What DID gandhi DO?• In 1907 he began a campaign against the laws that made Indians register if they wanted to live in South Africa.

• Gandhi returned to India, an experienced political campaigner. At the ashram, women enjoyed full freedom and equal rights, there was complete religious tolerance, and caste distinctions were ignored.

• Satyagraha is not simply a strategy for opposing evil without using violence - it is a whole way of reconstructing society, using love and striving for truth.

•Did they suffer any hardships before, during or after their actions? 

• -Because he led indians to protest about British imposed salt tax,he was imprisoned for some years in South Africa and India. He was also a strict vegetarian. He believed vegetarianism was the beginning of his deep commitment to Brahmacharya.

• What change did they evoke or bring forward?

• -Gandhi developed satyagraha into a national movement, stressing passive resistance, nonviolent disobedience, boycotts and, on occasion, hunger strikes. He became so well-known and respected, that he gained influence with both the general public and the British rulers.

• I think the change is not really significant in my life because i have just known about him and his influence now.

• I think the change is still effect today because there are a lot of discrimination and wars in the world that need his perspective to change the world.

• They stood up for human rights and peace in the world.Because they wanted justice and equal treatment regardless their position, religions,races, and so on.

What actions did they take to make the change take place? What were the consequences?

• His powerful Satyagraha campaign with which he confronted the unjust laws of the local government was overwhelmingly successful. He roused the masses to political consciousness and proved to them that they possessed immense soul-force. The consequences were that he was sentenced to six years imprisonment and was released in February, 1924. In that same year he became President of the Indian National Congress.

How does learning about this individual make you feel?

• I think what he did in the previous life was a tremendous thing in the world which made a great change and everybody must respect him. I feel that this individual, Gandhi, was a serving leader who would stand-by for human rights along with his power and idealism.
