Japan’s military had become powerful by 1931 and invaded China’s Manchurian region for resources.

Japanese considered invasion their only option to save their economically failing nation.

European territories in Asia left defenseless due to war in Europe.

In 1940, Japan proclaimed their plan to establish the “Greater East Asia Co-prosperity Sphere.” (Plan for Japan to take control of Asian territories instead of Europeans)

U.S responded to Japanese actions with sanctions and bans on Japanese materials.

Japan responded by signing Tripartite Pact with Germany and Italy.
