The first two lots of predominantly photographic cards are a historical documentary of the period; the following dozen lots of Propaganda cards provide the socio-political commentary. Real-photo cards show the astounding scale of the Nuremburg Rallies at a time when the world was still in the grips of the Depression, and the vast crowds are quite overwhelming. The juxtapositions - of a youthful, energetic Hitler maneuvering against an aging, infirm Hindenburg; of the festive banners, eagles and tailored uniforms against the brutality to follow - are stark. It is no accident that red is the predominant colour of the Propaganda cards, as it was for Lenin’s Soviet and Mao’s Cultural Revolution. On the one hand, the power of the images sounds its own warning; on the other, our awareness of the artistic talent being subverted should not prevent us from appreciating it. Ex Lot 1065 Hindenburg & Hitler collection illustrating the rise of the Nazi Party from 1927 to 1934 culminating in the elevation of Hitler to both Reichskanzler and Reichspräsident with some stamps (Cat €150), stationery and ephemeral items such as election ballot papers but mostly real photo postcards of people, places and events including 1932 March with 'Wahlt [vote] Hitler' graffiti, 1932 Braunes Haus NSDAP Headquarters postcard with 'Hakenkreuz von der Reichspost verboten' [Swastika prohibited by Post Office] cachet sent through the mails, 1933 Burning of the Reichstag Building, 'Day of Potsdam' and opening of the new Reichstag with numerous cards showing dignitaries and parades, Hindenburg's death in 1934, then a study of Hitler portraits and his house in the Bavarian Alps ending in ruins after the war, fine condition with quite a few postally used.
