Leaders Announce Formation of World Geospatial Industry Council

In a historic development, worldwide geospatial industry leaders have come together to announce the formation of the World Geospatial Industry Council (WGIC). The official announcement and introduction

of the council was made on Aug. 1 at the 8th session of the UN-GGIM (United Nations Global Geospatial Information Management) by Jack Dangermond, founder and CEO of Esri and chairman of the WGIC.

“With WGIC, we have the vision to create a new institution that brings together participants from around the world in the geospatial industry. This will allow new kinds of partnerships to emerge, enabling companies to help each other, and will also allow the geospatial industry to collectively work with big global initiatives

such as the World Bank and the UN,” Dangermond stated.

The WGIC, as it intends to be known, aspires to be a collaborative platform for advancing the role of the geospatial industry and strengthening its contribution in the world economy and society. The organization endeavors to facilitate the exchange of knowledge within the geospatial industry and co-create larger business opportunities for the industry. With policy restraints limiting private sector participation and commercialization, WGIC also seeks to raise awareness among policy makers and advocate for a better environment and investments in the geospatial sector.

WGIC has been created and co-founded by a group of 21 companies, named in alphabetical order: AAM

Group, AGI India, Autodesk, Bentley Systems, Cyient, Data World, DigitalGlobe (a Maxar Technologies

company), e-GEOS, Esri, FARO, Geospatial Media, GeoTech Vision, Ground Truth, Hexagon, IIC

Technologies, Oracle, RIEGL, Rolta Group, Trimble, To mTo m and Topcon. Additionally, the WGIC will

be opening up membership options in approximately one month for other interested geospatial companies.

Esri Announces New Indoor Mapping Product: ArcGIS Indoors

Esri has announced that it will release ArcGIS Indoors, which will enable interactive indoor mapping of corporate facilities, retail and commercial locations, airports, hospitals, event venues, universities, and more. By applying the latest location technology, ArcGIS Indoors makes life easier for employees, customers, travelers, and visitors by allowing them to see and share where assets, rooms, departure gates, and offices are located. This information, combined with navigation, scheduling, and analytic capabilities, will allow buildings to operate at an increased level of efficiency and safety.

ArcGIS Indoors uses data streams, real-time processing, and location intelligence tools to help businesses and other organizations understand how to better coordinate space and other resources with their facilities and campuses. Insights from sensor networks deliver real-time information to managers and executives through interactive dashboards, while visitors and employees can find useful information about the buildings they occupy. Floor-aware, 3D maps allow building operators and occupants to quickly access and explore critical business information, like the location and status of fire extinguishers and their last inspection dates, or conference rooms and their projector options.

“ArcGIS Indoors brings the interior building space into the future by placing data about employees, schedules, meetings, customers, and events into a geographic context,” said Nitin Bajaj, product manager at Esri. “Having spatial awareness gives executives, managers, and employees better insight so they can operate more efficiently and competitively.”

ArcGIS Indoors will be available for widespread use by the end of the year. However, a beta version of the

product was released at this year’s Esri User Conference, held on July 9–13 at the San Diego Convention

Center in San Diego, California.

4 Reasons to Consider GIS as a Career Choosing a college major is often a difficult decision, so it is important to weigh certain components of your future

career. Discovering what interests you and what also makes you a decent wage are two aspects that are crucial in

your decision. However, if you love to work with technology, interpret data, and explore maps, then making a choice is

easier than you think. Here are a few reasons to consider a career in GIS (geographic information systems).

1. CHANCE TO EXPLORE THE GREAT OUTDOORS Because surveying is the main tool for gathering GIS information, a

substantial amount of the work is done outside. For those of you that

are avid lovers of the outdoors, GIS allows you to complete work out

in the field, rather than sitting behind a desk for hours on end. The

possibilities are seemingly endless.

2. POTENTIAL JOB PROSPECTS

After acquiring a GIS certificate, a door opens that enables you to choose a variety of career options. Most people who

obtain a certificate in the field opt to become a GIS technician whose duty is to make maps on computers by compiling

and manipulating data. However, it is not the only career path. Other people with this degree choose jobs in surveying,

cartography, and drafting.

3. COMPETITIVE SALARIES IN A GROWING FIELD

Salaries and job growth in GIS continue to expand as the federal government and private companies pour more money

into their information systems technology. For a typical GIS professional, annual salaries range from BHD 15,120 to

BHD 21,168 a year depending on the specific job title. However, those that choose to obtain a master’s degree often

bump their average pay up to an average of BHD 28,260, according the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Job growth is also

a perk of GIS graduates as rates are anywhere from 10 percent to 29 percent, which is faster than the national average

for all other occupations. The majority of these jobs are also government-funded, meaning benefits such as insurance

and pension are at a premium.

4. MAKE A DIFFERENCE

The data accumulated and mapped by GIS professionals have an array of uses inside and outside of the actual GIS

world. Many companies integrate this information into everyday tasks. If a company wants to map the wind patterns

of a particular area to determine where to build a wind farm, you’re the person for the job. If a company wants to

complete a GPS map for a new area or a foreign country, you’re the one that travels there and compiles the data. No

matter what job you are doing, you are making a difference to consumers and changing the future. Considering GIS

as a career is something that takes time and a careful thought process.
