healTh Care as a soCial GoodReligious Values and American Democracydavid M. craig

A great strength of Health Care as a Social Good is its careful, clear explication of fundamental ideas and values undergirding competing moral and political philosophies in the US, and also of religiously-based political activism and its effects (and potential effects) on social discourse regarding health care reform. Craigs own summary thesis, that health care works only if everyone is in it together, provides a base for his thoughtful critiques and defenses of the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare). This book is a valuable resource for all persons struggling to understand and respond to contemporary American battles over justice and health care access.

Jim tubbs, professor, Department of Religious Studies, University of Detroit Mercy

Health Care as a Social Good: Religious Values and the American Democracy argues that as escalating costs absorb a greater percentage of family income and government budgets, it is through the implementation of religious values that Americans can create a more community-based system. Transformation of the US health care system is a national priority and Americans need to work together now to bypass our differences. Craig insists that instilling core values will help us achieve this transformation, creating a new and better system that reflects the ideals of American democracy and the common good.

david M. cRaig is associate professor of religious studies and the Thomas H. Lake Scholar in Religion and Philanthropy at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). He is the author of John Ruskin and the Ethics of Consumption.

TransplanTaTion eThiCsSecond EditionRobert M. veatch and lainie F. Ross

    Praise for the first edition.

A comprehensive, knowledgeable and thought-ful treatise on the critical ethical issues those of us in the transplant field wrestle with each day. Nice job!

Jimmy a. light, Md, Director of Transplantation Services, Washington Hospital Center,

reviewing a previous edition or volume

Although the history of organ transplant has its roots in ancient Christian mythology, it is only in the past 50 years that body parts from a dead person have successfully been procured and transplanted into a living person. After fourteen years, the three main issues that Robert Veatch first outlined in his seminal study Transplantation Ethics, still remain: deciding when human beings are dead; deciding when it is ethical to procure organs; and deciding how to allocate organs, once procured.

However, much has changed. In this second edition of Transplantation Ethics, coauthored by Lainie Friedman Ross, transplant professionals and advocates will find a comprehensive update of this critical work on transplantation policies.

RobeRt M. veatch is Professor of Medical Ethics at the Kennedy Institute of Ethics, Georgetown University. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Washington Regional Transplant Community as well as the Ethics Committee and the Vascular Composite Allografts Committee of the United Network for Organ Sharing.

The afriCan renaissanCe and The afro-arab sprinGA Season of Rebirth?charles villa-vicencio, erik doxtader, and ebrahim Moosa, eds.

Foreword by former south african president thabo Mbeki

Anyone who wants to understand what is going on in Africa today needs to read this book.

desmond tutu, Archbishop Emeritus (Cape TownSouth Africa)

African Renaissance and the Afro-Arab Spring addresses the often unspoken connection between the powerful call for a political-cultural renaissance that emerged with the end of South African apartheid and the popular revolts of 2011 that dramatically remade the landscape in Egypt, Libya, and Tunisia. Looking between southern and northern Africa, the transcontinental line from Cape to Cairo that for so long supported colonialism, its chapters explore the deep roots of these two decisive events and demonstrate how they are linked by shared opposition to legacies of political, economic, and cultural subjugation. As they work from African, Islamic and western perspectives, the books contributors shed important light on a continents difficult history and undertake a critical conversation about whether and how the desire for radical change holds the possibility of a new beginning for Africa, a beginning that may well reshape the contours of global affairs.

chaRles villa-vicencio is a visiting professor in the Conflict Resolution Program at Georgetown University and senior research fellow at the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation in Cape Town.

reliGion and The sTruGGle for european unionConfessional Culture and the Limits of Integrationbrent F. nelsen and James l. guth

Religion and the Struggle for European Union is a major contribution to the literature on religion and politics in Europe. . . . authors display an impressive command of the relevant historical, cultural and political factors, and convincingly argue that Catholics tend to be more supportive of European integration than Protestants.

Paul christopher Manuel, Institute for Leadership Studies, Mount St. Marys University

In Religion and the Struggle for European Union, Brent F. Nelsen and James L. Guth delve into the powerful role of religion in shaping European attitudes on politics, political integration, and the national and continental identities of its leaders and citizens. Catholicism for centuries promoted the universality of the Church and the essential unity of Christendom. Protestantism, by contrast, esteemed particularity and feared Catholic dominance. Nelsen and Guth compare the Catholic view of Europe as a single cultural entity best governed as a unified polity against traditional Protestant estrangement from continental culture and its preference for pragmatic cooperation over the sacrifice of sovereignty. As the authors show, this deep cultural divide, rooted in the struggles of the Reformation, resists the ongoing secularization of the continent. Unless addressed, it threatens decades of hard-won gains in security and prosperity.

The fuTure of eThiCsSustainability, Social Justice, and Religious CreativityWillis Jenkins

Winner of the 2014 AAR Award for Excellence in Constructive-Reflective Studies

Rather than a book of despair, Jenkins argues for the possibility of religious ethics charting new strategies of moral agency by working within the traditions that form constantly shifting communities to meet the challenges of climate change and sustainability. Carefully argued, creative, and well-written, Jenkins challenges assumptions. This is a must read book.

emilie townes, Dean and Carpenter Distinguished Professor of Ethics and Society,

    Vanderbilt Divinity School

The Future of Ethics interprets the big questions of sustainability and social justice through the practical problems arising from humanitys increasing power over basic systems of life. What does climate change mean for our obligations to future generations? How can the sciences work with pluralist cultures in ways that will help societies learn from ecological change? By integrating environmental sciences and theological ethics into problem-based engagements with philosophy, economics, and other disciplines, Willis Jenkins illustrates the wide understanding and moral creativity needed to live well in the new conditions of human power. He shows the significance of religious thought to the development of interdisciplinary responses to sustainability issues and how this calls for a new style of religious ethics.

Willis Jenkins is associate professor of religious studies, University of Virginia. He is the author of Ecologies of Grace: Environmental Ethics and Christian Theology, which won the 2009 Templeton Prize for Theological Promise.

human diGniTy and The fuTure of Global insTiTuTionsMark P. lagon and anthony clark arend, editors

The concept of human dignity is powerful, but the international institutions and legal regimes charged with realizing it are not. Lagon and Arend have assembled a wealth of new strategies for strengthening these institutions to make human dignity a reality in the lives of more people.

elisa Massimino, President and CEO, Human Rights First

What role should human dignity play in guiding the mission of international institutions? Human dignity consists of the agency of individuals to apply their gifts to thrive, and requires social recognition of each persons inherent value and claim to equal access to opportunity. Contributors examine how traditional and emerging institutions are already advancing human dignity, and then identify strategies to make human dignity more central to the work of global institutions. Human Dignity and the Future of Global Institutions concludes with a final section that lays out a path for a cross-cultural dialogue on human dignity that could successfully achieve the transformation of global politics into service of the individual.

MaRk P. lagon is global politics and securi-ty chair, Master of Science in Foreign Service Program, Georgetown University; adjunct senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations; and former US ambassador at large to Combat Trafficking in Persons.

sex, violence, and JusticeContraception and the Catholic Churchaline h. kalbian

Aline Kalbian provides a fresh and provocative approach to a subject that will not go away: the Catholic Churchs opposition to contraception. Eschewing the tired battles between left and right over personal morality, Kalbian goes at the topic from a different direction. She makes a compelling case for the huge influence of social and political forces on what are supposedly objective and logical arguments. In reality, the contraception debates are about how to frame sex, gender, and violence. This book is a must read for anyone striving to understand how religious traditions adapt (or not) to changing cultural dynamics.

I highly recommend this book for upper undergraduate, seminary, and graduate level courses as well as parish and adult study groups. This text should be in any library that serves these populations.

Pakistan is a rare case where unresolved issues about relations of Islam to politics intersect with democratic development. Vying for Allahs Vote provides a valuable glimpse into how Islamic party politics in Pakistan has influenced the development of political platforms and how Islam and democracy are likely to impact one another.
