Get into the Christmas spirit on Friday evening, Dec. 2, when Night of Lights illuminates Half Moon Bay’s downtown for the 12th time. Be ready: Main Street will close at 6 p.m. in advance of the annual holiday parade at 7 p.m. Before the parade gets underway, look for the annual tree-lighting ceremony at Mac Dutra Park.
A young Prince and Princess, nominated by teachers, will lead a stream of floats. You know Santa Claus will be there. After the parade, look for him at the Coastside.net office on Main Street.
After the parade, stroll up and down Main Street soaking in the holiday ambience. Holiday music will come from carolers and musical ensembles like the Half Moon Bay Sit-Down Band, the Scottish Fiddlers at La Piazza, and other surprises. The street will sparkle with Christmas trees donated by Santa’s Tree Farm, and stores up and down the way will have their doors open wide to greet shoppers with holiday treats and arrays of possible gifts.
As usual, kids can have holiday fun while parents shop, at a special children’s area sponsored by the Boys and Girls Club of the Coastside, local schools and nonprofits. You can also get the taste of the holidays with hot cocoa, chestnuts roasting over an open fire, and other goodies.
Night of Lights is brought to you by the Half Moon Bay Coastside Chamber of Commerce and Visitors’ Bureau, and the Boys and Girls Club among other “Gold Tree” sponsors.

F or the 26th year, Coastside Hope’s Adopt-a-Family will make sure the holidays are bright for Coastsiders regardless of their financial need. The program pairs generous local residents willing to pay for and shop for items on the wish lists of deserving local families and seniors.
About 400 people will benefit from the program thanks to 1,500 volunteers from Pescadero to Montara. Giving Coastisders typically spend between $50 and $60 per
family member and deliver the goods to the Adopt-a-Family hub at 214 Harvard Ave., in Princeton. Some simply write a check and let others do the shopping; others are “elves,” wrapping and sorting as the gifts arrive.
It all starts in October when Adopt-a-Family volunteers began interviewing prospective recipient families. The interviews were concluded in about a month, and families and seniors were matched with holiday-minded Coastsiders who shopped for them.
The warehouse that as been home to Adopt-a-Family for more than a decade will open on Nov. 27 for the small army of wrappers to begin rustling paper and ribbons and trading holiday cheer. That same day, gift distribution will also begin.
Want to do something really special this year? Sign up for “Special Delivery.” The program provides local families in need with basic provisions that aren’t readily available through food programs — things like soap, shampoo and toilet paper. Donors commit to shop once a month for their adopted family at a cost of about $35 per shopping trip. To learn more about Special Delivery, write [email protected].
Adopt-a-Family organizers welcome donations of money, and volunteers to adopt, shop or wrap. Call Judy at (650) 563-9910 or 563-9706. If you think you may qualify for services, call 726-9071.

The lawn in front of Our Lady of the Pillar Catholic Church will be alive with biblical imagery when, for the 24th year, the Live Nativity Scene is set up in December.
In two-hour shifts from Dec. 17 through the Feast of the Epiphany on Jan. 8, 2012, volunteers will portray Mary, Joseph, three kings and three shepherds. The woman portraying Mary cradles a doll representing the infant Jesus. Adding realism to the scene in a shack next to the Kelly Avenue church will be a donkey, a goat and a sheep on loan from a
neighboring farmer.Organizers say it isn’t unusual to see passersby pause to reflect on the Christmas story, some even
stepping out of their cars to kneel in prayer outside the scene. This year, Mel Schwing, who founded the local tradition, plans to call on area celebrities to participate. Don’t be surprised to see local politicians and other notables in key roles. Schwing is transitioning this year, turning over the reins to Oscar Braun.
The event is sponsored by the local Knights of Columbus, many of whom stand in the scene. The schedule is as follows, with some of the scenes including Mass at the church: 2 to 4 p.m. and 4:30
to 6:30 p.m. Dec. 17; 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Dec. 18, and noon the same day; 5 to 7 p.m. Dec. 19, 20, 21, 22 and 23; 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. Dec. 24, and from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and at noon on Dec. 25. It ends with 10 a.m. and noon scenes on Epiphany.
The scenes on Christmas and Dec. 18 will feature Spanish-speaking actors in the roles and the scene on Dec. 19 will feature Portuguese actors. Organizers recruited representatives from those local communities to help with those scenes.
If you want to participate or want more information, call Schwing at 726-6765 or Braun (650) 867-5779.

A s always, the Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay, will be all dolled up for the Christmas holidays.
It all begins Dec. 6, when the eighth annual Gingerbread House contest takes place. From candy-
covered castles to confectioners cottages, the contest features all kinds of gingerbread structures trimmed with treats. From children to home cooks to culinary professionals, everyone has been welcome to give free rein to their architectural skills when it comes to gingerbread houses.
The results will be displayed in the hotel lobby through Dec. 10, and up for bid in a silent auction which will benefit children’s programs on the Coastside. Call 712-7007.
The winners will be announced during the holiday
tree-lighting celebration. This festivity takes place from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10, in the hotel’s Gazebo Lawn. It’s part of the resort’s annual holiday open house that attracts families and friends from far and near to enjoy the gingerbread houses, the resort’s spectacular Christmas tree and carolers adding to the holiday atmosphere.
The event is further enhanced by hot chocolate, eggnog, apple cider and cookies. And, of course, Santa Claus will pay a visit.
Speaking of the jolly old elf, kids can have breakfast with Santa and Mrs. Claus from 10 a.m. to noon on Dec. 24 – just in time to make those last-minute requests to the man in charge. It’s $38 per person plus tax and gratuity. Call 712-7000.
There is also a variety of dining options for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve.

Half Moon Bay Review Coastside Holidays 13
O ne of the most magical sights of the holiday season on the coast is the Pillar Point Harbor Boat Decorating Festival. This year the quiet (hopefully) waters of the harbor will twinkle with light on Dec. 10.
For more than a decade — closer to two, by some estimates — owners of commercial boats, members of the “liveaboard” community and owners of recreational craft, all berthed at Pillar Point Harbor, unleash their creativity and holiday spirit by decorating
their vessels. Strands of lights reach to the tops of masts. Santas and reindeer and elves and even some original holiday characters may appear on the decks.
Typically, more than 20 boats participate and the forethought is obvious with each and every boat. Beginning at 6 p.m., judges will stroll the harbor pondering who will win the coveted first prizes of one month’s free berth rent for one recreational and one commercial boat. As they do, the air will fill with holiday music from a live band and also from a choral group singing holiday music. Around 8 p.m., the crowd makes its way to the Half Moon Bay Yacht Club for a holiday party complete with refreshments, Santa Claus, music, announcement of the winners, and lots of cheer.
