With the help of a parent, cut 2 or 3 triangles out of an old cardboard cereal box. The triangles can be half as big as the paper towel roll or even bigger—it's up to you. These are the wings of the rocket ship. Glue or tape the wings to the bottom half of the decorated rocket "body." If you want your rocket ship to be able to stand up on its own, then be sure to line up the bottom of the triangles with the bottom of the rocket "body" (a.k.a the paper towel roll.)

THE SUPER-DUPER ROCKET SHIP MADE OUT OF RECYCLED MATERIALS

For this project you will need a variety of recycled materials from around your home, which can include:

• Empty paper towel rolls (makes for a good base)• Empty toilet paper rolls (for tiny rocket ships or for super add-on accessories for a larger ship)• Used tissue paper (for decorating)• Old cardboard from a cereal box/cracker box (for wings)• Whatever else you can fi nd that will make your rocket ship amazing You will also need: • Glue or tape• Scissors (use with parental assistance)• Markers

Take your empty paper towel roll and decorate it however you like. This is the "body" of the rocket ship. You can cover it in multi-coloured tissue paper or you can draw your favourite animal on it. Be creative!

With the help of your parent, cut a medium-sized circle out of the fl yer or recycled piece of paper (approximately 2.5 inches in diameter). Once you have a circle, you must take the scissors and cut a straight line into the circle, but stop at the centre. Do this one more time so that you have cut out 1/4 of the circle (see diagram). Curl the remaining circle into a cone so that the centre becomes the tip of the rocket ship. Once you have created the right sized cone, tape or glue it in place, and then tape it to the top of the rocket ship. If you have red, yellow, or orange tissue paper then you can make this rocket ship look like it's fl ying in outer space. Simply take a little bit of tissue (approximately 5 inches x 7 inches) and crumple it together so that it looks like a fl ame. Glue or tape this tissue to the bottom inside of the paper towel roll. Your rocket ship now looks like it's in motion, so the only thing left to do is...

...hold it in the air and be proud of your lovely creation! With parental supervision, you can now run outside with your Super Duper Rocket Ship. Hooray!

How to make your very own

To make Horsie you’ll need:

Stu one sock, using lots of stu ng, from the toe of the sock to the heel of the sock. From the heel down will become the legs, so stu this part too, but using a bit less stu ng. In order to create two legs, you’ll have to do a bit of sewing. Find the centre point of the sock, and measure about half an inch to the right from there (on the ankle), and begin sewing up, until you’re about two inches down from where the heel of the sock is. (Of course, depending on how big your sock is, this may di er.) The next step is to stitch over half an inch to the left and sew down. You should now have a gap of half an inch in the centre. Now cut from the ankle to the top between where you have stitched, and now you will have two legs. But: you’ll have stitches and stu ng showing, which is ugly! So, to eliminate this, turn up the striped portion of the sock, covering these bits, giving Horsie shorter, stripey legs.

Now that you have a body and legs for Horsie, you need to give him arms! Using the second sock, cut o the striped bit at the ankle, using about four inches, to create the arms. Now cut your smaller striped piece in half. Using your needle and thread or sewing machine, stitch the side of the arm, and the bottom of the arm. Leave the top open so you can stu it, using enough stu ng for your liking. Next, choose your arm location. About halfway between the heel and toe of the sock, or the bum and the head, is best. You can use big loose stitches here—just enough to make sure the arms are secure to the body.

Now using more of the sock that you’ve cut the arms from, you’ll cut the ears and the tail. Cut two triangles from the bottom corners of the sock, about an inch wide, and an inch high. You can make the tail as long as you want, and about half an inch wide. Sew up the side of the tail, and one end. You can leave one end open because you will be sewing it onto Horsie. Now using some of your wool and your wool needle, sew hair onto the sewn end of Horsie’s tail.

The next step may seem like a funny one, but right now Horsie is looking up to the sky, and you want him looking at you! So, from the underside of his head, right at the edge of where the sock’s toe ends, grab a small bit and fold down to his chest so his face is now looking at you. Using your needle and thread, make a few small stitches to hold his head in place onto his chest. He’s now a little bit smaller (in a good way!) and isn’t looking o into space anymore!

Now is when Horsie begins to get a bit of his personality. It’s time to add the eyes, nostrils, and ears! Using your big set of buttons (or you can use felt, fabric, leather or anything else you choose) sew on the eyes—about an inch or an inch and a half from Horsie’s muzzle. Use your two smaller buttons to sew onto the muzzle for Horsie’s nostrils. Now comes the placement of Horsie’s ears. You can use your best judgment for the placement—about two inches back from where you placed the eyes—and sew these on, so now Horsie can hear you as you compliment how cute he’s becoming!

Now comes the last step! Horsie needs a mane. Now is the time to use your big wool needle. Thread a very long piece of yarn through the needle, and if you can, try to double up the yarn so his hair is thicker. Start at the centre of his head (about half an inch from the top of his eyes) and stitch back, adding as much hair as you like. You can use di erent colours of wool to give his hair some dimension, and give him a haircut at the end if need be.

Now your Horsie is complete! Make sure to love him!

Make Your Own Harry and HOrsie Mobile

For this project you will need:• Scissors• Fishing line, string, yarn or ribbon• 2 sticks, chopsticks, dowels, pencils or anything sturdy you can use to attach the mobile pieces to• Hole punch• Glue• An adult to help!

Cut out each of these pieces and glue together for extra strength. When the glue is dry, use your hole punch to make a hole at the top of each piece. Next, cut your fi shing line in varying lengths and tie each piece to the illustrations you have cut out. Then, take your sticks or dowels and place them together so they make an X shape. You can fasten them together with tape, and then cover the tape with ribbon or string so it’s pretty to look at. Now attach all of the pieces to the X, and hang it from the ceiling. Enjoy looking at Harry and Horsie fl oating around in space!
