Dear parents, The P&C Annual General Meeting and February Meeting were held last Monday evening. It was very rewarding to have a number of people in attendance and as a result we had to move the meeting to a classroom. In introducing new people to the P&C we revised why the P&C exists and looked at the allocation of executive roles for 2019. One of our new members, in considering costs for the school suggested that we continue issuing paper/hard copies of the newsletter to ONLY THOSE PEOPLE WHO REQUEST ONE (see below in this newsletter - this will save substantial printing and paper costs). Additionally, one of our ‘old regulars’ suggested that we add the ‘Student Messages’ for the week to the newsletter (so that they can remind their children)and that will begin this week. Thank you to everyone who attended and congratulations to the new executive of: President – Mrs Vorobieff Vice Presidents – Mrs Hansen and Mrs Estall Treasurer – Mrs Edmunds Secretary- Mrs Kember Uniform Shop –Mrs Hansen Fund Raising Coordinator – Mrs Moylan The School Newsletter – Do You Want to Receive a Hard/paper Copy of the Newsletter? If you wish to continue to receive a paper copy of the newsletter, please return the slip below. Toilets – We do realise that at times, parents are visiting the school and either they or their children might need to use a toilet. To assist parents the ‘Disabled Toilet’ facility (located in between the girls and boys toilets alongside the library) will be left unlocked for your use. Please DO NOT allow pre-schoolers to go in there alone as the door can be locked from the inside. Bullying –what it is! Sometimes children will tell mum or dad that they have been bullied. Sometimes parents phone the school to alert us that their child has been bullied. Often it is simply that children have a social/play difficulty that they need some assistance with to solve it. When children report , ‘He doesn’t like me.’ Or ‘She doesn’t want to sit with me.’ or ‘They won’t let me play in their game.’ Or so on. These are social/interpersonal problems. Bullying occurs when:

• Over an extended period of time or on a number of occasions • A bigger, older or more powerful child gains gratification from • Pressuring a younger or smaller or less able child to continually act in a manner they do not wish to.

Bullying requires a significant degree of counselling for both parties – for the bullied child – to develop confidence, self-esteem, courage and resolve to report incidents and for the bully, to understand their need, to re-direct it and to understand how they did it and develop empathy with the child they bullied so that they do not repeat their actions. Should you ever have any concerns about any of these concepts, please see your child’s teacher in the first instance. Have a good week, Yours faithfully, Doug Meaney Principal

School Bounce Back Program 2019 Bounce Back is a program taught to students from K-6. This year it will be taught as part of the Personal Development, Health and Physical Education(PDHPE) syllabus. The program focuses mainly on the teaching of coping skills to help children respond positively to the complexity of their everyday lives. In other words, children are taught to ‘bounce back’ after experiencing sadness, difficulties, frustrations and hard times. These are the 10 units covered in the program:

■ Core Values ■ Social Values ■ Relationships ■ People Bouncing Back ■ Emotions ■ Courage ■ Success ■ Humour ■ Looking on the Bright Side

Each week the newsletter will contain a message to share with your child and an activity to help support the messages from this program. There will also be notifications put onto the SkoolBag app. Below is the Bounce Back acronym that is displayed in every classroom. Bad times don’t last. Things always get better. Stay optimistic. Other people can help if you talk to them. Get a reality check. Unhelpful thinking makes you feel more upset. Think again. Nobody is perfect – not you and not others. Concentrate on the positives (no matter how small) and use laughter. Everybody experiences sadness, hurt, failure, rejection and setbacks sometimes, not just you. They are a normal part of life. Try not to personalise them. Blame fairly. How much of what happened was due to you, to others and to bad luck or circumstances? Accept what can’t be changed (but try to change what you can first) Catastrophising exaggerates your worries. Don’t believe the worst possible picture. Keep things in perspective. It’s only part of your life.
