dmit it. We have all, regardless of

gender, at some point stared intently

at a woman with a sizable pair of

breasts. Be it out of admiration,

envy or visual entertainment, we

just cannot help but steal a look

and wonder just how amazing it is to be blessed with

a full bosom. We fantasise that this woman must be

very popular with men, that she must look fantastic

in swimsuits, and that she must lead a fabulous life

because of all the perks that come with an attractive

body. That conversation inside our heads is probably

the number one factor why the number of breast

enhancement surgeries performed around the world

is increasing by the year despite the risks involved.

The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic

Surgery (ISAPS) revealed in its latest survey that

more than 1.5 million breast enhancement surgeries

were performed worldwide in the year 2010, and

estimated that this number increased by about 20%

in 2011. Breast enhancement surgery remains the

second most popular aesthetic procedure in the world

after liposuction. These statistics come only from

surgeons around the world registered with ISAPS

and it is estimated that the actual amount of breast

enhancement surgery performed may surpass the two

million mark.

While these women satisfy their desire for a

heavier and fuller bosom, there are risks of multiple

complications that may occur which will result in

irreversible damage to the breast tissues and muscles.

Serious ramifications include ‘calcification’ - calcium

build-up in breast tissues, capsular contracture -

hardening of the breast area around the implant,

and deformity of the chest wall or the underlying rib

cage due to the weight of the implants. Unflattering

paparazzi shots of celebrities with breast implants

including Janet Jackson and Vivaca Fox reveal

implants that appear sunken from the side, a common

blunder resulting from silicon displacement in the

incorrect position of the breasts.

Physical and medical risks aside, breast

enhancement procedures can cause a deep dent in

your pockets. ISAPS’s survey records that the average

cost of a procedure is around QR 12,550 and this is not

inclusive of the after-care and clinic fees. There have

been reports in countries like China, Lebanon and

Venezuela where women would go as far as taking

personal loans just to have the procedures done. And

if just one implant is not enough, Brazilian housewife

Sheyla Hershey went to great lengths with more

than eight breast enhancement procedures and was

awarded the Brazilian equivalent of the Guinness

Book of World Records for the biggest breasts at

the size of 38KK in the year 2009. A year later, she

suffered from staph infection because of her implants

and subsequently had to remove all her implants as

well as her own breast tissue.

Even with celebrities like Pamela Anderson and

the late Anna Nicole Smith as real life examples of

breast implants gone wrong, women are still flocking

to get their breasts enhanced in hopes of achieving

beauty and sense of confidence. Pamela Anderson was

famous for her huge heaving bosoms on the shores of

Baywatch, which many medical experts say is too big

for her frame. After years of enduring the weight, she

finally underwent surgery to reduce the size of her

breasts.

Deadly consequences

The latest controversy surrounding breast

enhancement surgeries is the Poly Implant Prothese

(PIP) silicone implants that has reportedly caused

ruptures in at least two thousand patients in France. To

the rest of the world, it may be a funny news headline

Page 10: GLAM - Flexible Fashion+Whys and What Ifs

as we are reminded of slapstick jokes, but for women

with breast implants, it is their biggest nightmare

unfolding. Eight of the affected women had been

found to have cancer including one of a rare immune

system cell cancer. PIP reportedly used industrial-

grade silicone rather than medical-approved silicone

in its implants, possibly a move to increase profits

by driving down costs, causing disastrous results.

While medical-approved silicone records a 1% rate

of leakage, PIP implants has a remarkably high 11%

rate of leakage which results in serious complications

including inflammation of breasts tissue due to its

industrial content. It is no wonder that women in the

UK are taking to the streets to demand for hospitals

to replace their PIP implants with safer ones. PIP is

the only company thus far that has been discovered

in their unethical practice of substituting silicons

with unapproved materials, but what guarantee is

there that there aren’t any other implant companies

out there who are doing the same thing but yet to be

exposed?

With all these dangers lurking around the corner,

why are women still willing to undergo the knife

to alter a part of their body which is vital to the

reproduction system? The notion of perky full breasts

as part of society’s obsession with the perfect body

drives the way women look at themselves. When

confidence is derived from physical appearance rather

than from an inner place, women begin to seek all

kinds of methods to improve their outer look, breast

enhancement included.

Popular in Qatar

Here in Qatar, renowned consultant plastic surgeon Dr

Ahmed Seif Makki says that the most popular reason

for breast enhancement is to correct asymmetrical

breasts followed by desire to enlarge and enhance small

breasts and finally as post-breast cancer reconstructive

surgery. At his clinic, Plastic Surgicentre, Dr Makki

performed about 50 breast enhancement procedures

last year while Dr Kamal Husein Saleh, the consultant

cosmetic surgeon at Al-Emadi Hospital also recorded

a similar amount of breast procedures done at his

centre in 2011. Collectively, both doctors agree that

breast enhancement is one of the most popular

aesthetic procedures here in Qatar.

“There is no need for our patients to worry about

the PIP implants here in Qatar because the Supreme

Council of Health maintains a strict requirement

when it comes to medical supplies. All medical related

supplies used in clinics and hospitals are received

and examined thoroughly by the council before

being distributed. Only supplies that are approved

by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are

allowed by the council so the PIP implants would not

have been allowed into this country. If you have had

the procedure done elsewhere with a PIP implant, I

would recommend you do a thorough check-up with

your surgeon and discuss the possibilities of replacing

it with a new implant,” explains Dr. Makki.

There are various types of breast enhancement

procedures available to cater to the different needs

of patients including the most common silicone

implants, saline implants, and lipo-filling injections.

Lipo-filling or fat injection acts to plump up areas that

have lost volume as a result of surgery, injury, or aging.

The transplanted fat comes from the patient’s own

body and this procedure does not carry risk of allergic

reaction. Because of its seemingly harmless effects, fat

injection is a popular procedure in Qatar.

“Most of my patients prefer to do lipo-filling of the

breasts using their own body fat and the second most

popular procedure is the silicone breast implant. The

implants come in different quality and shapes from

different suppliers so the surgeons themselves must

choose the right one based on their own experience

to best suit the patients. Even if it means it is the

more expensive option, the safety of the patient is the

utmost priority,” Dr. Saleh says.

Prior to a breast enhancement procedure, patients

must go a thorough consultation with the doctor to

understand the process, the possible complications

and the after-care. Dr Makki explains that the

consultation would usually cover the motivations of

a patient for seeking breast enhancement, the desired

size of the enhancement and its compatibility with the

patient’s body shape and lifestyle as well as a medical

check which sometimes include a mammogram.

Dr Makki explains that the new generation silicone

implants, when inserted properly, will last for a

lifetime and would only need to be replaced if the body

goes through changes like drastic weight loss or gain

and pregnancy. When the body shape changes, the

breasts follows suit so it is important to have implants

that match the body shape for optimal results.

The PIP debacle has brought afresh the dangers

and issues surrounding breast implants and could

this take a hit at the breast enhancement industry?

Dr Makki reassures that this is an isolated case and

that the ISAPS is continuously playing its roles in two

primary functions, to ensure patients’ safety through

monitoring as well as life-long education for its

members in all development of aesthetic surgery.

“As with all things in life, there are risks. Of course

there are risks to any type of surgery but it is our duty

as doctors to minimise the risks by following all the

rules. We must provide the right patients with the

right procedures at the right facilities and the right

surgeons.” Dr Makki concludes.

On the flip side of the coin, there are plenty of

celebrities who are proud of their less curvaceous

cleavages. Hollywood A-listers Cate Blanchett, Keira

Knightley, Zoe Saldana, Tilda Swinton and Gwyneth

Paltrow are beautiful actresses that have not succumbed to the

pressure of achieving the bust size of the Marilyn Monroe ideal.

In fact, because of their slim and slender silhouettes, they have

become favourites with fashion houses as they can carry off all

the latest trends from the catwalk. There are lots of different

styles that you can experiment with for a small chest, from grungy

androgynous dressing to subtle feminine glamour. And if you ever

find the need to fill up a sexy plunging V-neck ensemble, let us

recommend some quick and painless tips...

Wearing the right undergarment

Finding the perfect bra in the right size may not be the easiest

task as our bodies are individually unique but once you have

nailed down the right one to give you the support you need, stick

to it and it will help create the fuller cleavage that you crave. A

good push-up bra does wonders by not only giving you a heavy

bosom but also helps push the fat from under the armpits to the

chest. Specialised body suits like Spanx, a body shapewear, will

also help tone the body in the long run. Some undergarments also

come with special accessories like bra clips to help with support.

Using extra padding

Why put silicone implants in your body when you can just insert

them into your bra? The innovation that hit the market about a

decade ago remains one of the most popular options to instantly

lift the breasts and create a cleavage. These silicon pads are easy

to use, either as an insert into your bra or a stick-on under your

breasts. Other than silicon, there are also a variety of bra inserts

which are designed for different outfits including swimwear and

evening wear.

Make up is not just for the face

Bronzing powder and blushers are perfect to add a little illusion

to your bosom. Pick a shade that best suits the colour of your

chest and dust it across the bosom area. Just like how you would

use a highlighter to define your nose, use the same technique in

between your breasts and you are ready to go!
