was taken hostage by whalers last year. He recalls his ordeal… “We went on one of our outboard boats to give a letter to the captain of one of the whaling vessels,” he says. “When we climbed aboard, we were seized. My heart was pounding because at fi rst they tried to throw me overboard. Then they tied us up and took us inside. It was a worrying situation, but I’m certainly prepared to do something similar again.” Benjamin was rescued after the Australian Government sent a fast boat to collect him from the whalers.

5pm More commotion at the bow of the ship – Discovery HD’s crew are fi lming dolphins. “We have a fi lm crew of eight people,” says cameraman Ash Dunn, who also fi lmed last year’s mission. “Our cameras are high defi nition, so for HD viewers the clarity will be amazing. Down in the Antarctic it’s pretty hard to get a bad shot with the scenery, the icebergs, the light. HD picks up the detail of the whales, too. Last time, we got

some amazing footage of whales breaching the water. As a fi lm crew, though, we’re defi nitely passengers on this ship – we don’t have a say, so we just have to strap in and see what happens!”

7pm The boat is rocking harder – a couple of the crew are starting to get seasick. But this is nothing compared to what they’ll experience in the Antarctic. “If you get sick down there, don’t retreat to your cabin thinking you’re going to die – because it might just happen!” warns Peter Brown.

Sat 6 December 12noon We’re all on deck as a police escort arrives to guide the ship into port at Newcastle to pick up supplies. As I prepare to leave and the crew steel themselves to face up to the whalers, Peter Hammarstedt

reveals his hopes for the impact of Whale Wars. “Our boat is only 60 metres long and 11 metres wide,” he says. “But Whale Wars gives us the opportunity to take millions of people on board with us. We can send a message around the world that if we don’t take individual responsibility, the exploitation and destruction of our ocean habitats will not end.”

12.30pm I leave a crew that is clearly feeling bullish and in high spirits, but there’s still a strong sense of anticipation of the tough trials that lie ahead. Leaving the warm Australian climate behind, they’ll face the fi erce extremes of Antarctic weather and seas, the isolation and deprivation of living at sea for months without everyday comforts, facing potential danger from whalers strongly opposed to their interference.

The Sea Shepherd’s tactics may be controversial, but it’s clear to me that without their bravery and dedication, there would be far fewer whales in the oceans.■ FOR MORE INFO, VISIT SEASHEPHERD.ORG

≠ What’s hot on the high street doesn’t always translate to your home, so don’t rush out and buy a load of paint and furnishings. my top tip is to take time to plan your revamp. Re-designing a

room is like getting ready for a wedding – before you get the hat and the jewellery, you need to get in shape, think about

your outfit and then buy the accessories. ≠ i’m a great believer in a spring clean. Take a look at a room

and see if something’s not working. is that
