PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear families,

Farewell Jane Next Wednesday, 20th September will be Jane Davies’ last day in the canteen. Jane has been working in the canteen as the manager over the past 5 years and we appreciate her efficiency in preparing lunches and her care for the students at Gisborne PS. Jane has capably done all the ordering and supervision of volunteers, with the assistance of our regular volunteer, Cheryl. Jane’s son Bradley is in Yr 6 so this will also be Jane’s last year as a parent at Gisborne PS. We wish Jane all the best in her new work directions.

Out of Hours School Care To address this high need area we will be accepting ‘Expressions of Interest’ proposals from providers until next Tuesday, 19th September at 4pm. We have had interest from two providers and will relay further information early next term as we work through this process, being mindful that parents will need to make arrangements for next year.

Music Recital and School Concert. Last Friday night around 100 families were in the audience at the GSC Barcham Theatre to enjoy the annual evening of instrumental music, singing and dance. Students in the school choir, dance group and those learning flute, piano and keyboard provided an entertaining hour of music. The students had the opportunity to rehearse in the afternoon in front of the students. Thank you to Kate Kuyateh for organising the evening and leading the choir and marimba ensemble, Bec Underwood for leading the dance group and all the instrumental music teachers for preparing the students to perform. We will be holding our end-of-year school concert on Wednesday, 20th December in the gym. Given the limited space and the potential heat, there will be two short 45 minute sessions showcasing the choir, marimba ensemble and year level items. 9am – Yrs F-3; 10am Yrs 4-6.

Yoga and Guitar Next term a five week yoga program is being offered in the BER during a lunch time. Please return the flyer and contact Kerri if you have any questions. There are still several places available in the class. Kerri is a qualified yoga instructor and Justine Elliott has kindly offered to supervise the classes. A guitar program is also starting on Thursday evenings. Please contact the office for details.

Raising Concerns. Last week the ‘Raising Concerns’ flyer was attached to the newsletter and today you will find our BullyStopper protocols. We will be discussing these with new families from next term and would like some feedback from parents/carers about how effectively these clarify how to raise a concern with their child’s teacher or to let the school know if their child is experiencing bullying. If you have any feedback, please email me with your comments.

Have a great weekend.

CHALK TALK

Dear families, Last week we celebrated Literacy and Numeracy Week. Along with the usual Literacy and Numeracy program, each class had an extra focus on these areas, looking at authors and different text types, and engaging in a variety of numeracy activities including measuring and tasks linked to real life scenarios. Thank you to Melanie Hunter and Bree Scott for their organisation. The whole school graph for the students’ favourite authors looks great. The graph is in the office area; please have a look if you have time. Last week we shared the Concerns and Complaints Procedure. This week we have the Bullying Protocol Procedure to share with the community. The purpose of this document is to advise what steps to follow if you feel your child is being bullied. Please find the Bullying Protocol Procedure document attached to the newsletter. As part of our School Wide Positive Behaviour Support Approach, our first step was to develop school values, which were announced in our newsletter last week. The next step is to create a Behaviour Matrix for expected behaviours across the school. Staff have worked on a matrix for attending assembly. Please find this attached to the newsletter. The Prep 2018 Transition Program will commence early Term 4. The dates are: October 27th, November 17th, December 1st and State Wide Transition Day on December 12th. Further information will be provided in the coming weeks.

There are many families who are affected by cancer every day and as a school we would like to support this cause and these families. If you would like any further information, support materials or to personally donate, please follow the link. http://www.thekidscancerproject.org.au/about-us/childhood-cancer-awareness-month Some facts:

Felicity Purcell has commenced her family leave and 2C will be in the experienced hands of Jo Goodwin on Fridays in Term 4.

We wish Felicity the best and Jo is looking forward to working with Carla Dodd and the students of 2C.

Regards, Lisa Maxwell

This month is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. To support this cause, the students will be given the opportunity to wear yellow or gold accessories to school next week in exchange for a gold coin donation. Accessories can be: hair ribbons/bows, a headband, scarf, yellow socks, or even arm bands. Please note uniform still needs to be worn and we ask for no hairspray please.

Footy Day: On Friday 22nd September, the last day of Term 3, students are invited to dress in their footy gear (or favourite

sports gear) to celebrate the end of the football season and the upcoming AFL Grand Final. Please note that this year there

will not be a pie/hotdog day as the canteen will be closed.

PARENT/TEACHER INTERVIEWS Parent/Teacher Interviews are being held next Tuesday 19th September. In previous years, when interviews have gone over their 10 minute time allocation, the entire schedule for parents gets disrupted. This year, in an attempt to avoid this occurring, teachers will be setting a timer at the beginning of each interview. When the timer rings at the end of the 10 minute interview, if you require further discussions, please conclude the interview and email the teacher to arrange another time. We thank you in advance for your cooperation & understanding. Interview bookings can be made on the Sentral Parent Portal until 12pm on Tuesday 19th September. Please do not book consecutive appointments, leave at least a 10 minute gap between interviews if you are seeing more than one teacher. If you are new to the school, you should have received a letter with details on how to register for the Sentral Parent Portal. Please do not hesitate to contact the school office if you have any problems with the registration process.

Permission for each activity need only be given once; should you complete permission online (this is our preference), there is no need to return the hard copy form. Hard copy notes will continue to be provided this term until parents get used to completing the online permission. In Term 4, permissions will be online only. ABSENCE NOTIFICATIONS The Sentral Parent Portal ‘Messages’ tab can be used to notify the school of student absences (this is now our preferred method). Families are able to explain a prior absence or advise of an upcoming absence. You can even advise of a late arrival, early departure, or a timed absence during the day. Simply select the date/s of the absence and advise us of times and the reason in the comments section. Once your notification has been sent, the absence will be processed by the school, usually within 48 hours.
