5.1 Introduction
• The case information within an article or equivalent is determined by the verbthe verb.
• This lecture introduces you to the engine of the sentence - the verb or predicatethe verb or predicate.
• You need to be well acquainted with the different parts of the verb in order to match to match the verb to the subjectthe verb to the subject of the sentence and to form the tenses of the verbtenses of the verb correctly.
5.2 The Infinitive
• The form of the verb that you find in your dictionary is the infinitive (der Infinitivder Infinitiv):
• This can have one of two endings.• -en:-en: schlafenen (to sleep), machenen (to do) • -n:-n: seinn (to be), tunn (to do)• -n-n endings are common amongst verbs whose
stem contains -el -el and -er -er: e.g. angelneln (to fish), wandernern (to wander)
5.3 Finite verbs
• When a verb adds personal endings we call it a finite verb finite verb - ein finites Verbein finites Verb.
• The finite forms of a verb are those where a verb shows tensetense, personperson & numbernumber.
• Finite verbs refer back to (or ‘agree with’) the subjectsubject of the sentence.
• E.g. Der Student schläft schläft (tense presentpresent; person third third; number singularsingular)
5.4 Non-finite verbs
• Non-finite verb Non-finite verb forms do not agree with the subject i.e. have no person, tense or number.
• The main non-finitenon-finite forms of a verb are:• InfinitiveInfinitive machenmachen (= to do) • Present participlePresent participle machendmachend (= doing)• Past participlePast participle gemachtgemacht (= done)• These non-finite forms are combined with
auxiliary verbsauxiliary verbs to form compound tenses and the passive voice.
5.5 German present tense
• There is no continuous presentno continuous present in German. Thus er schläft er schläft can either mean “he sleeps” or “he is sleeping” depending on context.
• The German present tense is often used where English would use the future tense: Wir finden Wir finden es nie es nie = “We will never find it”.
• This tense is used with seitseit to express a current action that began in the past.(Ich studierestudiere seit zwei Jahren)
5.6 Present tense endings
• Most German verbs are regularregular in their conjugation and may be called weak verbsweak verbs.
• They form the present tense by taking the stem of the infinitive e.g. machmach-en, -en, tutu-n -n and then adding the following endings:

5.20 German irregular verbs
• The present tense of the irregularirregular or strong strong German verbsGerman verbs must be learned carefully!
• Whilst they take the same endings as the regular verbs, many irregular verbs change change their stem voweltheir stem vowel in the second and third second and third person singularperson singular of the present tense:
• Most commonly: aa -ä-ä short -eshort -e -i-i auau -äu-äu
long -e long -e -ie-ie
5.21 Present: a/au irregular verbs• a a ää• fahren:fahren: ich fahre, du

5.27 Imperfect tense...?
• What students call the “imperfect endings” “imperfect endings” are in fact used for TWO different tenses.
• They can refer to the imperfect tense imperfect tense which expresses uncompleted action in the past.
• Er Er wartetewartete schon auf mich. schon auf mich. (= He was already waiting for me.)
• Das Publikum Das Publikum wurdewurde langsam ungeduldig. langsam ungeduldig. (= The crowd was slowly becoming impatient.)
5.28 …or the simple past?
• The same endings are also used by the simple simple past past or preterite ( preterite (das Präteritumdas Präteritum)).
• This tense is used to describe past events in written Germanwritten German and is similar to English:
• Sie Sie kamkam ins Zimmer und ins Zimmer und setzte sichsetzte sich. . (= She came into the room and sat down.)
• 1961 1961 bautebaute die DDR die Berliner Mauer. die DDR die Berliner Mauer. (= The GDR built the Berlin Wall in 1961.)
5.29 Imperfect/simple past endings
• RegularRegular / weak verbsweak verbs form the imperfect / preterite by constructing an imperfect stemimperfect stem:
• This is formed by taking the stem of the infinitive and adding -te -te :e.g. machmach-en -en machtete, , änderänder-n -n ändertete
• Then the following endings are added:
ichich ------ wirwir -n-n
dudu -st-st ihrihr -t-t
er/sieer/sie ------ siesie -n-n
5.30 Imperfect/preterite: holen

fetched
5.31 Verbs in -d/-t or -m/-n
• Verbs whose stem ends in -d-d or -t-t, or in -m-m or --nn after a consonant add -ete-ete to form the imperfect stem:
• -d-d ich redich redeteete, du reddu redetestetest, er reder redeteete• -t-t ich arbeitich arbeiteteete, du arbeitdu arbeitetestetest, er arbeiter arbeiteteete• consonant + -mconsonant + -m ich atmich atmeteete, du atmdu atmetestetest• consonant + -nconsonant + -n ich rechnich rechneteete, du rechndu rechnetestetest
5.32 Imperfect/preterite: warten

he/she/it waited
• PluralPlural• wir wartwir warteteneten:: we
waited• ihr wartihr wartetetetet:: you
waited (= inf.)• sie wartsie warteteneten:: they
waited
5.33 Imperfect/preterite: irregular• IrregularIrregular / strong verbsstrong verbs form the imperfect /
preterite by adding the same endingsthe same endings:• Their imperfect stem can be very different
however! Only a few strong verbs add -te -te and these change consonants and vowels: e.g. bringen en brachbrachtete, denken en dachdachtete
• Note in particular the verbs in -ennen-ennen : brennen en brannbranntete, , kennen en kannkanntete, , nennen en nannnanntete, , rennen en rannranntete
5.34 Imperfect/preterite: bringen
• SingularSingular• ich brachich brachtete:: I

• PluralPlural• wir kannwir kanntenten:: we
knew• ihr kannihr kanntettet:: you
knew (= informal)• sie kannsie kanntenten:: they
knew
5.36 Irregular imperfects/preterites• Most irregularirregular / strong verbsstrong verbs do not add -te -te to
the imperfect stem. These must be learned separately! Note the vowel changes:
• -ei -ei -ie/-i-ie/-i: bleiben en bliebblieb, beißen en bissbiss• -i -i -a-a : singen en sangsang, sinken en sanksank• -ie -ie -o-o : fliegen en flogflog, bieten en botbot• -e -e -a-a : helfen en halfhalf, essen en aßaß• -a -a -u-u : fahren en fuhrfuhr, waschen en wuschwusch• -a -a -ie-ie : fallen en fielfiel

5.39 Compound tenses
• A compound tensecompound tense is a verb with two parts:1) an auxiliary verb (das Hilfsverb)(das Hilfsverb):
habenhaben, seinsein, werdenwerden with finite verb endings 2) a non-finite verb (das Vollverb)(das Vollverb): infinitiveinfinitive, past participlepast participle
• As the auxiliary verb has finite verb endings, it must be in the presentpresent or imperfectimperfect tense.
• The past participle or infinitive comes at the end of the clause with normal word order.
5.40 The German future tense
• Thus the future tensefuture tense is comprised of:1) the present tense of werdenwerden
2) the infinitive of das Vollverbdas Vollverb • It is used much less often than in English and
is usually replaced by the present tensepresent tense.• The future is often used to avoid confusion:
Hat er gesagt, dass er sie Hat er gesagt, dass er sie besuchen wirdbesuchen wird??(i.e. “will visit” and not “is now visiting”)
5.41 Future tense: sagen
• SingularSingular• ich werdich werdee sagen: sagen: I
will say• du du wirstwirst sagen: sagen:
you will say• er/sie/es er/sie/es wirdwird sagen sagen
he/she/it will say
• PluralPlural• wir werdwir werdenen sagen : sagen :
we will say• ihr werdihr werdetet sagen: sagen:
you will say• sie werdsie werdenen sagen: sagen:
they will say
5.42 The past participle
• The other compound tensescompound tenses are formed with the past participle (das Partizip Perfekt)(das Partizip Perfekt).
• Regular verbs form the past participlepast participle by:1) taking the stem of the infinitive2) adding ge-ge- to the beginning of the stem3) adding -t-t to the end of the stem
• Thus: machen en gegemachtt, holen en gegeholtt, segeln n gegesegeltt, senden n gegesendetet, antworten en gegeantwortetet
5.43 Omission of ge- from participles• The prefix ge-ge- is omitted from the past
participle with verbs ending in -ieren-ieren:e.g. studieren ieren studiertstudiert, gratulieren ieren gratuliertgratuliert, kritisieren ieren kritisiertkritisiert
• Likewise -eien-eien: prophezeien eien prophezeitprophezeit• Also with verbs with inseparable prefixesinseparable prefixes:
bebezahlen en bebezahltt, er erregen en ererregtt, ententdecken en ententdecktt, ge genügen en gegenügtt, verversuchen en verversuchtt, zer zerstören en zerzerstörtt
5.44 Separable verbs
• ge-ge- is put between the prefix of a separable separable verbverb and the stem participle:zumachen machen zugegemacht, einkaufen kaufen eingegekauft, ausbreiten breiten ausgegebreitet
• BUT if the simple verb has no ge-ge- in the past participle, it is also lacking in corresponding separable verbsseparable verbs:
ausausprobieren en ausausprobiert t (= to try out) ananerkennen en ananerkannt t
5.45 The perfect tense
• The perfect tenseperfect tense is comprised of: 1) the present tense of habenhaben or seinsein
2) the past participle of the VollverbVollverb
• It is used in spoken German to relate the past (and in written German to indicate a past event that is relevant to the present).
• As a general rule: simple past / preteritesimple past / preterite = writtenwritten German
perfect tenseperfect tense = spokenspoken German
5.46 Perfect tense: sagen
• SingularSingular• ich habich habee gesagt: gesagt: I
have said• du hadu hastst gesagt: gesagt: you

5.49 The pluperfect tense
• The pluperfect tensepluperfect tense is comprised of:1) the imperfect tense of habenhaben or seinsein 2) the past participle of the VollverbVollverb
• It equates to the English pluperfect in that it expresses what the speaker “had done”“had done”:
• Das hattehatte ich längst vergessenvergessen. (= I had forgotten that a long time ago.)
• Nachdem ich das Haus verlassenverlassen hattehatte...(= After having left the house...)
5.50 Pluperfect Tense: holen

we had travelled• ihr ihr wartwart gereist: gereist: you
had travelled• sie sie warenwaren gereist: gereist:
they had travelled
5.52 Irregular past participles
• A few strong verbs form their past participlepast participle by adding -t-t. These are the same verbs that form the imperfect with -te-te:
• e.g. bringen en brachte te gegebrachtt
denken en dachte te gegedachtt
brennen en brannte te gegebranntt
kennen en kannte te gegekanntt
nennen en nannte te gegenanntt
rennen en rannte te gegeranntt
5.53 Irregular past participles
• Almost all other strong verbs form the past past participleparticiple in -en-en. There are some patterns, but verbs MUST be learned individually!
• -ei -ei -ie -ie -ie-ie: bleieiben blieieb geblgeblieiebenben• -ei -ei -i -i -i-i: beieißen biiss gebgebiissenssen• -e -e -a -a -o-o: heelfen haalf gehgehoolfenlfen• -e -e -a -a -e-e: geeben gaab geggegeebenben• -e -e -o -o -o-o: feechten foocht gefgefoochtenchten
5.54 Irregular past participles (2)
• Here are some more strong verbs patterns leading to past participlespast participles ending in -en-en.
• -i -i -a -a -u-u: siingen saang gesgesuungenngen• -i -i -a -a -o-o: gewiinnengewaanngewgewoonnennnen• -ie -ie -o -o -o-o: flieiegen floog geflgefloogengen• -a -a -u -u -a-a: faahren fuuhr gefgefaahrenhren• -a -a -ie -ie -a-a: faallen fieiel gefgefaallenllen
5.55 Present participles
• The present participle (das Partizip Präzens)(das Partizip Präzens) is formed for all German verbs by: 1) taking the infinitive of the verb 2) adding -d-d to the end of the stem
• e.g. machen en machendd, gehen en gehendd, studieren en studierendd
• Neither seinsein nor habenhaben have a present participle
5.56 Present participles (2)
• Present participles indicate actions taking place at the same time as the finite verb.
• They are almost exclusively used in modern German as adjectivesadjectives (with adj. endings!):
• e.g. die schreiendenen Vögel, das kochendee Wasser, ein wartendeses Auto
• Also as adjectival nounsadjectival nouns: die Sterbendee (the dying woman), die Streikendenen (strikers)
