Getting Started with your Research

• Most of the following slides were retrieved from • http://es.slideshare.net/drshama65/research-method-3050696

• You may visit that webpage for the complete presentation.

• You will find a review of the following concepts:• Definitions of Research Methodology

• How to do Research

• Measuring things / Data Collection

• Analyzing Data

• There are four activities identified as HW# (homework). Be sure you work on those, and bring them to class, to be registered as evidence.

HW1: Basics (5 evidences)

• With your selected topic, clearly answer the following:• Description of the topic (what the topic is, which title you consider appropriate for

your research)

• Rationale and significance (why is this topic important to you, why is this topic worthy of a research)

• Research questions (these will guide you through your literature review, write between three to six questions)

• Tentative organization (basic schedule of your research plan, how and when are you planning working on your literature review)

• Validate your product (activity) by presenting and explaining it to a friend/classmate. Once you receive his/her approval (shown with his/her signature) be sure you have your work registered.

HW2: How to do research (5 evidences)

• With your selected topic, clearly answer the following:• What is the objective of your research?

• What do you want to prove or disprove?

• What kind of research instruments will you be needing?

• How reliable are your research instruments?

• Propose a schedule for each step of your research

• Validate your product (activity) by presenting and explaining it to a friend/classmate. Once you receive his/her approval (shown with his/her signature) be sure you have your work registered.

HW3: Research instruments (5 evidences)

• Design two different questionnaires that could be used as part of your research. • Use between three to six questions per questionnaire (the questions could be the

same, but the questionnaires need to be different – multiple choice, open / close questions, yes / no, etc.)

• Try to think of questions that could help you gather the information you need for your research.

• Validate your product (activity) by presenting and explaining it to a friend/classmate. Once you receive his/her approval (shown with his/her signature) be sure you have your work registered.

HW4: Analyze data (5 evidences)

• Apply your questionnaires to different people. Use the gathered information to design two different charts to present the results.• Even when you can draw your own charts, it would be easier (and most helpful) to

use a graph designer software. You could try using Microsoft Excel (it is easy and functional).

• Validate your product (activity) by presenting and explaining it to a friend/classmate. Once you receive his/her approval (shown with his/her signature) be sure you have your work registered.
