What is a glacier?

It is a mass of ice that, while moves, erodes the material that is carrying and the one over it´s sliding.

Another time the climate change plays a role

Climate is not static and a lot of factors play an important role on it

It has been changing since the existance of the Earth.

Page 5: Glaciers Presentation

Some of the factors:

-The amount of UV radiation that reaches the Earth

-The ocean currents.

Page 6: Glaciers Presentation

-The El Niño and La Niña phenomenons

Page 7: Glaciers Presentation

Which is the differrence nowdays? The speed at which the climate change is happening this time.

IT WAS EXPECTED to take place BUT NOT SO QUICKLY.

Page 8: Glaciers Presentation

Restless ice-Due to the climate and its properties we remember that glaciers are not static.

-All the glaciers in the world are retreating or advancing.

-The scientific data show that the retreat (the movement that predominates) is a consequence of the climate change as the main factor, and entails a great ice mass loss each year.

-But it has been also proved that there are some glaciers that are advancing, although there are just a few cases and are owning to local climate.

It is a pity that investing some time on the Internet one cannot find an image that corroborates that fact

Blessed ice-Thanks to the glaciers and the snow some countries has obtained a great economical benefit.

Stairs to get to Mer de Glace The illuminated ice cave

Each year it is necessary to build more stairs and to drill again the entrance to the cave because of the retreat of the glacier.

Himalaya and the Everest

Page 14: Glaciers Presentation

-Since Nepal is a poor country they need to get money from their main source.

-A mountaineer has to pay 25000$ to Nepal government to climb the Everest taking the most common route.

-About 25000 tourists visit the Everest anually.

Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics!!-The good face

Page 17: Glaciers Presentation

-The costs: 52000 million dollars

Page 18: Glaciers Presentation

-The bad face

We cannot get to any conclusión but two things are true: the green promise of this project hasn´t left any evidence and the huge cost opens the dilemma about whether this Olympic games are going to be really profitable for Russia.

The extraordinary mind of the humankind for extraordinary

situationsThe next pictures show some of the ideas that scientists all around the worl have come up with to stop or slow down climate change.-A cooling balloon that sprays water in the atmosphere.-Covering Greenland in blankets to stop the ice sheets melting.

Wait for a minute!

Isn´t easier to make everybody aware and take more policies that apply for a change in the world energy system and the other main pollutant industries?

Ohh, we would be threatening our social and economic system…

We have to keep in mind that things will never be the same, so think about if the world that you were born is the same in which you want to live.
