clubhouse, the lunch, the very generous gift of a couple of bottles of red and above all the attention of the staff, who all seem to sing from the same song sheet, were first class! We were very impressed.

Many thanks for allowing our group to play on your wonderful Golf Course last week.

We were made to feel welcome and your hospitality was exceptional. Please pass on my thanks to your Golf Club Committee and staff.

Reilly’s Wines have been generous enough to support Pennant Golf for 01 as the major sponsor with McGrath Real Estate and SA Safe Supplies also putting their support behind our Club’s endeavours for success.

This is a positive step for 01, as we welcome the services of Shane Robinson (Golf Operations Manager) and Gareth Jones (Head Coach) with a wealth of experience, skills and knowledge.

Key changes to the Rules of Golf Effective 1st January 2012

Ball Moving After Address (Rule 18-2b). A new exception is added which exonerates the player from penalty if their ball moves after it has been addressed when it is known or virtually certain they did not cause the ball to move. For example, if it is a gust of wind that moves the ball after it has been addressed, there is no penalty and the ball is played from its new position.

Ball in Hazard; Prohibited Actions (Rule 13-4). Exception to this Rule is amended to permit a player to smooth sand or soil in a hazard at any time, including before playing from that hazard, provided it is for the sole purpose of caring for the course and Rule 13- (improving lie, area of intended stance or swing or line of play) is not breached.

Time of Starting (Rule 6-3a). The rule is amended to provide that the penalty for starting late, but within five minutes of the starting time, is reduced from disqualification

to loss of the first hole in match play or two strokes at the first hole in stroke play. Previously this penalty reduction could be introduced as a condition of competition.

The most significant change (Rule 18-b) will see an end to situations like the one witnessed during the final round of this year’s Open Championship where Rory McIlroy was penalised when his ball was moved on the 7th green by the wind after he had addressed it.

Padraig Harrington, three-time Major winner and R&A – Working for Golf Ambassador, said: “I am delighted with the changes, in particular the ball moving after address. Every time the wind blows I am worried that my ball is going to move and I am worried about grounding my putter, distracting me from trying to hole my putt. “This change will speed up play, there won’t be as many suspensions and players won’t be getting penalised or disqualified unfairly. It is definitely giving us players a little bit of a break.”

The following Four Priority Changes to the GA Handicap System came into effect on Wednesday, 1 September:

1. Alter ‘Best 10 of 0’ to ‘Best 8 of 0’.

2. Change the Multiplier from 0.96 to 0.93.

3. Introduce an Anchor which will prevent a player’s handicap from increasing any more than 4 strokes beyond their best exact handicap from the previous 1-month rolling period.

4. GOLF Link will cap the score that goes into a player’s handicap record at no more than 50 strokes for Women and 40 strokes for Men.

Frequently Asked Questions:Q: From 1 September 011, my handicap calculation will be based on the best 8 of my most recent 0 scores. Do I still divide the total by 10 before multiplying by the new figure of 0.93? A: No, you will need to divide the total by 8.

Q: When the Anchor comes into effect on 1 September 011, can my Anchor handicap come from before 1 September 011? A: Yes, on 1 September 011, a player’s Anchor handicap will be the best exact handicap they have achieved in the period between 1 September 010 and 1 September 011.

Q: What if I’m coming back from an injury or my handicap clearly won’t be sufficient for some other reason? A: As has always been the case, the club should manually adjust your handicap – when your club enters your new handicap into GOLF Link, it will over-ride the old Anchor. Clubs are encouraged to make use of this regulation when needed.

MEN’S SUMMER MATCH PLAY: Congratulations to Bevan Roberts on winning the 011 Men’s Winter Matchplay Trophy. Bevan defeated David Allen 6/5 in the final played recently.

GOVERNOR’S CUP: Congratulations to Club member, Mark Trenwith, on winning the 011 Governor’s Cup, played on Friday, 6th August 011.

This year’s event marked a special occasion, with His Excellency Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce AC CSC RANR joining the field for golf, playing alongside Club Captain, Jim Johnson and Club President, Geoff Gitsham.

The Governor’s Legacy Cup is the final of an annual competition, for which some ,000 golfers from 100 golf clubs around South Australia compete. The event commenced in 1949 and raises funds for Legacy. Glenelg Golf Club was invited to host the first year and has been the home for the event ever since. Since its inception, the Governor’s Legacy Cup has raised well over $1million for Legacy.

PAIRS & PARTNERS EVENT: Labour Day Holiday - 3rd October 011

Congratulations to Harry and Christina Larsen on winning the Labour Day Holiday Pairs and Partners Event with a fantastic 4BBB Stableford score of 50 points!

WINERY CHALLENGE: The 011 Winery Challenge was another great success. 158 members and guests, accompanied by 54 Winery Reps and 9 Winery Suppliers participated in this fantastic annual event. Staff worked tirelessly once again to ensure a spectacular event, with the day now regarded amongst members as one of, if not the best day of the year at the Club. Special thanks goes to Karen Steindorf, who has carried on Martyn’s tradition in working tirelessly to make the day a success. Thank you also go to Mike Dobson and Jim Johsnon for MC’ing the day. Importantly, over $,500 was raised on the day for the Animal Welfare League.

MARK KAIN MEMORIAL TROPHY: The running of the SAMC Mark Kain Memorial Trophy competition, also known as the $100 Day, run twice per year is now becoming an institution at the club. This much anticipated event is run by the SAMC players, for the players.

On a beautiful early Sunday morning in late October, with some testing wind and the course set up as tough as it can get - black tees and tough pin positions, 3 expectant players lined up for the Stableford competition. The format alternates between Stableford and Stroke. Some players like to play themselves into form on the Saturday, some like not to waste a good round, some don’t have a big night before for fear of being a bit seedy for the early start. Some go through the same routines and some do things totally out of routine. It’s each to their own in quest of the big prize. All know there is only one winner and no prizes for second. Sometimes with this great game, the most unexpected can happen, and for some reason, for one player, everything can come together on the day, out of the blue, and for 4 hours, the game we all love seems so easy... Well sort of.

A lot of spirited golf was played, but ultimately it was Tony Martin, two time runner up in the past with no expectations, who finally prevailed with 36 points, closely followed by the defending champion Michael (poor ol Maggert) Maguire, and two time former winner Andrew Hodge, both with 35 points.

The lunch, trophy presentation, speeches and hard luck stories follow, which all adds to what makes this event so special.

Great course, great competition, great food and wine, great organization (special thanks to Grant Goodier and Kenny Evans) mixed with great camaraderie amongst the players, continues for hours after . This is what the SAMC and Glenelg Golf Club is all about!

MEN’S CLUB FOURSOMES: Congratulations to Ben Tuohy & Simon Connelly on winning the 011 Men’s Club Foursomes Championship. They shot rounds of 76, 74, 150 to beat James McDonald & Chris Whitford by 6 shots (75, 81, 156).

In the A Grade Foursomes Championship, Steve Weeks & Greg Kendall took out the title with an 18 hole net score of 70.5, shots ahead of Ben Tuohy & Simon Connelly. The B Grade Foursomes Championship was won by Glenn Sterrey & Steve Gentle with a net 75, just ahead of Michael Maguire & Grant Goodier on net 78.5. Finally, the C grade title was won by Bevan Roberts & Patric Alderman, just pipping Bruce Du-Rieu & Dusan Nenadovic by shots.

2011 FOUNDATION DAY: Thank you to everyone who supported the recent 011 Glenelg Golf Club Foundation Day. The day was an overwhelming success with almost $0k raised for our Junior Golf Program.

ANNE SMERDON GIRLS’ INVITATIONAL: In the Girls’ Championships, Jenny Lee fired rounds of 79, 36, 115 to take out both the Club Championship title and the Anne Smerdon Junior Invitational event played in conjunction with the championship. Elysia Yap came in nd, whilst Matilda Wheare took out the Ella Cole Trophy with the best net score of 107.5 over the 7 hole event.

BAY VS. BAY: Held at Glenelg this year with 40 players from both Glenelg and Victor Harbour Golf Club’s, saw Glenelg win by a total of four matches. The second time in three years, but only the second time in ten years. The cream rises to the top!

The Victor Harbor people really appreciated our hospitality, catering and as always, our golf course. We all look forward to accepting the challenge of beating them on their home course next year.

The Glenelg Golf Club Junior Development Program provides the opportunity for Junior members and potential members, regardless of their ability, to improve, learn, enjoy and respect all that the game of golf and Glenelg Golf Club membership have to offer.

South Coast Junior Trip

This year’s South Coast Junior Trip took a different turn in 011 with Links Lady Bay chosen as the base for this increasingly popular part of the Club’s Junior Development Program.

In previous years, juniors had the pleasure of playing some of the South Coast’s best courses, including Victor Harbor, South Lakes and McCracken, which had also been used as the base for accommodation.

With a fresh change needed, Links Lady Bay put up the goods in regards to accommodation, service and price, ensuring the trip would be another great success.

At an extremely civilised 9:00am, everyone gathered in the western car park at the Club in preparation for the 45 minute car journey to Links Lady Bay. As always, Paul Duregon and Adrian Wickstein were raring to go, and with Lachy and Haydn Booth’s mum, Jodie, adding to the transport and supervision, the sights were set on a great few days away.

The trip was short, although a visit to the Normanville bakery was enjoyed by most, whilst others had to put up with grabbing a pie or pasty from the Links Lady Bay pro shop. On arrival, bags were unloaded, breakfast supplies rationed to each room and everyone prepared for the first of three and a half rounds of full on, competitive golf in perfect weather conditions.

Links Lady Bay was in impeccable condition and this showed with some outstanding results. Will Starkey blitzed the field with 45 points, with Sam Raschella in second on 40 points. Mitch Taht closed the top 3 positions with 37 points.

After golf, everyone settled into their spacious rooms at the Links Lady Bay hotel whilst the “adults” checked into their 3-bedroom St Andrews Boulevard apartment. A few quick games of 8-Ball in the Lady Bay games room were enjoyed by some, whilst others spent time studying for upcoming exams (good work Yap Yap!).

Dinner on the first night was an outstanding

selection of pizzas and salads, with the Lady Bay staff treating the group like royalty. An endless supply of pizzas came to an end when the group moved into the games room for more 8-Ball games and general chit chat.

Out of the corner of Wicky’s eye, a poker table was noticed, and after sourcing a deck of cards from bar staff, this became a popular venue for the remainder of the night. Numerous hands were played, and whilst the adults hogged the table, a few juniors dared get involved, some with more success than others! Betting was aggressive and chips were changing hands left, right and centre. A great night was had by most, and some more so than others!

The next morning saw an early start and perfect weather conditions again. Stableford was the competition of the day and the scoring was again impressive. Sam Hynes took the win with 39 points followed by the first day champ, Will Starkey on 37 points. Jack Hynes finished 3rd with 36 points.

The afternoon was much warmer than expected and the scheduled afternoon 18 hole ambrose event was reduced to 9 holes, giving everyone the opportunity to make use of the great facilities on offer at Links Lady

Bay, including the pool, tennis courts and practice fairway.

Conveniently, the “adults” subsequently enjoyed the afternoon on the clubhouse balcony, sipping their coronas and watching boats pass by in the gulf, rather than slaving away on the golf course with the juniors.

For dinner that night, the group enjoyed the company of Club Captain, Jim Johnson, who made the trip across from Victor Harbor to spend some time with the group, prior to joining them on the final day for golf.

Dinner was a selection of schnitzel and chips, or fish and chips, and the servings were amazingly genereous. Once again, the group were treated like royalty, with their private dining room set up for us to enjoy. After the usual speeches, the 8-Ball table was again the source of great attention, closely followed by the poker table.

Again, the poker table provided some interesting action with some previous winners being brought back to earth very quickly. One old man, who shall remain nameless, took the lot after some intense one on one hands, lasting late into the night, to determine the Lady Bay Poker King.

Day 3 saw the weather turn ugly, and whilst Travelling to Fleurieu Golf Club, the heavens opened up and dumped more rain on the group than poker chips won by Paul Duregon the night before (oops, he was supposed to remain nameless!)

After a quick and muddy dash from the car park to the clubhouse at Fleurieu in pouring rain, the clouds cleared up and conditions improved remarkably for most of the day. Unfortunately, it poured over the closing holes and most players walked into the clubhouse after their rounds looking like drowned rats.

Despite the weather, the scoring was amazingly good, with girl power taking hold. Both Christine Beasley and Elysia Yap tied on 40 points, closely followed by Jack Hynes on 39 points.

Overall, the week belonged to Will Starkey with a 3-round total of 10 points (averaging 40 points per round), with Sam Raschella in second place on 110 points. Elysia Yap took out 3rd place with 104

points, and given she spent most of the trip with her head buried in school books is an outstanding effort. Closing out the top 6 were brothers Jack (101 points) and Sam Hynes (100 points) and Jake Hurst, also on 100 points. Last but not least was Todd Williams on a grand total of 73 points for 3 rounds – clearly so traumatised by the trip he was unable to provide this report to us by the print deadline!

Once again, the South Coast Junior Trip was a great success, a great source of camaraderie, and more importantly, a great deal of fun for all participants. A special thank you must go to Paul Duregon and Jody Booth for their outstanding supervisory duties, Adrian Wickstein for his effortless coaching and assistance, and David Brand for his usual administrative brilliance. Thanks must also go to Jim Johnson, who joined the group on the final day for golf and provided the addition of “Club royalty” to the trip for the juniors.

Finally, thanks to the team at Links Lady Bay and Fleurieu Golf Club, who, from the pro shop, food & beverage and hotel staff, were outstanding. Putting up with 18 noisy, hyperactive and crazy teens is not easy at the best of times, but their efforts were well and truly appreciated by the group.
