Supporting Your CauseThe GI Cancer Institute saves lives by funding gastro‑intestinal (GI) cancer clinical trials research in Australia. Gastro‑Intestinal (GI) cancers include the oesophagus, stomach, liver, gall bladder, pancreas and bowel. GI Cancers are the most common form of cancer, directly affecting more than 24,000 Australians each year and claiming a devastating 33 lives a day. The research that we fund enables Australians with GI cancer to receive the best medical treatment. By conducting research in Australia, our cancer patients receive new treatments three to five years earlier than if the research was to take place overseas. Our clinical trials allow us to find better ways to treat GI cancers.

Fundraising Impact?

At just 28 years old, Mae’s life was full of promise. She was in love, planning to get married and training to be a vet. Against the odds and with no family history or medical issues, Mae was diagnosed with aggressive, stage 4 colon cancer. But with her partner Nick by her side, Mae did not give up on her dreams. Throughout this horrific time, Nick was Mae’s rock. This included kneeling down beside Mae’s hospital bed, with a ring and asking her to marry him.She has endured months of intensive chemotherapy but is determined to live her life to the full. Mae only has great praise for the medical staff that looked after her and the innovative treatments that have helped to prolong her life.Just three years after her diagnosis, Mae is still going strong, married to Nick and loving her pets. Currently, she is in remission and life is just about back to normal. Mae is studying at Vet School and is helping us to “channel money into an area of research that is incredibly underfunded.”Please join us and help to give patients like Mae a future.

and awareness for GI Cancer clinical trials research.

DAY 4 Cradle MountainTake an early drive into the Heritage Listed Cradle Mountain National Park. With so many walking trails in the area you really are spoilt for choice here. From the stunning Dove Lake Circuit which will take you through Gondwanian forests, expose you to many of Tasmania’s endemic plant species and reveal secrets of the areas glacial past to a challenging climb up Cradle Mountain through boudlerfields of dolerite. DAY 5 Summit Mt MurchisonAnother early start will see you making your way into the remote, less traveled areas of Tasmania’s West coast – rich with mining history. Mt Murchison provides a challenging climb to stretch out your legs. The track starts climbing straight away through a dense forest. Not long into the climb the forest starts to receded and gives way to stunning views of the Murchison Range, beautiful tarns and rugged west coast of Tassie. There is some tricky rock scrambling to navigate before you can claim the summit. After enjoying the views and making your way back down you will continue your journey through small historic mining towns and remote dirt roads until you reach the stunning Pieman River and your home for the next night, Corinna.Walking Distance : 5kms (700m altitudinal gain over 2.5kms) | Walking Time: 5hoursmeals: B,L,D

DAY 6 Pieman HeadsCorinna is situated in an area known as the Tarkine – which contains Australia’s last remaining tract of cool temperate rainforest. A rich seam of mineral deposits running the length of the Tarkine has this area under constant threat by the prospects of open cut mining. A sunrise cruise down the Pieman River aboard the Arcadia II will give you a great understanding of how impressing and worth saving this beautiful area is. Once off the boat you will spend the next few hours walking along the rugged, gothic looking coast line – keep an eye out for ancient Aboriginal middens, keys to the astounding cultural values this special part of Tasmania has to offer. After a scrumptious lunch you will once again board the Arcadia to make your way back to Corinna and then on to Lake St Clair.Walking distance: 8kms | Walking Time: 3hoursmeals: B,L,D

DAY 7 Shadow Lake Circuit drive to LauncestonYou are situated right near the banks of the world renounced Lake St Clair – Australia’s deepest lake at 160m – deeper than the Bass Straight! Take the opportunity to wander along it’s shore before heading to breakfast. After breakfast you will embark on the Shadow lake circuit – a magical walk that shows off the diversity of the flora and fauna in this part of Tasmania. You will walk from Eucalyptus forest into sub-alpine moorlands and then into stunning myrtle beech rain forests. The lake itself is fringed by sub alpine Pencil Pine trees and Mt Rufus provides a stunning backdrop. Following lunch we will make our way back to Launceston for our last night to Celebrate our achievements over the last week and reminisce our highlights.Walking distance : 12kms | Walking Time: 5hoursTonight we celebrate our achievements and raising funds and awareness for GI Cancer.meals: B,L,D

This itinerary is subject to change with any modifications in Community regulations as well as Governmental changes and natural circumstances beyond our control.

ClimateTasmania is located between Latitudes 40 and 43, with the island’s temperature and weather moderated by the surrounding oceans. The cool temperate climate offers four distinct seasons which can interchange on any given day of the year. Summer inland temperatures average 24 degrees with nights averaging a relatively cool 8 degrees. Rainfall is far more than any mainland counterpart and averages 2700 millimetres on the west coast and central highlands. For group safety and comfort having adequate gear and equipment for the local conditions ensures your wilderness experience is enjoyable. Tasmanian Expeditions has a specialist gear list available that details what is required.

A Typical DayEach day, each group, each guide influences itinerary details but the following gives you an idea of daily timing:Mornings start with a nourishing breakfast before you pack up and prepare for the day. The morning walk is usually 3‑4 hours with numerous breaks along the way. A leisurely picnic lunch is served on the trail which provides the chance to take off your pack, put your feet up and enjoy the magnificent scenery. The afternoon walk is usually shorter than the morning walk, getting us to our accommodation with time for setting to explore, or just relaxing with a hot drink and a chat. Over a scrumptious, hearty dinner your guides will give a briefing on the following day’s activities and tell a few stories before heading off for the night’s rest.

Dietary RequirementsProvided we are advised in advance we are able to cater for vegetarian diets, and can assist with food intolerances. Please ensure you discuss your requirements with us at least a month prior to your trip to determine whether we can cater for your dietary needs. Please note that options are likely to be limited in remote locations or alternatives can be more expensive or unavailable and there may be times when those with special requirements need to provide their own food. As we are unable to guarantee a nut‑free or allergen‑free trip we strongly encourage travelers with sever or life‑threatening allergies to take all necessary medical precautions. Tasmanian Expeditions has a specialist gear list available that details what is required for The Overland Track.

A Typical DayEach day, each group, each guide influences itinerary details but the following gives you an idea of daily timing:Mornings start with a hot drink call from your guides. They then prepare a nourishing breakfast whilst you pack up your equipment and prepare for the day. After breakfast and complete pack‑down of camp we set off for the day’s walk. The morning walk is usually 3‑4 hours with numerous breaks along the way. A leisurely picnic lunch is served on the trail which provides the chance to take off your pack, put your feet up and enjoy the magnificent scenery. The afternoon walk is usually shorter than the morning walk, getting us to camp with time for setting up our tents, exploring, or just relaxing with a hot drink and a chat. Over a scrumptious, hearty dinner your guides will give a briefing on the following day’s activities and tell a few stories before heading off for the night’s rest.
