• Georgia has 159 counties. The geographic center of the state is located in Twiggs County.

• Georgia has 5 physiographic regions. They are the Appalachian Plateau, Ridge & Valley, Blue Ridge, Piedmont, and the Coastal Plain.

• Georgia is the largest state east of the Mississippi River. There are 5 states that border Georgia. They are Florida, Alabama, Tenneesee, North Carolina, and South Carolina.

• Appalachian Plateau Region-smallest region, located in the northwestern corner of the state.

• It was referred to as the “TAG Corner” because it is the point at which Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia meet.

• The Appalachian Plateau is where you will find Lookout Mountain, Sand Mountain, Cloudland Canyon, and the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park.

• The Ridge and Valley Region– Lies between the Appalachian and the Blue

Ridge Mountains.– Best known for apple orchards and carpet

manufacturing. Dalton is known as the “carpet capital of the world.” Taylor Ridge and Pidgeon Mountain are found in the Ridge & Valley.

• The Blue Ridge Region– Contains the highest and largest group of

mountains. Northeast Georgia.– Brasstown Bald is the highest peak. 5000 ft.– Amicalola Falls and Tallulah Gorge are

located in the Blue Ridge.– Two popular cities Helen & Dahlonega

• The Piedmont Region– Best know for its Red Clay– 50 percent of the states population– Atlanta and Loganville are in the Piedmont– Stone Mountain is the world’s largest mass of

exposed granite.

• The Coastal Plain Region– Largest land region-very swampy– Crops include peanuts, pecans, corn– Home of the largest freshwater swamp in the

world. Okefenokee Swamp.– Major deep water ports include Savannah and

– Brunswick.

• The Fall Line– Separates the Piedmont and Coastal Plain– Many waterfalls-stopped ships– Macon, Columbus, and Augusta are 3 major

• Georgia has designated 7 natural wonders: They are the Okefenokee Swamp, Tallulah Gorge, Radium Springs, Warm Springs, Stone Mountain, Providence Canyon, and Amicalola Falls.
