What services do I use with the old TKK password, and what do I use with the new Aalto password?

The old TKK passwords are still needed for some systems, which are not yet migrated to Aalto network. In the future all systems will use the Aalto password and then the old TKK passwords will be no longer needed.

Here’s a list of TKK’s IT services and the passwords required for them as of September 2010. Do note that there are 4 different passwords in the old TKK environment (master, mail, service, net) whereas in the Aalto environment there is only one that is used in all Aalto-related authentication.

Changing your old TKK passwords on an Aalto workstation1) Log in to an Aalto work station and open start-menu (bottom left corner, click the windows icon).

2) Open the SSH Tectia Terminal. You can type ‘ssh’ in the “search programs and files” field to locate the program.

Page 7: Getting the most out of your new Aalto workstation€¦ · studentwiki.aalto.fi YES NO inside.aalto.fi YES YES (service password) blogs.aalto.fi YES NO Eduroam wifi YES YES Aalto

7

3) Run SSH Tectia Terminal, click the Quick Connect button, which opens a “connect to a server” window. In this window, fill in the fields Host Name with vipunen.hut.fi and User Name with your TKK user-name. Then click connect.

4) Next the system will prompt for your TKK master password. Type it in and click OK.

Page 8: Getting the most out of your new Aalto workstation€¦ · studentwiki.aalto.fi YES NO inside.aalto.fi YES YES (service password) blogs.aalto.fi YES NO Eduroam wifi YES YES Aalto

8

5) If you haven’t connected to vipunen.hut.fi via SSH before, you will be shown a notification that the server’s host key isn’t found in your database. Choose “proceed with the connection and save the key for future use” and click OK.

6) Now you should be logged in to vipunen.hut.fi. Type password in the terminal screen and press enter - it should look similar to this:

7) After giving the ‘password’ command, the system will query which password you’d like to change:

8) In the password-menu you need to choose the password you want changed by typing the number of the password in the menu and pressing enter. Here as an example we’ll change the master password, so we entered the number ‘1’ and clicked enter. The system will prompt the master password again. Note that the text field won’t fill up with characters as you type the password for security reasons.

9) After typing in the master password, the system will prompt for the new password twice in a row in case the password was miss-typed. The system will also give the criteria for an adequate password. After the new password has been given the system will check for the quality of the password (if there are any recognizable words or if any character is repeated too many times in a row etc.). If the password given isn’t adequate, the system will inform about this and prompt for a new password. If you have problems choosing a password, just pick one of the random ones the system gives in the instructions on choosing a password and write it down. If the new password was adequate the system will inform that the change was a success:

Do not give your passwords to ANYONE. No TKK/Aalto employee will ever ask your passwords via e-mail nor should you ever put them in an e-mail yourself (for example when contacting the helpdesk). If you have your passwords written down on a piece of paper, do keep it safe.

Changing your old TKK passwords at home with SSHChanging your old TKK passwords at home is easy with an SSH program called PuTTY. You can down-load PuTTY for free here: http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.htmlPuTTY is a simple executable file so no “installation” is needed, just double-click the PuTTY.exe -file and follow these instructions:

1) The first window you’ll see is the PuTTY configuration window. Type vipunen.hut.fi to the Host Name -field and check that the port field is ‘22’ and connection type is SSH. Then click ‘open’.

2) If you haven’t used PuTTY to connect to vipunen.hut.fi before, you will be given a notification that the ‘servers host key is not cached in the registry’. Choose ‘yes’.

4) Next you will be shown the terminal screen with ‘vipunen~’ as the last line. Type password and click enter. You will be shown the password menu, where you need to choose which password you’d like to change. To choose the password you want changed you need to type in the correct menu number of pass-word and press enter. The menu numbers are shown in the menu-list:

5) As an example we chose to change our master password so we entered number ‘1’ and pressed enter. The system will prompt for your current master password again. After entering the master password, the system will prompt for the new password twice in a row in case the password was misstyped. The system will also give the criteria for an adequate password. After the new password has been given the system will check for the quality of the password (if there are any recognizable words or if any character is repeated too many times in a row etc.). If the password given isn’t adequate, the system will inform about this and prompt for a new password. Your home folder and WORK folder in the Aalto environment

There are two places in the Aalto IT environment to save documents and other files; your personal home directory and the common WORK folder system.

Your personal home directory is only visible to you and cannot be shared to anyone else. This home directory is perfect for files you want to keep to yourself. Your home directory is also used by our Win-dows , Linux and Mac operating systems to store their internal files. You should leave these files alone.

You can see your home directory in any Aalto Windows, Linux or Mac workstation you log on to. Because the home directory is stored on our central servers, all changes you make to your home directory will be visible on other workstations you use as well. In Windows, your personal home directory is always vis-ible as the Z: drive.

The WORK folder system is meant for shared files. The system is structured according to Aalto Uni-versity organizational codes; inside an organizational unit the organization itself can decide how to best use the WORK folders.

In the following instructions we will show how to access the WORK folder system from different Aalto operating systems.

Even though your personal home directory is stored centrally on our servers, your Aalto laptop makes a temporary copy of it in case you need it while outside our network. When you make changes in your home directory on your laptop while being offline, these changes will be updated automatically the next time you connect your laptop to our network (either via VPN or physical connection).

By default WORK folders are not available offline. If you want to make a particular WORK folder available while you are offline, see “Making folders available offline on Aalto Windows workstations” on page 27

Accessing the WORK folders on an Aalto Windows workstation1) Log on to an Aalto Windows workstation

2) Open the Windows Explorer (Start > Computer)

3) Type \\work in the address bar and press enter.

4) The root level of the WORK folder system appears. Here you can navigate deeper into the structure by selecting where your organization belongs. For example, if you belong to the organizational unit U9021, you would start by going to the U90 folder and inside it you would find the U9021 folder.

You can also access the WORK folders directly by entering \\work into any Windows application Open or Save dialog.

Making folders available offline on Aalto Windows workstations

By default WORK folders are only available while you are connected to the Aalto IT network (either via VPN or by a physical connection). If you want to make a WORK folder available while you are offline, right-click the folder name in Windows Explorer and select Always available offline.

When you choose to make a folder available offline, your Aalto laptop makes a temporary copy of it in case you need it while outside our network. When you make changes to this folder on your laptop while being offline, these changes will be updated automatically the next time you connect your laptop to our network (either via VPN or physical connection). In case there is a conflict (someone else has modified the same file), Windows will notify you of this through the Syncronization Center icon in the task area (lower right corner of the Windows desktop).
