In April 2007, I ran across a book review of The Iron Whim: A Fragmented
History of Typewriting by Darren Wershler-Henry. The review related
anecdotes about how Henry James’ novels expanded markedly when he
began dictating them to a typist; how James found he could not compose to the
sound of any machine besides his Remington; and how, for years after his death,
his typist, Theodora Bosanquet, claimed to continue to receive dictation from her
late employer.
Neither the book nor the review said much more about this last tidbit, though
it instantly sparked my interest in the delicate relationship between an author
and his amanuensis. Before long, I had departed from James and Bosanquet, and
began to conjure my own famous author (this one married, unlike James) and
faithful secretary. The questions that drove me are the same as those that drive
the play: Is Myra channeling Woolsey? Is she delusional? Or is she merely an artful
forger? And what was the true relationship between employer and employee,
who spent a decade and a half in the same room, “exchanging breath as well as
spirit?”
Along the way I also discovered the play was an exploration of grief (my mother
had died the previous fall) and of the mystery inherent in writing itself – a
phenomenon I suspect I felt too superstitious about to closely examine before.
I’m thrilled that Ghost-Writer is being mounted this season at Circle Theatre,
where my earlier works Opus and Incorruptible have also been staged. Like the
central collaboration in this new play, my relationship with this theatre and its
gifted artists continues to grow and deepen, as I hope it will for years to come.

Hey there. I’m not really one for Director’s Notes. I mostly like to let you enjoy the show for itself without extraneous “Blah-blah-blahing” from me. This time, however, I would like to talk to you. Not about our
process or the history of the show or what the actors went through to find their lovely performances. No, I want to talk to you about Stuff. That’s right, Stuff. Now, look up, go ahead, look up, I’ll wait. Okay, see the typewriter onstage? That typewriter is an L.C. Smith, No. 8. It was manufactured in 1919. And, yes, it works.
So, now I bet you’re wondering how we came by such an authentic and gorgeous machine? Well, it would seem that Bill and Rose were watching “Storage Wars: Texas” on the A&E channel. For those of you, like me, who’ve never seen “Storage Wars: Texas,” it’s a show about people who bid on abandoned storage lockers and hope to find treasures stored within. On a recent episode, Moe and Mary found an old typewriter in a locker they won at auction. So, they tracked down Mr. Carroll Reeves at his shop in Plano. In addition to his regular business, Reeves happens to be a collector of old typewriters and other antiquities. After seeing Reeves on “Storage Wars: Texas,” Rose and Bill took a chance and contacted him, explaining that we were doing a show set in 1919, that we needed a typewriter, and would he, by chance, have access to one? Not only did Carroll have one, but he also refurbished it, put a fresh ink ribbon on it, and hand delivered the typewriter to the theatre.
So now, here it sits onstage in all its beautiful majesty. Mr. Reeves also loaned a few other antique items to Circle for the show. Be sure to ask Rose or Bill about them. (I’ll give you a hint, check out the Candlestick Telephone, and the Gramophone. Those are just a few items, can you guess the rest?)
Thank you for letting me share this story about our incredible lucky break followed by a complete stranger’s amazing generosity. Enjoy the show!
- Robin
