George has one son named “Bubba”. He had a daughter, Jenifer, but she passed
away when she was 13 years old due to a car accident.
He is married to Norma Strait and has been for over forty years.
George’s parents got divorced when he was in the third grade and he lived with his dad on a farm.
George started bull riding when he was little
with his older brother. He is a member of the PRCA (partners in team
roping competitions. Him and Bubba still ride bulls and have
competed as a team. George also ropes and rides horses.
George served in the military. While he was stationed in Hawaii, he
auditioned for an army sponsored band. When he was discharged from there, he
decided to keep going. He got a group together and formed a band.
“Unwound” was his first single. “Fool Hearted Memories” was his first number one hit in 1982. He had a total of 31 No. 1 hits by the mid 90’s. In the late 80’s and early 90’s, he had won CMA album of the year
and entertainer of the year twice. He started touring in the 1990’s and took Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, The
Dixie Chicks, Alan Jackson, and Kenny Chesney along with him who soon became rising stars.
He stopped writing and singing songs for a little bit, but his son has convinced him to keep going.
He is still writing songs and making No. 1 on the charts.
He has also acted in several movies. Also, he played the role of Dusty in Pure
Country. He was a small role in The Soldier in 1982. He had a couple little appearances in Grand
Champion.
He is considered to be the “King of
Country”
