Introduction

George Orwell, a novelist Avid follower of politics, voiced his dislike of totalitarianism

through his most famous works These two books are his main contribution to his esteemed

reputation as an exceptional writer.

Early Life

• Born on June 25th 1903, Eric Arthur Blair was the second child of Richard Blair and Ida Limonzin.

• They resided in Bengal India where his father was with the British Civil Service.

• He had two sisters Marjorie and Avril.

• At the age of one he and his mother moved to England

Education

• At the age of five, entered the Anglican parish school on the Henley-on-Thames for two years before going to St. Cyprian’s in Sussex.

• Corporal punishment was common that could be the possible reason Blair resented authority.

• With pressure to excel, he earned a scholarship to Eton College, which he attended from 1917-1921.

Career• Blair went to Burma to join the Indian Imperial

Police. He spent five years but resented the oppression of imperialism.

• He left and decided to become a writer, moving to Paris to try and write short stories, he destroyed them because no one would publish them.

• When Civil War broke out in Spain, he and his wife both wanted to fight for the government against the Nationalist uprising.

• He worked for the BBC in broadcasting to gain support for the Indians and East Asians.

• He became the literary editor for the left wing—The Tribune he then left them to be a war correspondent for The Observer.

Personal • In 1936 George married Eileen

O’Shaughnessy. They adopted a son in 1944-Richard Horatio.

• In 1937 they fought in the Spanish Civil war. George was shot in the throat by a “Fascist sniper”.

• After joining the workers party of Marxist Unification(POUM) they were sought by the communists and barely escaped with their lives.

• Eileen died on 29 March 1945 while undergoing surgery.

• In 1949 he was admitted to Cotswolds Sanitorium for tuberculosis, then he married Sonia Bronwell.

Later Life

• In 1944 he wrote his novel Animal Farm although publishers war would not publish it because of the anti-Stalinist allegory while the war was still going on, it was published after the war ended.

• Eric Arthur Blair died suddenly in London on 21 January 1950 at the age of 46 dying of the tuberculosis.

Conclusion • George Orwell’s life and works have been the source

of inspiration for many author’s works. Many of his works have been made into television shows and films.

• He also contributed many concepts, words, and phrases to our present day language—newspeak, four legs good, two legs bad, he who controls the past controls the future and War is peace.

• George Orwell is a master of wit and satire. He devoted his life to many causes but in the end he most wanted to make political writing and art.
