Dear Customers and Readers,

An exciting and eventful year 2016 is waiting for us. As every second year, the IFAT, our most important trade fair for wastewater, takes place in Munich. Therefore, traditionally, a lot of our international sales partners travel to Vilsbiburg for a big sales meeting. This always brings many new suggestions and ideas to further enhance the satisfaction of our customers in all fields. And we at HILLER take this suggestions and wishes very seriously. Starting with a consequent further development and improvement of our decanters up to an ideal and customer-oriented service.

Last but not least due to some internal suggestions, customer surveys and market analyses, the development of the new decanter series with the types DP664 and DP764 could be pushed successfully.

The first extremely positive feedbacks confirm that the needs of our customers are exactly satisfied with the new series.

At this year's IFAT we will of course present you our new series. One of our exhibits will be a DP764 as a mobile plant in a 45-foot trailer. You can inform yourself on-site how high-performance, economical and operator friendly the new HILLERdecanter is. At the outside exhibition area our high-qualified technicians from our test department explain all advantages of our new machine. At our booth no. 150 in hall A1 this year we present a DO31 for explosion-proof applications. Let us convince you with security standards such as ATEX and an optimum process engineering. Especially in the industry, decanters of this size are well in demand.

However, this should not remain the only innovation!Standstill is always a step back! This is our policy and therefore we are constantly working on new and exceptional innovations. An excellent example is our new centrate monitoring system centrate control, which is applied for HILLERpatent. You can learn more about this system directly at the IFAT at our booth no. 150 in hall A1 and in our brochure, which can be easily downloaded from our homepage (www.hillerzentri.de/downloads.html).

With this in mind, I cordially invite you to visit us at the IFAT and let us convince you with our products at our boothno. 150 in hall A1 and at the outside exhibition area!

With best wishes from Bavaria and “Vergelt's Gott!” – our way of saying “Thank you” to our customers, partners and employees.

OVERVIEW

The waste water authority of the Swiss region Lake Zug – ”Küssnachtersee”- “Ägerisee” operates the waste water treatment plant “ARA Schönau“ - one of the biggest and most modern waste water treatment plants in Switzerland.

Via a canal network with about 75km main collecting canals, 20 waste water pumping stations and 10 storm water overflows, 20 million cubic metres of waste water per year are led into the central main clearing plant (180,000 inhabitants) of canton Zug.

Thus “ARA Schönau“ is not only one of the biggest, but also one of the most progressive plants and absolutely state of the art. By an anaerobic ammonia oxidation the nitrogen containing centrate from the sludge dewatering is pre-treated biologically(Anammox procedure). In this process nitrogen links are at first directly changed into elementary nitrogen (atmospheric nitrogen) and then conducted away.

HILLER Decanter technology wins against competitors

HILLER is proud of winning a thrilling competition and of having delivered two of their new high-performance centrifuges, type DP 574. We are especially proud that one of the two machines has the production number HILLER5,555 which is very nice for such an important reference plant. HILLER succeeded in winning an open invitation of tenders issued by planning office “Hunziker Betatech”. The criteria for finding the best bidder were defined as follows: “the most cost-efficient offer and a check of customer satisfaction of already installed plants“.

All competitors had the opportunity of testing dewatering properties of the sludge conditions on site with performance tests. Every company could present its latest machine technology. A requirement which matches with the strengths of our company and so the welcome decision was communicated to us in August 2015.

HILLER met all deadlines – and could even exceed therequired performance

Due to an exemplary cooperation with the local supervision of works by company ”Hunziker Betatech”, the head of operation of waste water treatment plant and his qualified and motivated team, supported by another subcontractor, the new plant could be commissioned and was ”ready to go“ on schedule in December 2015.

Already immediately after commissioning the per-formance results of the uninstalled machines were exceeded considerably.

HILLER Centrate Monitoring ensures optimum operatingsafety

For the first time ever in use at our customers the patented HILLER Centrate Monitoring System has also been implemented here. This system ensures a continuous optical monitoring of a pre-selectable quality of the centrate water and also as controlled variable for achieving an optimum result in terms of business management! In addition to more operational safety we obtain in this specific case a proven reduction of the polymer con-sumption in a range from 0.5 to 1kg more substance/toDS, which equals a reduction of yearly operating costs by 5 to 10%!

Once again we want to say thank you for the pleasant and fruitful realization of the project and are looking forward to a long-term cooperation with ”ARA Schönau”.

Functionally as well as economically a really good choice

This concept had been a really good choice because the wastewater treatment plant is meanwhile functionally as well as economically a municipal model project, Petersen continues. Thus one can offer heavenly wastewater prices of one euro per cubic meter to the citizens of Böklund. The surrounding villages Stolk, Struxdorf and Süderfahrenstedt would also make a profit from this price, which would be also low by means of the wastewater volume of the Böklund sausage factory. The surrounding villages also discharge their wastewater via gravity and pressure pipelines into the wastewater treatment plant of Böklund. In these 20 years of operation there had not been any considerable interruptions or accidents. There are also capacities left for expansion, says Peterson.

“The wastewater treatment plant Böklund again reached a milestone in its history”, said sewage works operator Norbert Jacobsen regarding the 20 years celebration of the institution. He personally celebrates his anniversary of 30 years service and his colleague Jürgen Schröter his anniversary of 20 years service.

“In the matter of sludge dewatering we have made a quantum leap”, continues Jacobsen. He refers to the new HILLER centrifuge, which withdraws 5 % more water from the sludge than the old one.

In total about 250,000.00 have been invested in the modernisation of the plant. The core of this renovation is a Hiller decanter DP45-422. This has been an alternative investment – the old aggregate was also a decanter, HILLERwhich did its job 20 long years very reliable and to the plant operator's full satisfaction.

Before the introduction of the modern dewatering technology, we had to work with an ineffective trickling filter - evokes Böklund's mayor Johannes Petersen. “At that time the wastewater ran into the Kattbek nearly untreated”, he remembers. This stream had been a cloaca and the ground on its banks had become useless. It was permitted to water animals there. “We've got an independent solution off the ground together with the engineering society North, the engineering firm Sekoulov from Hamburg as well as the main discharger – the “Böklunder Wurstfabrik” (a sausage factory based in Böklund).

The consumer nowadays expects more and more high-quality and organic products. Premium and organic juices of all kinds, be it berry, fruit or vegetable juice offer many vitamins and precious minerals and ingredients such as antioxidants like vitamin C. Juice production with HILLERdecanter centrifuges makes sure that these precious and healthy ingredients are maintained to a maximum without additional food additives.

One-step process with HILLER decanter saves second machine

Besides naturally cloudy fruit and vegetable juices also berry juices offer an interesting option for the beverage industry to extend their product range. The processes for berry juice production are usually in two steps which is not good for the natural quality of the juice.

HILLER performs this process with one machine only which reduces required cleaning to a minimum and saves the costs for a second machine.

No need of food additives like enzymes

The conventional production process works with a mash enzymation to reach the desired yields. The HILLERdecanter technology enables the production of a natural juice without using enzymes with high yields.

By this the costs for the usual use of enzymes can be saved and the juice can be placed into the premium segment.

A change to other products is quick and simple enabling a flexible and continuous production of different juices.

WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT BÖKLUNDA MILESTONE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

HILLER EMPLOYEES DONATE TO PRIMARY SCHOOL IN PERUThere were many astonished looks when Tobias Messmer, one of the Service technicians went to the school of HILLERthe village Chancay(Peru) with a cheque of 1,000.00 in his baggage, which is to be used for the children of the school. This money was donated by the employees of the HILLERGmbH in the course of a company event.Chancay is a Peruvian provincial town approximately 70 kilometres north of Lima.Together with the town centre and its surrounding villages, around 60,000 people live in this province. The population earns the most of its money in the fish meal factories and by farming. In 2012, three decanters for cleaning of HILLERpumping water were installed in one of the three local fish meal factories.Already at that time, the technicians recognized the HILLERhard conditions under which the population in this area has to live. As mostly in poor regions the children are particularly suffering from the poverty.

When Mr. Messmer arrived there, pupils as well as teachers came to the forecourt and welcomed him very joyful. The donation cheque for 1,000.00 was handed over to the school principal by all the children and the whole teaching staff under big applause and a common “Gracias ”.HILLER

Simulation of new designs provides long-term operational safety

Today simulations are used in every new design project, not just to calculate the scroll, but also for many other critical components, such as intrinsic frequencies of pipes in the range of the operating speeds currently being used. This is also due to the fact that lower speeds and greater safety factors were used previously. More prototypes were required to achieve this, however, to record the intrinsic resonances using measurement technology. The consequence was that any problems occurring were not detected until a late stage, meaning that they were then time-consuming and expensive to correct. “Using the simulation we can achieve a high level of reliability even with the first machine. This also applies to customised modifications with standard machines and custom machines for special applications” explained Robert Wagenbauer.

INTRINSIC MODE CALCULATIONS FOR CENTRIFUGESHILLER INVESTS IN MODERN SIMULATION TECHNOLOGY

Simulation with realistic models

It was obvious to the design engineers that they HILLERwould not be able to obtain any calculations at the touch of a button and that they would first need to gather experiences on how the various parameters could be used to create a realistic picture using the simulation model. To analyse the running behaviour of the centrifuges, the contacts would also have to be correctly defined and the intrinsic modes taken into account, in addition to the bearing rigidity levels and bolted connections.

HILLER started initially a consulting project with CADFEM for the modal analysis of our decanting centrifuges. In this process the intrinsic modes of the rotor and scroll were tested to avoid entering one of the critical resonance ranges and to keep the imbalances as low as possible. As part of the joint consulting project, working with the ANSYS software produced the required results, meaning that the simulation engineers were able to approximate reality more closely step by step.

Analysing the running behaviour of the machine

"When dimensioning the individual machine components, we need ever more detailed knowledge of the critical ranges of the designs in question", explains Robert Wagenbauer. "As we can use the simulation to estimate in advance what happens when we change individual parameters, we find out a lot about the running behaviour of the machine. We know the limit values after which problems may arise and how critical ranges can be rectified.”

Requirements to energy efficiency have been kept

The requirements placed on the rapidly rotating machines with high dynamics are growing continually, however. In addition to ever rising speeds and increasingly lightweight designs, energy savings are more and more becoming the focus of interest. For example, the power requirement of the machines can be reduced by up to 30 % using the new HILLER ECO-Jet weir disks.

Decanter producer GmbH, based in Vilsbiburg, HILLERGermany, proudly presents a number of innovations on this year's IFAT.

First of all the existing decanter series DecaPress has been extended by two more sizes and thus now corresponds to the customers' requests in their different fields of applications. Furthermore, also the completely new Centrate HILLERControl- will be presented.

After successful launch into the market of the sizes up to 570 mm bowl diameter now also has implemented HILLERthe new design in the tried and tested and well-established types of series up to 760 mm.

HILLER did not compromise and sticked clearly to the industrial customers' requirements:

3 Even higher solid yields These are reached due to a significantly higher machine performance. In addition, an optimized rotor geometry ensures very good clearing and dewatering properties.

3 Maximum economic efficiency By lower operating costs (minimum polymer, power and water consumption). Additional savings are achieved above all with regards to the disposal costs by the high DS degree which is obtained through the HILLER DecaPress in the discharge. 3 Simpler operating and higher degree of automation The DecaPress is simple to adjust and is characterized by a very stable and smooth running behaviour.

Innovative Centrate Control ensures optimum operational safety and reduced costs Also the “ Centrate Control“ has its premiere on the HILLERIFAT. This system has been applied for a patent, already. It works with help of an object sensor and its function is the running optical monitoring of a pre-selectable centrate water quality and it is also a controlled variable to achieve an optimum economically efficient operating process. By this innovative technology a perfect process stability is ensured.

Avoiding excessive polymer doses – above all overnight and on weekends By a specially developed SPS component the polymer amount or the feeding amount are changed – depending on the colouring of the centrate. By this control the polymer consumption is optimized and unnecessary, excessive doses are avoided.

... TO KEEP EVERYTHING RUNNING SMOOTHLY

Focussing on solids/fluids separation, GmbH has HILLERover the past 45 years become an international manufacturer of decanting centrifuges and a specialist in the construction of the complete centrifuge systems. Right from the start, the family company from Vilsbiburg in Bavaria based their approach on ensuring highest product quality. Since 2014, this has also been achieved with the help of ANSYS simulation software and expertise from CADFEM.

The applications for decanting centrifuges are extremely varied, and this variety is matched by the breadth of process requirements in the various machine designs from . HILLERWhether waste water and environmental technology, power generation, chemical industry or drilling fluids for tunnel construction as well as oil and gas production, or even in the food industry, in particular olive oil production: anything that can be pumped can be processed using HILLER centrifuges to separate solids and liquids. Thanks to decades of experience in development work, Head of Design Robert Wagenbauer is able to draw on a wealth of experience in the design of decanting centrifuges.

The feed pipes have also been comprehensively simulated and the calculation result modified. As the unit consists of a thick-walled pipe, a reduction and a thin-walled pipe, multiple parameters require modification to produce the minimum material and production costs. A specific gear box was also developed recently where several important parts, including the planetary carrier, were also analysed and improved using simulations.

“The primary benefit that we derive from the numerical simulation is enhanced understanding of mechanics, especially the behaviour under load", emphasises Stefan Huber, designing engineer at . "This means we have HILLERbeen able to modify the tested designs in early phases and avoid any critical status conditions arising. After all, we want our machines to run safely for the long-term. This is our topmost goal -nevertheless we want to keep a handle on our production costs and reduce them if possible."

Expanding the use of simulations

Following previous successes with the simulation applications, the intention is to engage an additional simulation engineer to expand expertise and strengthen this area. Previous successes include modifications to the scroll geometry to further reduce or completely prevent deposits occurring. In this process, the focus was on both fewer imbalances and on overall improved running to guarantee safe and stable running.

"The scroll is the most complicated component in our decanting centrifuges and is a key factor in the overall concept", emphasises Robert Wagenbauer. "Now that we have been able to implement several optimisations here using the simulation, we can now concentrate on other areas during the simulation process."

The ACHEMA fair in Frankfurt, Germany, enjoys an international reputation as the most important fair for the process industry. About 4,000 exhibitors from more than 50 countries present their products and services here on an area of 140,000 m². This year's main topics were industrial wastewater and organic products. These two topics are of great potential for Hiller and their decanter centrifuges. Thus the company decided to attend the fair again and presented its compact and explosion-proof three-phase decanter. This machine aroused great interest of the attending visitors and a lot of requests – especially from industrial customers – were received.

HILLER TRAINEES VISIT THE ORO OBSTVERWERTUNG E.G.

On 1st September six new trainees were welcomed at the GmbH. Their future professions are HILLERindustrial mechanic (m/f), mechanics technician (m/f) and technical product designer (m/f). On the next day the annual apprenticeship excursion took place on which all the Hiller apprentices took part.

They visited the ORO Obstverwertung e.G. in Rohrdorf near Rosenheim together with their trainers Petra Biedermann, Stephan Weinholz, Mathias Schmidt and Thomas Barth.

The decanter experts-to-be could there get familiar with the product of their company in operation.

The group was welcomed cordially by the fruit juice technician Regina Vodermaier on behalf of the ORO management. She also guided them through the company.

Ms. Vodermaier took them to the fruit reception – the first step of the juice production. At the next step the apples will be washed and checked at the sorting belt. Afterwards they will be transported into the decanter over a specialized fruit mill, where the apples will be grinded into mash. Then the HILLER two phase centrifuge separates the pomace from the juice with 3,500 rotations per minute. ORO is proud to be able to offer their customers an especially high-quality and gently processed juice by using the centrifuge.HILLER

With this processing system the juice doesn't become brown and keeps more of his healthy ingredients because it doesn't come into contact with oxygen, as it does when a conventional belt press is used.

Finally the guests got some juice samples produced by the HILLER decanter as well as freshly pressed apple juice. The HILLER trainers expressed their thanks for the really interesting insight into the company.

After a small lunch break the group went to the “Bavaria Filmstudios”. Particularly the 4D-cinema and the “Bullyversum” aroused big enthusiasm. The trainees could also prove their stagecraft in teams by shooting short films.

Such excursions are carried out successfully at now HILLER for several years. It's the best opportunity for the trainees to get to know each other as well as their trainers. This helps strengthening the team work - a strong team spirit means cohesion of the group and the easier it is to achieve the defined goals in the team.

NEWS 2016 NEWS 2016

Purification of industrial wastewaters is a special field of application of Hiller technology

It has been known for a long time now that decanters are used for wastewater cleaning – for sewage sludge. But decanters have also been used for industrial waste water for decades now, eg paint wastewater from the automotive industry and paper wastewater from cardboard production. And the decanter can be used for many applications in the field of organic products from renewable raw materials. The whole industrial branch is subject to permanent change – organic products become more and more important.

Following the trend to use organic products opens numerous new fields of application for the decanter. This means new chances and opportunities for our industrial customers – especially when you consider that decanters run with high economic efficiency in many processes. Organic products are an exciting subject with a big future and many chances for today's society.

In this field GmbH has cooperated successfully HILLERwith well-known starch producers for 45 years now.

In addition to the application fields mentioned above the production of biocatalysts and the production of many alternative fuels, eg palm oil or rape seed oil, should be added:

Organic processes can nowadays be found in all aspects of daily life – often not noticed by the consumer. From fuels to pharmaceutic ingredients up to the most different materials in the building industry – products from renewable raw materials have become a part of our daily life.Production of biobased products by means of a decanterSo decanters are used for example in the production HILLERof bio ethanol, which can again be used as fuel for kerosene. But bio ethanol can also be used for the production of bio plastics, which serve for example as packaging material for food. Also in the biogas production decanters play an important role in the meantime. This gas forms when organic material decomposes without oxygen in so-called biogas plants. By the fermentation of organic waste methane gas is formed, which is used for power generation. decanters are HILLERagain used for dewatering the fermentation residues. For sustainability reasons the waste heat, which is formed in the production of biogas, should also be used in a constructive sense. There are many ideas for this, one is the use of waste heat for algae cultivation. Here GmbH, HILLERtogether with engineering company Empl GmbH and the “Justus-Liebig-Universität” in Gießen, became part of a research project for algae harvest where the decanter is used effectively. The fields of application for the algae are numerous from feed for animals to the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industry. But also as a supplier of bio fuels the algae is very suitable. The gain of biomass is many times higher than with ordinary useful plants. Moreover the algae can be harvested all year round. The key to success is the right method of algae harvesting. For an effective harvesting GmbH and its partners HILLER mentioned above developed a new high-performance procedure with decanter technology.Another biological product which can be produced with a decanter is starch. It is used in modified and hydrosylated form in the chemical, cosmetics and food industry and in the pharmaceutical industry. In starch production decanters are used in the production process itself (pulp dewatering and fruit water separation) and also in the field of industrial waste water cleaning.

10 < SERVICE COMPANY NEWS - FAIRS > 11

Juicing by decanter centrifuges is nowadays a well-established procedure. With regards to economic efficiency and quality this procedure competes more and more successfully with conventional pressing technologies.

The BRAU Beviale fair in Nuremberg, Germany, showed that the technology has now also entered this market HILLERsuccessfully. The BRAU Beviale is the most important international fair for all items of capital expenditure in the process of the production of beverages of all kinds. The fair lasted from 10 to 12 November 2015. A nice number of visitors came to the stand on all three days. HILLER

Among them were many popular producers of wine and juice from all over the world. All of them showed a great interest in the use of decanter technology for their fields of application.

On top of very high yields and hygiene standards due to the closed system also economic advantages such as the reduction of waste water, low maintenance and cleaning costs, simple handling and a space-saving and compact design of decanters are the most important benefits HILLERof this technology. Especially in the juicing of drupe and in the production of premium juices without additives the Hiller decanter plays its trump cards.

Opposed to standard decanters the special design allows the processing of fruits such as plums and cherries with stone. Thus no coring system is required in the first place. Also the production of premium juices by centrifuges is now an interesting option for the beverage industry.

Fruit and vegetable juices can be produced in a one-step process without additives.

Generally speaking a change to other products can be performed quickly and is simple – enabling a flexible and continuous production of different juices with only one machine. Another major advantage for the fruit juice industry.

Many well-known producers have been using HILLERtechnology now for years. A small choice of references can be obtained from our website:
