The field of automation issubject to a permanent andinnovative change of productsand applications. The focus ison increasing the productivityand realizing a smooth-run-ning production process witha minimum of human inter-ventions on machinery andsystems. The ideal, a fullyautomated and totally safemachine however will alwaysremain a dream, though therobots used in productionplants already are a big steptowards this goal.
Human intervention andknowledge will always berequired for the commission-ing, monitoring and mainte-nance of modern industrialsystems. Man however is notinfallible and ignorance or lackof information, thoughtless-ness or negligence oftenleads to damages.
For these reasons Europeandirectives such as theMachinery Directive 98/37/EC(2006/42/EG) and their corre-sponding standards wereimplemented at Europeanlevel. These standards aim atdetecting and constructivelyavoiding all possible risks andhazards during the planningand project phase ofmachines and systems.Safety components must beused to minimize or eliminatethe residual risks.
In this way, manufacturersand users are making equiva-lent efforts to set up an opti-mal process flow, which offersthe highest possible protec-tion to the operating staff. Thechallenge for all manufactur-ers of safety components is todesign efficient and safeproduct solutions for mechan-ical engineers. Flaps anddoors are the simplest meansof access to the machine.
These separating hardguard-ing safety solutions offer anefficient and effective protec-tion against hazardous move-ments and products beingejected from the machine. When these safety guards areopened, the machine isbrought to standstill (throughthe corresponding safety sen-sor transmitting the “stop”
A “virtual safety guard“ in theform of an active optoelec-tronic device (AOPD), e.g. asafety light curtain, is a per-fect solution, offering both anoptimal protection of humanlife and uninterrupted produc-tion process.
Introduction – Optoelectronic safety sensors
EN 61496signal to the control), whichinterrupts and therefore slowsdown the production. In caseof continuous processes, which must not be interrupt-ed, solenoid interlocks protectman and the work pieceagainst damages.
Safety fences are not suitablefor production processesrequiring the material to betransported into the workingarea by means of conveyorbelts, as it does not allow foran ergonomic and optimalwork sequence.
Depending on the application, the AOPD are used for point ofoperation, danger zone andperimeter guarding. The usercan choose from a large rangeof different optoelectronic safe-ty solutions e.g. light barriers, light grids, light curtains andlaser scanners.
The safety light barrier sys-tems of the SLB range areactive optoelectronic protec-tive devices (AOPD) fulfillingthe Control Category 2 or 4 inaccordance with EN 954-1 orEN 61496, or PLc or PLe inaccordance with EN ISO13849-1. These systems areused as entry guards on haz-ardous zones, points of oper-ation and entrances. Theyprotect human life withoutrestricting the production flow.
Typical applications for safetylight barriers are on robots,automatic-processing plants, transfer lines, rack storagesand pallet loaders. The entire safety light barriersystem includes a light emit-ter, a light receiver and a safe-ty monitoring module. Thismodule monitors the signalsof the emitter.
If the light beam is interrupt-ed, a signal is emitted to bringthe dangerous movement ofthe machine to standstill. Thesafety monitoring moduleintegrates functions such asstart and restart inhibit as wellas a contactor monitoring. The maintenance-free safetysensors of the system withprotection class IP 67 offer anintegrated soiling check.Because of their small size, safety light barriers can be fit-ted almost everywhere.
Safety light grids /light curtains
The safety light curtains andsafety light grids of the SLCand SLG meet the require-ments of Control Category 2 or4 to EN 954-1 and Type 2 orType 4 to EN 61496, or PLc orPLe in accordance with EN ISO13849-1. They safeguardpoints of operation and haz-ardous areas on different appli-cations, e.g. presses, robotstations, injection moldingmachines, pallet machines, etc.
In these active optoelectronicprotective devices (AOPD),the emitter and receiver arefitted in two separate enclo-sures. An invisible infraredsignal is sent from the emitterand monitored by the receiver. If the light beam is interruptedby an object or a person, astop signal is emitted to bringthe machine to standstill.
The protection field is definedby the height and width of theprotection field. The protectedheight is the range betweenthe first and last infrared lightbeam of a light curtain. Theprotected height defines thephysical size of the system tobe used.
The protected width or oper-ating range is the distancebetween the transmitter andreceiver unit.
For an accurate detection ofobjects with different sizes inthe hazardous area, the usercan choose between lightgrids and light curtains withdifferent resolutions. Here, thefollowing rule applies: thesmaller the distance betweentwo adjacent light beams, themore accurate the detectionsensitivity of the AOPD.For the detection of bodyparts, a distinction is madebetween finger, hand andbody protection.
EN 999 or DIN EN ISO 13857sets the biometric data for fin-ger protection to 14 mm, forhand detection to 30 mm, forleg detection up to 70 mmand for body detection to over70 mm.
Safety light grids with 2, 3or 4 individual beams aregenerally used to detect thepenetration of the entirehuman body. Safety lightcurtains are multiple beamsystems (> 5 individualbeams) and can also detectsmaller objects in case ofintrusion into the protectedfield. The maintenance- freesafety light curtains and lightgrids can be smoothly fittedusing an M12 connector andare equipped a diagnosticinterface and LED indicationfor status messages.
Depending on the type ofsafety light curtain or light gridused, the components offeran integrated monitoringmodule with start/restartinhibit and external devicemonitoring. Additional func-tions such as blanking, mut-ing and cascading of the lightcurtains are available as well.
The SLC and SLG productseries therefore offer amaximum of flexibility forsafeguarding different pointsof operation.
Important conditions forthe use of optoelectronicsafety devices:
In order to choose the appro-priate active optoelectronicprotective device (AOPD) suchas light barriers, light cur-tains/grids and laser scannersand to use them correctly, both the requirements of thestandards (EN 61496, EN 999,EN 294, C standards etc.) andproduct-specific features(detection sensitivity, range, etc.) must be taken intoaccount. AOPD’s can beused, provided that:
• the dangerous movementcan be stopped at all timesand that it is ensured thatthe dangerous area can onlybe reached after the move-ment has come to standstill,
• the dangerous movementcan be stopped at all timesand that it is ensured thatthe dangerous area can onlybe reached after the move-ment has come to standstill,
• the run-out time of themachine and all safety com-ponents is known,
• no objects (work pieces, sparks, liquids, etc.) canbe ejected,
• the AOPD meet the require-ments of Type 2 or Type 4acc. to EN 61496,
• the dangerous area can onlybe reached by passingthrough the protected field ofthe AOPD,
• reaching over, under orthrough the protected field isimpossible,
• the start or restart commanddevices are fitted in such away that the entire hazardousarea is completely visiblefrom the outside and that itcannot be activated fromwithin the hazardous area
• and the safety distance is cal-culated and constructivelyapplied in accordance withEN 999.
The effectiveness of the safetyguard corresponds to the riskassessment, which was carriedout during the planning anddesign phase, taking all impor-tant boundary conditions, e.g.environment, machine andfunction into account.
Safety distanceIf the dangerous area of themachine is accessible fromthe top because of its particu-lar construction, the height Hof the topmost beam of thelight barrier must be at least1800 mm above the base Gof the machine.
Normal approachfor light curtains:(Resolution: from 40 mmup to max. 70 mm)
The minimum safety distanceS is calculated in the followingway:
S = 1600 T + 850
The height of the topmostlight beam must be at least900 mm, the height of thelowermost light beam maxi-mum 300 mm above the bot-tom (for the protection of chil-dren younger than 14: 200mm).
Safety distances for lightcurtains
Between the interruption of alight beam and the standstillof the machine, a certain timeexpires. The safety light gridor light curtain must be sizedand installed such that a stopwould be signaled and thehazard ceased prior to a per-son or a body part accessingthe hazard.
The standard EN 999 providesthe user with detailed infor-mation about the calculationof the minimum safety dis-tances. These include thefollowing important influenc-ing factors:
• run-out time of the entiresystem, taking the differentreaction times of the individ-ual systems into account(e.g. machine, safety moni-toring module, AOPD etc.)
• capacity of the AOPD todetect body parts (fingers, hand and entire humanbody)
• set-up of the safety guard innormal condition (vertical fit-ting), parallel condition (hori-zontal fitting) or at an arbi-trary angle in front of thesafety guard and
• the speed at which the pro-tection field is approached.
For the calculation of the min-imum safety distance S to thehazardous area, EN 999 pres-ents the following general for-mula:
Where:S the safety distance to thedangerous area (mm)
K the approach speed of thebody or the body part(mm/s)
T the entire reaction time ofthe system(s) (including themachine’s run-out time, thereaction time of the safetyguard and the safety moni-toring module etc.)
C additional distance (mm) infront of the safety guard
S = K x T + C
Normal approachfor light curtains:(Resolution: max. 40 mm)
The minimum safety distanceS is calculated in the followingway:
S = 2000 T + 8 (D-14)
(D = Resolution)
This formula applies to safetydistances up to 500 mm. Theminimum safety distanceSmin may not be less than100 mm.
If the calculation produces adistance larger than 500 mmfor S, the calculation can berepeated with a lowerapproach speed:
Normal approachfor light grids:(Resolution: > 70 mm)
The minimum safety distanceS is calculated using thefollowing formula:
S = 1600 T + 850
For safety guards withmultiple beams, height H (mm)above the reference floor ofthe individual beams must beapplied in the following way:
When using light curtains orlight grids, particular attentionmust be paid to the tamperingpossibilities of the safetyguard and to the mechanicalrisks (e.g. crushing, shearing, cutting, ejection).
For the SLC/SLG…M/S prod-uct series, the master lightcurtain can be extended withanother (slave) light curtain(cascading). In this way, multi-ple protection fields can begenerated. A protection fieldis created between the emitterand receiver and between theslave components.
This device cascading pro-vides for a comfortable andefficient protection of contigu-ous protection fields againstreaching over or through theprotection field. The slavelight curtains are connected tothe master by means of anM12 connector.
The master and slave lightcurtains are available indifferent sizes and resolutionsand allow for almost any com-bination.
Muting
If goods or objects must betransported in or out of thehazardous area withoutstopping the machine, thesafety light curtain must beautomatically and temporarilysuspended.
To this end, two or four mutingsensors are used to detectwhether a person is approach-ing the hazardous area or atransport system enters orleaves the hazardous area.Suitable muting sensors arelight barriers, proximity switch-es or position switches. The integrated safety-mutingcontroller of the safety lightcurtain or light grid monitorsand controls the mutingprocess.
The safety outputs are not dis-abled. Any malfunction of themonitored signal source willcause the OSSD’s to beswitched off. Depending onthe application, different lightcurtains with integrated mutingfunction are available. Detailedproduct information can befound in this brochure frompage 33.
Blanking /Floating Blanking
If continuity of the productionprocess is required, a part ofthe protection field can beblanked without triggering astop signal. In this way, objects such aswork pieces can be fed or aconveyor belt can bepositioned at a fixed positionin the protection field.
The integrated floatingblanking function of theSLC…B light curtains enablesa flexible blanking of up to 2adjacent light beams in theprotection field of the lightcurtain. This function isrequired to ensure that one ortwo adjacent light beams canbe interrupted at an undefinedposition in the protection field.
In this way, objects such asfixtures or materials withslightly varying heights can befed through the light curtainwithout triggering a stopsignal. Different blankingfunctions are available. Thedistinguishing feature of thedifferent modes is the numberof light beams that can beinterrupted by an object. In
addition to that, it can bedefined whether the objectmay interrupt the protectionfield permanently or onlytemporarily. The interruptedlight beams can be at anyposition in the protection field.
Except the first infrared lightbeam (the beam closest to theconnector), any light beam canbe used for blanking.
When blanking is applied, theresolution of the light curtainchanges. The technicaldocumentation of the differentlight curtains includes thetables with the effectiveresolutions D to calculate theminimum safety distance toEN 999.

Safety light curtains with integrated muting-, blanking- and Cyclic-function
The SLC/SLG 415I is a sys-tem for universal use withintegrated muting function. The M8 connectors allow adirect connection and flexiblepositioning of the differentmuting sensors (e.g. induc-tive, capacitive or optical sen-sors). In this way, a safe trig-gering of the muting functioncan be obtained for objects ofdifferent sizes. The additionalintegrated override functionallows for a controlled restartof the machine to transportthe accumulated material outof the protection field after afailure. The safety light cur-tains/grids with muting func-tion enable a smooth andtrouble-free material feeding(input and output), whilstoffering a permanent protec-tion of human life.
• Integrated muting functionfor material transport in1 or 2 directions
• Connection of 2 or 4external muting sensors
• Connection of differentmuting sensors
• Direct connection (M8) ofthe muting sensors to theSLC/SLG
• Muting controller for cross-wise or parallel arrangementof the external sensors
• Adjustable muting time of30 s, 90 min or 100 h
• Integrated override function• Range up to 12 m
Cyclic operation
Cyclic operation is a modeof operation, in which themachine automatically starts awork process, as soon as theoperator releases the protec-tion zone of the light curtain.A cycle is defined as the one-time interruption and releaseof the protection zone.In one-cycle operation, a newmachine cycle is initiated, when the protection zone isinterrupted one time.
Example:The material is fed automati-cally without interruption ofthe protection zone. After ini-tialization, the machine startsthe first cycle. The operatornow interrupts the protectionzone to remove the material. The next cycle starts auto-matically.
In two-cycle operation, a newmachine cycle is started whenthe protection zone is inter-rupted twice.
Example:The operator loads themachine and gives the startcommand. After the processis finished, the operatorremoves the processed mate-rial (1st cycle) and loads anew part for processing (2ndcycle). The next cycle startsautomatically.
The light curtain additionallymonitors a signal (machinecontact) of the machine, which signals the end of thehazardous movement. Thissignal is used for the cyclereset and enables an immedi-ate intervention in the protec-tion zone.

• The control system recognises wire-breakage and earth faults in themonitoring circuit.
• Relay outputs: Suitable for 2 channelcontrol, for increase in capacity or numberof contacts by means of contactors orrelays with positive-guided contacts.
• Automatic start:The automatic start is programmed byconnecting the feedback circuit to theterminals X1/X3. If the feedback circuitis not required, establish a bridge

Safety monitoring modules for optoelectronic safety components
Start interlock:A device preventing the auto-matic release and thereforethe automatic machine startwhen the power supply ofthe AOPD is switched on orinterrupted and switched onagain.
AOPD:The abbreviation of ActiveOptoelectronic ProtectiveDevice.
Resolution:The resolution or minimumobject sensitivity representsthe minimum size of an ob-ject that is detected in eachpart of the protection field.
Optoelectronic safetydevices:The here described areoptoelectronic safety guards(AOPD), e.g. safety lightbarriers, safety light curtainsand safety light grids as wellas laser scanners and theircorresponding safety relaymodules
Type 2 acc. to EN 61496-1:The Type 2 AOPD is aprotective device, whosesafety function is checkedby means of regular tests. These devices must meetthe requirements of PLc toEN ISO 13849-1, or ControlCategory 2 acc. to EN 954-1.
Type 4 acc. to EN 61496-1:The Type 4 AOPD is a protec-tive device, whose safetyfunction is not affected by afailure or error in the system. These devices must meet therequirements of PLe to ENISO 13849-1, or ControlCategory 4 acc. to EN 954-1.
Blanking:In this configurable operationmode a safety light curtainblanks out a precisely definedarea in the protection field. The operation mode. “Blank-ing“ allows objects to bepresent in the sending areawith out deactivating the lightcurtain safety outputs. “FixedBlanking“ is when a fixed setof adjacent light beams arerendered inactive for the pur-pose of entering an objectand pans into the protectivearea. “Floating Blanking“ iswhen a set member (one ormore) of adjacent beams isallowed to ignore the pres-ence of an object and not de-activating the OSSDs of thelight curtain.
Muting:Muting is a temporaryautomatic suspension of asafeguarding function bysafety-related parts of thecontrol system duringotherwise safe conditions inthe operation of a machine. The safeguarding functionis realized through 2 or 4muting sensors, which candistinguish between personsand objects. The suspensioncondition is signalled bymeans of a muting signallamp.
OSSD:Output Signal SwitchingDevice of the AOPD(to EN 61496)
Protection field:The protection zone is aninvisible, two-dimensionallight curtain consisting ofinfrared light beams, installedbetween the emitter andreceiver unit.
Depending on the chosenresolution (detection sensitivi-ty) objects of a specific sizeintruding this light curtain willbe detected.
Operating Range:The operating range is themaximum distance that mayexit between the light cur-tain’s emitter and its receiver.
Protected height:The protected height is avertical area between the firstand the last infrared lightbeam of an optoelectronicsafety guard (not the totalhousing length).
The beginning and the endof this area is marked withsymbols on the SLC/SLG’senclosure.
Restart interlock:A device preventing the auto-matic restart of the machine, when the protection field isinterrupted during a danger-ous machine cycle or whenthe operating mode of themachine is set or changed.
