Why NHS?

• If you are entitled to NHS treatment, the following services will be free of charge.

• Consulting a GP and other GP services

• Treatment in hospital (both emergency and non-emergency)

You may need to pay for:

• Medicines prescribed by your GP.

• Provides confidential information on: what to do if you or your family are feeling ill; particular health conditions; local healthcare services, such as doctors, dentists or late night opening pharmacies (chemist’s);self help and support organisations.

Walk In Centre

• Usually managed by a nurse and in some case doctors.• Patients do not need an appointment.• Most centres are open 365 days a year and outside office

hours.• May visit for all minor illnesses and injuries including :

infections and rashes, blood pressure checks, fractures and lacerations, emergency contraception and advice, stomach-aches, vomiting and diarrhoea, hay fever, insect and animal bites, stitches (sutures), dressing care, minor cuts and bruises, minor burns and strains etc.

Accident and Emergency Centres

• Use A&E department in case of serious injuries or illnesses.

• For example: loss of consciousness, acute confused state, fits that are not stopping, persistent severe chest pain, breathing difficulties, sever bleeding that cannot be stopped

• Call 999 for emergencies only!• Visit A&E or call 112( is ambulance number

Dentist Centres

• Find a dentist who accept NHS patients – many do not• Some Centres require registration and some do not.• If you are entitled to NHS treatment, you may still have

to make a contribution towards the cost of your dental treatment.

• If you are eligible for free prescriptions, you will also be eligible for free dental treatment.

• Some centres provided few service: Tooth pain; Gum Problems; a broken tooth; swelling; bleeding etc.

• Local A&E doesn’t have facilities to treat dental emergencies

Dentist Centres

• Band 1 course of treatment – £18.50This covers an examination, diagnosis (including X-rays), advice on how to prevent future problems, a scale and polish if needed, and application of fluoride varnish or fissure sealant.

• Band 2 course of treatment – £50.50This covers everything listed in Band 1 above, plus any further treatment such as fillings, root canal work or removal of teeth.

• Band 3 course of treatment – £219.00This covers everything listed in Bands 1 and 2 above, plus crowns, dentures and bridges.
