Introduction
a. Requirements for special purpose applications of steam turbines in the petroleum, petrochemical, and natural gas industries are based on ISO 10437 (2003). ISO 10437 isequivalent to API Std 612, sixth edition, November 2005.
b. Requirements of this GIS are modifications to ISO 10437.
c. Modifications to ISO 10437 are defined as Add, Delete, or Modify to Read.
d. Paragraph numbers in this GIS correspond to ISO 10437.
e. Paragraphs of ISO 10437 that are not revised remain applicable.

5 Statutory requirements

6 Basic design
6.1 General
6.1.1 Add
Turbines shall be sufficiently robust to withstand, without damage, results of occasionalabnormal conditions of limited duration, such as surging of compressors or electrical faults ongenerators.
6.1.2 Modify to Read
a. Turbine vendor
1. For electric power generation applications, turbine vendor shall be responsible forcoordination of design and for satisfactory functioning of complete unit (i.e., turbine,generator, transmission, and ancillaries).
2. Turbine vendor that supplies equipment which it has not manufactured shall, in allrespects, be responsible for ensuring that designs of such items are compatible with
each other and with turbine vendor equipment.
3. Satisfactory functioning of complete unit shall form part of turbine vendor contractualguarantee.
b. For other applications, driven equipment vendor should normally be responsible for overallcoordination. Turbine vendor shall cooperate with driven equipment vendor to facilitate
development of complete unit.

1. Uncoupled or unloaded operation shall undergo a safety review of the operating procedure (especially of overspeed protection).
2. The safety review shall be completed before the operating procedure is performed.
This applies to factory testing and site installations.
6.1.15 Modify to Read

6.2 Nameplate and rotation arrows
6.2.5 Add
a. All rotor responses, regardless of amplification factor (AF), shall also be stamped on thenameplate. If necessary, a separate critical speed nameplate shall be furnished.
b. Equipment weights shall be stamped on equipment tag. This weight shall include turbine,
complete with cover, rotor, and diaphragms.
7 Casings
7.1 Pressure casings
7.1.1 Add
a. Casing shall be suitable for pressures and temperatures encountered if running uncoupled
with design inlet steam conditions.
b. Actual maximum allowable pressure and temperature for mechanical strength purposesshall be stated on the data sheet.

7.3 Internal stationary components
7.3.2 Add
Diaphragms for multistage steam turbines shall be individually secured to prevent axialmovement.

7.3.5 Latter stages of condensing turbines shall have drip rims to protect the casing from erosion.
7.4 External forces and moments
Add
a. Allowable forces and moments for each casing connection shall be tabulated by turbine
vendor.
b. Vendor shall demonstrate that tabulated forces and moments comply with equations for the
resultant and combined resultant forces and moments described in NEMA SM23.
8 Rotating elements
8.2 Shafts
8.2.2 Modify Last Sentence to Read
These areas shall be demagnetised or otherwise treated such that combined total electrical andmechanical runout does not exceed the following:
a. 6 μm (0,25 mil) for areas observed by radial vibration probes.
b. 13 μm (0,5 mil) for areas observed by axial position probes.
8.2.4 Modify Second Sentence to Read
Shaft ends for couplings shall comply with GIS 34-503.

Add8.2.6 a. Turbine vendor shall, together with driven equipment vendor, establish maximum transient
torques that will occur in shafting system during startup, running, and fault conditions.
b. All components, including coupling and fit of coupling hub on shaft, shall be suitable for atleast 115% of the maximum transient torques in a.
8.3 Blading
8.3.1 Modify First Sentence to Read
Each blade row shall be verified by Vendor using Campbell diagrams or their equivalent(corrected to actual operating temperatures and speeds), for both nozzle passing frequency and by twice nozzle passing frequency, that excitation does not occur within the range of 90%minimum speed to 110% maximum continuous speed for all multiples of up to 15 times runningspeed.
Add8.3.3 a. Blading that could be in a transition zone between dry and wet regions, under any
operating conditions, shall be conservatively designed with low working stresses.
b. It shall be assumed that chlorides could be present, and fatigue strength of bladingmaterials shall be selected accordingly (see 11.1.6).
8.3.4 a. Blading shall have been proven in service.
b. Satisfactory operating experience with each blade profile and height shall be demonstrated.
c. Vendor shall state whether response frequencies have been substantiated by static orrotating tests.
8.3.5 Vendor shall advise on operating constraints imposed by blading (e.g., limits on extraction,induction and exhaust pressures, temperatures, and flow rates).
9 Rotor dynamics
9.1 General
9.1.2 Modify to Read
Resonance conditions shall be reported to BP, regardless of the amplification factor.
9.2 Lateral analysis
9.2.5 Add
Add9.2.12 a. A level 1 stability analysis shall be performed by the Vendor in accordance withAPI Publ 684 to demonstrate that self excited vibration will not occur under any loadingcondition.
b. Assumptions regarding magnitude of excitations from oil film, aerodynamic, and othersources shall be stated.

9.5 Torsional analysis
9.5.1 Add
Turbine vendors that are responsible for overall coordination shall perform a torsional vibrationanalysis of the complete coupled train (see 6.1.2).
9.5.2 Add
i) surge of compressors.
9.5.3 Add
For generator drive applications, lowest torsional resonance of complete train shall be at least30% below frequency of electrical system.
9.6 Vibration and balancing
9.6.3 Add
Balancing procedures shall be such that rotor and coupling interchangeability can be achieved
without need for rebalancing. This requires rotors to be first balanced without couplings andsubsequently check balanced with coupling hubs mounted.
9.6.4 Add
a. If high speed balancing is specified, the rotor shall be run to 127% of rated operating speedto demonstrate its integrity in accordance with 12.3.1.1.
b. If low speed balancing is specified, Vendor shall provide assurance that rotor integrity willnot be compromised at 127% rated operating speed.
9.6.6 Modify to Read
A rotor that will be high speed balanced shall first receive a sequential, low speed balance asspecified in 9.6.2.
9.6.7 Delete
Delete “if specified”.

High speed balanced rotors shall also receive a residual balance check.
10 Bearings, bearing housings, and seals
10.1 Radial bearings
10.1.1 Add
a. Bearing design shall be such that bearings can only be installed correctly. Bearing shall bemarked as to its location.
b. For mechanical drive applications, radial bearings shall be capable of withstanding reverserotation for short periods of time without damage.

10.1.3 Bearing metal temperatures shall not exceed 90°C (194°F).

10.2 Thrust bearings and collars
10.2.1 Add
a. Thrust bearings shall be designed such that they can only be installed correctly.
b. For mechanical drive applications, thrust bearings shall be capable of withstanding reverse
rotation for short periods of time without damage.10.2.2 Add
a. Bearing metal temperatures shall not exceed 90°C (194°F).
b. The limit in a. shall apply for maximum thrust conditions and maximum continuous speed,with design clearances.
10.2.5 Add
a. Maximum face unit loading shall be 1 400 kPa (200 psi), including coupling thrust, basedon clean blading at all points in operating range.
b. Graphic display of speed against maximum load capacity that shows boundaries defined by
the following criteria shall be submitted:
1. Minimum oil thickness for continuous operation.
2. Maximum bearing lining temperature for continuous operation.
3. Fatigue or mechanical limit for bearing or its lining material.
c. This graph shall also indicate maximum continuous and transient loads applied to bearings.
10.3 Bearing housing
10.3.1 Add
Bearing housings shall have connections for breathers or vents.
10.3.2 Add
a. Provisions for air or nitrogen buffering shall be made.
b. Buffering shall be designed to purge oil labyrinths with axial velocity of 4,5 m/s to 6,0 m/s(15 ft/s to 20 ft/s). Allowance should be made for wear to two times design clearance.
10.3.5 Modify to Read
a. Provision shall be made for mounting two noncontacting radial vibration probes in each
bearing housing, three axial position probes at the thrust end of each machine, and a oneevent per revolution probe in each machine.
b. Probe installation shall comply with GIS 34-705.
10.3.6 Add
10.4 Grounding

a. A monitoring circuit shall be provided to alarm on brush failure.
b. Brush shall be suitable for reverse rotation.
10.5 Shaft seals
10.5.1 Add
a. Outer gland packing shall be replaceable without disturbing top half of turbine casing.

b. Labyrinth packing “teeth” shall be on replaceable packing elements. Shaft sleeves withintegral teeth shall not be supplied.

11 Materials
11.1 General
11.1.1 Add
a. Bearing housings adjacent to couplings and using semicircular mounting flange shall besteel or steel alloy.
b. Bearing housing brackets shall be steel or steel alloy if attached to a steel turbine case.
11.1.6 Add
11.1.10 Add
Unless approved otherwise by BP, steam path components, excluding valve seats, valve plugs,
bushings, and stems, shall be 22 HRC, maximum.
11.3 Welding
11.3.1 Add
If evidence of BP approved welding procedures cannot be provided, welding procedures shall be subject to BP approval prior to fabrication.
12 Controls and instrumentation
12.1 General
Add
a. Instrumentation and control equipment required to monitor and sequence turbine through
startup, operation, and shutdown shall be furnished.
b. Electrical equipment and instrumentation shall comply with GP 12-45 and GP 30-70.
c. Machinery protection systems shall comply with GIS 34-705.
12.3 Overspeed shutdown system
12.3.1 General
12.3.1.1 Add
Vendor shall demonstrate (by calculation or otherwise) that the system response time will allowcompliance with this clause (refer to 12.3.4.7).
12.3.2 Electronic overspeed detection system
12.3.2.1 Modify to Read
a. An overspeed shutdown system based on 2oo3 voting logic shall be furnished.
b. System shall have three independent channels, an uninterruptible power source, and self
diagnostic facilities.

12.6 Indicating instrumentation
12.6.4 Thermocouples and resistant temperature detectors

12.6.4.1 Thermocouples and resistance temperature detectors should be connected to instrument junction boxes or be otherwise suitably terminated.
12.6.4.2 a. Vibration and axial position monitoring systems shall comply with GIS 34-705.
b. Completed API 670, Appendix A, data sheet shall be provided.
12.6.4.3 a. Bearing temperature monitors shall be supplied and calibrated in accordance withGIS 34-705.
b. If space allows, each sensor shall have installed spare (not duplex).
c. Sensors shall be securely fixed in intimate contact with bearing metal and located at bearing “hot spot”.
d. Type of thermocouple or resistance temperature detector (RTD) shall be subject to BPapproval.
14 Piping and appurtenances
14.1 General
14.1.1 Modify to Read
Piping design, fabrication, examination, and inspection shall comply with GP 42-10 andGIS 34-701.
14.1.3 Modify to Read
Gaskets shall be spiral wound, centering guide (CG) type, and type 304 SS with flexiblegraphite filler.

14.1.5 Winterisation
a. If winterisation is required, mutual provisions shall be made for:
1. Protection against freezing of gages and small piping.
2. Supplying heat (oil circulation) to provide proper oil temperature for startup of pressure lubrication systems.
b. In all cases, complete drainage shall be provided for the turbine, auxiliary equipment,steam, water, and oil lines.
15 Accessories
15.1 Couplings and guards
15.1.2 Modify First Sentence to ReadCouplings and guards shall comply with GIS 34-503.
15.2 Gear units
Modify to Read
Gear units shall comply with GIS 34-501.
15.3 Mounting plates
15.3.1 General
15.3.1.2 AddTurbine feet shall have vertical jackscrews installed in a location outside of the shimming area.
15.3.1.3 Add
a. Size and number of jackscrews shall comply with levelling requirements in 15.3.1.6.
b. Levelling jackscrew hole size shall be at least 16 mm (5/8 in).
c. Levelling jackscrew holes shall be drilled and tapped a length equal to or greater than jackscrew diameter.
d. Levelling jackscrew holes shall be at least 100 mm (4 in) away from anchor bolt holes.
15.3.1.6 Modify to Read
a. Mounting plates shall be machined parallel within 0,042 mm per linear m (0,5 mil perlinear ft) of mounting surface.
b. Elevation difference between mounting plates under a single piece of machinery shall be
within 0,127 mm (0,005 in), maximum.
c. Surface finish shall be 3 μm (125 μin) arithmetic average roughness (Ra). Equipmentmounting surfaces on fabricated baseplates shall also comply with this requirement.
15.3.1.12 Add
a. Peelable or laminated shims, step shimming, or tapered shims shall not be used.
b. The maximum number of shims per support point shall be three.

15.3.2 Baseplates

a. If equipment is mounted on a baseplate and no machine surface is available for 150 mm(6 in) level to determine baseplate levelness, 75 mm by 75 mm (3 in by 3 in) levelling
targets or machined flats shall be provided.
b. Targets or flats shall be adjacent to each anchor bolt location.
15.3.3 Soleplates and subplates

d) Vertical levelling jackscrew holes shall be located in each soleplate corner.
e) Soleplates longer than 1 m (3 ft) shall have additional jackscrew holes aligned with corner jackscrew holes such that spans between jackscrew holes on each side of soleplate are evenand at least 1 m (3 ft).
15.5 Lubrication and control-oil system
15.5.4 Modify to Read
Pressurised oil systems shall comply with GIS 34-701.

15.5.7 Type of water removal device that is specified shall be mutually agreed upon with Vendor tomaintain moisture levels within its specified limits.
15.7 Insulation and jacketing

a. Turbines shall be insulated and should be jacketed. b. Insulation and jacketing shall extend over portions of the turbine casing that may reach a
normal operating temperature of 65°C (149°F) or higher.
15.7.2 Modify to Read
a. Insulation surface temperature shall not exceed 65°C (149°F) under normal operatingconditions.
b. Jackets and insulation shall be designed to minimise potential damage during removal andreplacement.
15.8 Turning gear
15.8.1 Modify to Read
a. It shall be possible to quickly restart the turbine without delay after shutdown of any
duration. A turning gear shall be supplied, if necessary, to meet this requirement.
b. Slow roll to remove the shaft bow prior to restart shall not be an acceptable substitute for aturning gear.
15.8.4 Add
Automatic engagement shall not occur in the event of reverse rotation following a trip.
15.8.6 Modify Second Sentence to Read
Consideration shall be given to:

a. Vendor shall provide a speed amplitude curve for each radial probe plane. This curve willshow:
1. Critical speeds below operating speed.
2. The next critical speed above operating speed.
b. The critical speeds (including responses at 2.5 AF and below) shall be identified as tomode.
c. If the trip speed of the turbine is above or encroaches upon critical speed (includingresponses at 2.5 AF and below), a modal response plot for the rotor operating at each suchcritical speed shall be provided, showing the orbits of at least the following points along
the rotor:
1. Shaft ends.
2. Bearing centrelines.
3. Probe plains.
4. Casing seals.
5. All interstage seals.
d. Each orbit shall show phase and amplitude of the major axis.
e. Maximum and minimum design clearances at each of the points mentioned in c. shall beshown.
f. Response plots shall be prepared for maximum and minimum bearing clearances.
g. Critical speeds (including responses with 2.5 AF and lower) below operating speeds shall be shown with maximum allowable unbalance.
h. Critical speeds within or encroaching upon operating speeds shall be shown using fivetimes the maximum allowable unbalance.
