Background In 2006 the City of Perth developed a physical activity plan to provide a framework with a set of objectives to guide the planning, implementation and evaluation of physical activity initiatives for its residential, corporate and tourist populations. The City identified a number of multifaceted strategic initiatives that where contained within the City of Perth Physical Activity Plan 2006-2009 and linked to the Disability Access and Inclusion Plan, Community Safety and Crime Prevention Plan and the Environmental Health Priority Plan. Objectives Develop and promote resources to inform the community of local physical activity opportunities. Create an urban environment that supports physical activity. Increase the number of people in the community participating in regular physical activity. Raise awareness and promote physical activity. What Happened A project committee was established with representation across internal urban development, corporate support, off street parking and environmental health units, Department of Planning, Corporate Challenge Games and the Physical Activity Taskforce. Further collaboration occurred across TravelSmart, culture and the arts, parks and gardens, and planning and infrastructure work areas within the council. The City aimed to develop an urban environment that supported and encouraged physical activity. Key strategies implemented included the development of a Walking and Jogging Guide that features a selection of 11 routes, walking trail signage and stencilling and point of decision signage encouraging stair use in car parks. Copies of the guide were available online and distributed to workplaces within the city, the tourist information centre, the community centre and the library. Community group exercise programs were introduced including pilates, yoga and a stretch and balance program at various locations in the City of Perth. Heart Foundation walking groups targeting senior participation were introduced into the community. Case Study 26 City of Perth Get Active in the City

Critical Success Factors• A whole of Local Government approach.

• Integration with existing strategies and programs.

• Creating a supportive environment to complement the delivery of programs and initiatives.

Lessons Learned• Policies and procedures can change within a Local

Government without communication of these changes to all units and staff. These changes can affect the original application, budget and timeline.

• Commence projects with external contractors as soon as possible in order to comply with the project timeframe, as external contractors do not always adhere to timeframes stipulated due to a number of reasons.

Where to From Here• The City has recently evaluated the 2006-2009 Physical

Activity Plan and is now in the process of developing a new 2011-2014 Physical Activity Plan for the City.

• The City has released a draft urban design framework that aims to influence the physical and social fabric of the city, including the provision of new parks and public open spaces and public transport connections.

This project has been supported by a Local Activity Grant provided by the Physical Activity Taskforce, the WA Local Government Association and Lotterywest. Information on Local Activity Grants and case studies
