Getting Advised In the Department of Psychology: Regular Advising Season effective Spring 2020
Getting Advised In the Department of Psychology:
Regular Advising Season
effective Spring 2020
Before you start
Check your @ualr email regularly.
Announcements about Advising Season will be emailed there.
2
Advising Season
• Starts about three weeks before registration begins and runs for about 3 weeks thereafter.
• Emails regarding the exact dates are sent to @ualr.edu email
• We also Twitter! @UALRPsychology
3
Step 1: Make an appointment
• Make an appointment on Calendly https://ualr.edu/psychology/advising-appointment/
• If all your classes this semester are online, or you are part of the eLearning Online Campus, then you may sign up for a phone advising session. • Only Dr. Sherwin currently advises by phone
• Otherwise, review the time frames offered by the faculty and select one. • Get to know the faculty, mix it up!
• Please do not make multiple appointments. If there are multiple appointments, the later ones may be cancelled. Multiple appointments are unfair to other students.
4
First screen: Calendly*
5
* This is a generic screen. When you select the faculty member with whom you want to be advised their name will appear where now it says “ Psychology Department.”

Fourth screen
Please be sure you use your @ualr email: 1. Also, be sure you use your correct @ualr email! If you give the
wrong one (for example edsherwin@ instead of ebsherwin@; or eds3@ instead of eds7@ or ualr.com not ualr.edu) you will not receive the confirmation email about your appointment.
2. Please be sure your T number is accurate. Inaccurate or wrong T numbers may result in the cancellation of the advising appointment.
8
Made the appointment?
This is what the screen will show:
Your calendar will show a new event that will contain the following information:
9
Need to Cancel?
Cancel by going to your calendar, opening the event and clicking Cancel.
This is what the screen will show:
You can reschedule using the same steps 10
Step 2: Preparing for your appointment
• Find your degree plan:• Instructions on how to find your degree plan are available on our website:
https://ualr.edu/psychology/how-to-find-your-degree-plan/
• If there is a green check next to it, or the word “Yes,” you are good to go! If not, you need to complete the requirement.
11
Step 3: Select your courses
• Before you select your semester-specific courses, have you:
• Declared a minor or a second major?
• Begun, or are progressing, on your foreign language requirements?
• Are aware that some courses have prerequisites?
• Are familiar with the changes in the requirements for the major (hint: number of Statistics courses you must take, new Capstone?)
• Heads up: Not all courses (even required ones!) get offered every semester. So plan ahead!
• Repeating a course:
• May improve your GPA. However, it does not add towards the hours required for graduation!
• Your grade in a repeated course is the most recent one – even if you failed!
12
Lower and upper level courses
• Every course number tells two stories:• The first digit tells if it is lower or upper level.
• Anything higher than 2 is an upper level (3000 and 4000.) • If it starts with a 5 or a 7 it is a graduate course and not available for undergraduates.
• The second digit tells the number of credits.• So:
• PSYC 2300 is a lower level course• PSYC 3435 is an upper level course• PSYC 2300 is a 3 credit course• PSYC 3435 is a 4 credit course
• This is important because every student must have at least 120 hours to graduate, and 45 of those hours must be upper level.
13
Foreign Language
• Psychology majors are required to complete a 3-course sequence in a foreign language (1311, 1312, 2311)
• These must be taken in sequence. You start with the first course, pass it, take the second course etc.
• You must earn a “C” or better to transfer to the next course.
• Consider taking these course one after the other so you retain your previous knowledge.
• Not all foreign languages are available online.
14
Selecting a minor or another major• Psychology majors must declare a minor or a second major.
• Information about minors can be found at https://catalog.ualr.edu/content.php?catoid=4&navoid=118 –(scroll towards the middle of the page)
• To declare your minor, submit the following form:https://ualr.edu/psychology/declare-a-minor/
• Majors are declared in the department that houses them. So, if you want to declare a second major, you will need to reach out to that department.
• Start early – integrate these requirements into the course work early so you are not “chasing” required courses at the end of your career!
• Submit the form before you start your course selection for the semester and then you can start the coursework this semester.
15
Curricular Changes in Psychology• Effective Fall 2019, students will be required to take only:
• Statistics and Methods 1 and • Research Methods 1.
• Statistics and Methods 2 will no longer be a requirement. Note: Degree plans in BOSS may not reflect this change.
• Statistics ands Methods 1 will go from a 3-credit course to a 4-credit course.• It will now be PSYC 3435
• Senior Synthesis (PSYC 4100) is transformed into Capstone (PSYC 4392). • It will go from a 1 credit course to a 3-credit course• Effective Fall 2020, (PSYC 3431) Research Methods I will be a prerequisite for the course.
• Some students may be required to take 1 more upper level course in Psychology to reach the required 34 hours.
16
(Actual) Course selection
• Consider using this link to find your courses: https://a.ualr.edu/classes/
• A note about the different campuses (eLearning Online vs. Little Rock (Main) Campuses:• If you take all your classes online you may be part of the eLearning-Online
Campus. Or you may be part of the Little Rock Campus but take your classes online. If:• You enroll in U sections then you are part of the Online Campus• You enroll in 99X courses (991, 993 etc.,) than you are part of the Little Rock Campus but
take your classes online. • Do not assume that you are part of the Online Campus just because you take your classes
fully online!

respective courses: 4-letter department code, course number, course section, CRN, course title and meeting times.• The electronic form is emailed to the student’s email account. • If it does not arrive that means there was a typo in the email (or check SPAN
or junk folders.)• The student must print off a copy and brings it to the advising session. • No hard copy = No appointment.
