PRO BONO + CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

PRO BONO

The Firm believes that lawyers have a responsibility to ensure the legal system is fair, equitable and accessible to all.

In 1996, Gilbert + Tobin was the first law firm in Australia to appoint a full-time in-house pro bono lawyer. We are a proud advocate of social justice and focus on providing advice and support to marginalised and disadvantaged clients and the organisations that work with them. The practice covers many diverse areas of law including discrimination, administrative law, defamation and public international law. Pro bono work at Gilbert + Tobin is particularly focused on issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, refugees, people with disabilities and the protection of human rights.

CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITYGilbert + Tobin is committed to acting in a socially and environmentally responsible way. Since 2007 the Firm has operated a formal corporate social responsibly practice in addition to its pro bono work. Gilbert + Tobin’s Corporate Social Responsibility program incorporates three areas – promoting and supporting reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians, contributing to our community and reducing environmental impact.

Promoting and supporting reconciliation with Indigenous Australians has been part of the fabric of the firm since its inception. We also participate in a range of community activities with a particular focus on mentoring and skills-transfer and we consistently work to improve our environmental performance.

RECONCILIATIONGilbert + Tobin is passionate about reconciliation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and believes in demonstrating this commitment in real and practical ways. The Firm has had a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) since 2008 and continually strives to develop it.

Gilbert + Tobin is committed to achieving practical steps towards reconciliation, including:

+ 30% of pro bono work is to be undertaken on behalf of Indigenous individuals and organisations.

+ Cadetship program for Indigenous law students.

+ Indigenous employment program. + Mentoring program for first year

Indigenous law students at Sydney universities.

+ Indigenous cultural awareness training for all staff.

+ Extensive contemporary Indigenous art program.

+ Participating in National Reconciliation Week on an annual basis.

+ Financial support for organisations supporting Indigenous peoples including Just Reinvest, Shine for Kids, the Cape York Girl Academy and Tribal Warrior Association.

+ Hosting visits from Indigenous high school students, especially from the University of NSW Indigenous Winter School and pre-law program.

+ Supporting Indigenous economic development by procuring products from Indigenous businesses certified by Supply Nation.

“The Wills project is about using our legal skills in a preventative way. Instead of trying to resolve disputes after a person dies, we provide assistance to avoid any disputes arising. Only around 6% of Indigenous people have Wills against more than 50% of the population as a whole, yet over 85% of burial disputes in the last 20 years involved Indigenous families.” Anne Cregan, Pro Bono Partner

Gilbert + Tobin won the Pro Bono Partnership Award at the 2017 Justice Awards, for a unique project delivered in collaboration with Moree’s Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) and the Dharriwaa Elders Group.
